  1. Hi,

I recently bought a couple of elinchrom monolights and was thinking about using

my 380EX as a third light for studio settings or even using it as a main light

    for location work.

I don't know it an optical slave like this:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?

    O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=109466&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

Will work to trigger it or if the contacts on the bottom of the Canon

    Speedlites need something different.

    Thanks!

  2. Tudo bem Rubens?

Count another vote for the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 plus 50 f1.8 combo for the most bang for your Real.

How did you come by a 1D at a reasonable price in Brasil? I live in Mexico and fortunately we are very close to the border, I just had a friend bring me a set of lights that was 2X the price plus 15% VAT in the local market.

    Tudo bem!

  3. Hi Emily

For the same price no doubt go for the XTi, the XT should be about $150 less than the XTi.

I would probably get it with the kit lens and budget permitting I would get a 70-300 IS. That will give you a good range and some quality glass.

If you could do it, get the $79 EF50mm f/1.8, it is an excellent available light/portrait lens that will let you shoot pictures not doable with zooms.

    Hope this helps!

  4. Josh,

Start out at a photography school. They can probably point you towards the right equipment once they start knowing you better than a bunch of guys on an internet forum.

    As far as equipment goes, start with a Rebel XT, a 17-40 f/4, a 50 f/1.8 and if budget permits a 70-200 f/4 and a 430EX Flash.

    Good luck!

  5. Hi,

This is probably not much, but I got myself invited to the presentation of new Canon products in Mexico City on September 6th. The guy who invited me runs the Canon service center in Mexico City and has indicated that they get to see and learn about new models a lot earlier than anybody else.

He didn't give me much to go on, but he did say that there will be two new DSLR's presented on Photokina and he also indicated that they are not just incremental models like the 30D.

  6. I checked and found in a reference that Don Baccus used this combination, but

I'm not sure that he refers to the USM lens because of the date of his post.

I ordered the EF12II for my wide angle zoom and it will be delivered next week,

so I'm not asking whether I should buy it or not. I know it will also work

with my 100 f/2.8 USM Macro, but the question is whether it will allow me to

install my 1.4X Extender behind the EF12II and the 100 2.8 Macro.

Of course this will not be the combination of choice to achieve a 1.67:1 (or

5:3) macro that my numbers show it should give, but it should work in a pinch.

    Thanks!

  7. Amanda,

If you mean the 1Ds Mk2 then you're not comparing apples to apples, the full frame sensor will give you significantly better low noise performance and image quality. It's almost like comparing 35 mm to medium format. Plus your lenses work like they are supposed to, no crop factor and trying to find a good wide angle alternative.

If you mean the 1D Mk2N then I still believe Canon comes out ahead, less magnification with the 1.3 factor plus you get a faster frame rate.

  8. Nikon 14 mm f/2.8 at $1,230

    Nikon 18 mm f/2.9 at $1,050

Probably the 18 mm will give a look more similar to the 24 mm in full frame.

That's where the need for a full frame camera comes along, you either buy an expensive lens at the wide end to make up for the 1.5x crop factor or buy a full frame camera for less difference than it takes to buy a body and an additional lens.

  9. My vote goes to option 1)

    - You will get better quality images on the wide end.

    - You get a lens with a large aperture for low light shots.

    - You won't miss the mm's between 40 and 50 or between 50 and 70.

  10. Tom,

Sounds like a good option, however I would suggest that you look into buying the 500D (or 5T) in 77 mm size and use a step ring to use it on your lens, the filter size for the 70-200 f/4 is 67 mm, really odd. This means you won't be able to use them on many other lenses if you buy them this size.

Does anyone know if using a 77 mm adapter on a smaller diameter lens affects image quality? I'm thinking it could, but I don't think it would be noticealbe, right?

  11. Laura,

First, I hope Shun doesn't delete my post, he is in the habit of doing it very often (just kiddin Shun)

Now, I honestly suggest that you don't buy the Nikon 18-200 for architecture! For that amount you could almost stretch a little bit and get the excellent 14 mm f/2.8 (at $1,230 gray market) or even the 18 mm f/2.8 (at about $1,050) and get some really great shots, instead of mediocre pictures that you could probably get with a point-and-shoot.

Regarding the tripod head, you should probably get a proper pan-tilt head like the 3030. The 3265 is kinda odd, I've only tried it at a store, but even the guys there didn't have much good to say about it. However, even if the 3265 is great, I still think it's not the best option for architecturals.

I almost have to say that perspective control lenses are the best for architectural shots, but with digital conversion factors they're probably not wide enough and at least perspective can be corrected in photoshop (tilted plane of focus cannot, but that's another story).

  12. Sean,

Theoretically yes, you could use any EF-S on a full body with an extension tube. However, like it was very clearly expressed by Mark, you will loose infinity focus, rendering your ef-s lenses pretty useless in any situation other than macro.

  13. With the way the 18-200 megazoom is selling for Nikon I would put money in Canon coming up with a lens in that range pretty soon.

I know it doesn't usually make sense to wait for the best-to-come, but it's not like you're gonna be missing shots with your current arsenal! Why not wait until after september and then make your decision based on what becomes available then.
