  1. <p>I have a Canon SD880IS camera. I have been having problems with the battery life: it is very short. The battery that it comes with only takes around 20 photos. I bought a high capacity replacement battery online and it manages around 50 photos. I did the ver.reg check and it tells me that it has lens zoom error, the infamous E18, but the lens itself works. I have already updated the firmware. Please advise. Thanks.</p>
  2. Thanks for the tips. I will also look at some sample photos and see. I have a 20D, and f/2.8 zooms. I know 2.8 won't be enough. I might have to push ISO3200 and then reduce noise. If I were to rent, and this is what I can rent from, which one should I choose: 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 135/2.0? BTW, my photos are probably only used for website viewing. Thanks again.
  3. I'm asked to shoot a high school badminton tournament this saturday. What would

be the best way to do it? I assume it's going to be in a gym with multiple

games going on. Should I shoot from a higher ground if possible? Shoot through

the net? How do I shoot through the net without constantly focusing on the net?

Telephoto or Standard zoom? Thanks very much!

  4. Hey all, I'm still an amateur in terms of wedding photography, but I have a few

questions for the pros. I have 2 Canon 20Ds with standard and telephoto lens,

and flash on each. I do mostly photojournalistic style photos, so i have to run

around alot. I try to carry both cameras whenever i could, holding one in my

hands, with the other camera strapped to my shoulder. i have trouble switching

cameras quickly, they fling around when i put one on my shoulder while getting

the other one from my other shoulder. What's the best way to carry 2 cameras so

I can switch between them very quickly?

My second problem in shooting is that when people interact they tend to face

each other directly. It becomes hard for me to get more of their faces in the

photos. Some people move their heads alot when they talk, and I can lose them

quite easily. Any advice on this? Thanks very much!

  5. I have a Pantone huey colorimeter. I reinstalled windows recently and when I

tried to calibrate my monitor, the results were exactly the same as before. I

know what the calibrated version should look like. Is there a reason why it's

not calibrating (even though the software said it is)? I don't want to

reinstall windows again just to fix this (if it fixes it). Thanks

  6. I've been reading Master Lighting Guide, which is a really good book on all

kinds of lighting style such as broad, short, butterfly, side and loop

lighting. Since it's hard to find models, I'm thinking of getting a mannequin

to practice on. Has anyone practiced on a mannequin before? How is it? Where

can I get an accurate one? Thanks

  7. It looks like I'm going with Slideshow Pro to create my flash based web gallery

(I don't know anything about html and web hosting). Could someone please

recommend an affordable web hosting service that will support slideshow pro,

and maybe other software like Jalbum and Simpleviewer. I don't have many

requirements, maybe 2GB of web space and similar bandwidth a month. Most of all

it has to let me use my registered domain name and a similar email address.

I've been looking at Site5 and HostRocket, are those good and affordable? I

don't need the livebooks.com type. Thanks very much!

  8. I was using Alien Bee B800 in a friend's basement, which has a low ceiling and

tight spaces. The walls are white. I used a silver umbrella for the strobe. I

notice that the light effect in the pictures isn't like what I saw with the

modeling light. It seems that everything is light up. I'm assuming that even

with a low setting the light from the strobe seems to bounce around in the

basement too much, illuminating parts of the picture that I don't want. How do

I better control light spilling? Thanks.

  9. I'm still confused about the GN of studio strobe and the GN of hotshoe flash. I

have an Alien Bee B800 and a Canon 580EX. For the B800, It's got a GN of 110-

160 when used with a 48" umbrella (http://alienbees.com/specs.html). While the

Canon 580EX has a GN of 190 when at 105mm. The Canon flash has a zoom head,

B800 doesn't. I know I'm not having the Canon flash bounce light off the same

umbrella to compare GN, but how do I compare the power of these 2 flashes. How

much more powerful is the B800? Thanks!

  10. I've seen some weddings where the photographers have studio strobes on stands

with brollies set up at the front. What are they for really? Are they useful?

I'm thinking that if the bride and groom's face needs to be light up, you can

use hotshoe flash. If you use studio strobes and maintain a high shutter speed,

the background will be dark. If you drag the shutter to bring in background,

you won't need the studio strobes anyways. Can anyone please clear this up for

    me? Thanks for the advice!

  11. Recently I'm fortunate enough to have an interview opportunity at a wedding

studio who's looking for photographers for the summer. What should I expect in

this interview? What kind of questions will I be asked? They also want some

samples, which I'm assuming is a portfolio request. What samples or types of

samples should I use to build my portfolio? Anything else I should watch out

for? Thank you very much for the advice.
