1. West Coast Imaging does a fantastic job. They can print any size you would like, you just may have a large margin on one side. Give them a call.
As for switching from film to digital, I find that I shoot more, experiment more, and actually play with more images on screen (since they don't have to be scanned). These things made the move from film to digital well worth the cost for me.
2. 1. I agree with others that you can check the histogram for exposure. When the sun is in the sky, I tend to use matrix metering with the sun just outside of the frame, then set the composition. This will get you fairly close.
2. Since many sunset shots in Hawaii could contain uneven horizons, multiple exposures joined later will do a better job than an ND. Also, good tip from Laurie Meehan-Elmer in that the show is definitely not over after the sun goes down. You can pull some beautiful colors out of the sky with longer exposures. Makaiwa Bay Sunset with Venus is a shot I took on the Big Island several minutes after the sun had set.
3. I think that if you do not stare directly at the sun you should be fine, but you should ask your doctor.
3. I have been to the Big Island several times, and have seen birds everywhere I looked. On the lanai in the morning you just need to sit for a few minutes and will be treated to an orchestra of birds. My parents say that Kauai is even more so. Having not looked for birds specifically I cannot advise you on specific locations, but you will not have to look hard.
For general tour guide advice I would highly recommend two books:
4. I had a free minute, so thought I would check out your site. When a new window opened (first argh) and then filled my 23 inch lcd (second argh), I closed the windows. The openeing shot looked nice, though. Opening a new window is bad design. Forcing a size for that new window is very bad design, unless it is a popup help window or something.
  5. I can tell you from experience with the 1280 that you will most likely not like the results of B&W prints using black ink only. I was noticing a slight color tone to some B&W's I was printing, so turned off color. The results were horrible. I looked around online at that time and found that the 1280 needs the colors to produce good shades. You should look at one of the newer printers that have two black inks, like the Epson 2200. Another option is to use monochrome inks, as mentioned here:

but I have not tried this myself.

My wife has a Minolta F100 point and shoot that has started losing its

settings whenever the batteries are replaced (which is quite often

with this camera). A call to Minolta confirmed that the problem is the

internal battery, the replacement of which would cost me $120 and must

be sent to them. Has anyone taken this camera apart? Could you provide

some guidance? Or has anyone seen instructions for replacing the

    internal battery?

    Thanks,

    Randy

  8. Actually, I am not entirely sure if their use would be corporate or retail, but I believe their

intent is retail. So, I am glad this distinction was brought up. Also, I have since been told

that multiple calendars would be made, each with a smaller run of about 40K. So it looks

like a fee around $5000 is about right.

Thanks for the input!

  9. I have been approached concerning the possibility of a company using my work alone to

make a wall calendar. Rights would be for the single year, calendar rights only, with a run

size of around 160K. Any suggestions on what to charge? I have searched around and on

this site and have seen links to FotoQuote and HindSight, but would love to know what

some of you have been paid for such a project. If the answer is that I should get one of

these pricing programs, I will certainly do so, but my reading has indicated that pricing

can vary wildly, so a survey of this community would be helpful.
10. I would love to see a nude filter installed on this site. With the constant nudes being posted and seen in Top Photos, I do not recommend this site to others. I would love to share and support this resource, and this one issue stops me. Actually, this one issue will have me looking at, and supporting, usefilm instead of photo.net. I really like photo.net, though, so would prefer to stay here with filters.

As for the arguments people are making about pre-viewing the site before showing it to a 7 year old, that is crazy. The only option is to not show it to her at all since nudes pop up often and are on dynamic pages.
