  1. "I figured I'd hit some of the big museums, but if folks have suggestions for interesting things to see, I'd appreciate it. I won't have a car, so things near metro lines would be preferable."

It isn't clear but it sounds like this might be your first time in DC? Museums are great for sure, but there are other landmarks in and around that are must-sees if you haven't already. Like the White House, Capitol, Washington and Lincoln monuments, the Vietnam war memorial wall and Korean war memorial, all of which are within an easy walk of one another. A bit farther away there are the Jefferson memorial, and Arlington Cemetery (which includes JFK & RFK's gravesites and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier).

There's a "Hop On Hop Off" sightseeing bus service that makes a continuous loop of all those sights, plus Georgetown, where you buy a ticket that's good for the day (or perhaps longer ones)and can get off at any location and stay as long as you want and then just catch the next shuttle whenever you want.

  2. I've bought a few things from them (nothing Leica though)and all was well. I've looked through their website under "Leica" and found many references like "inop" or "slow speeds off" or "rangefinder dim", so obviously it's clear that they are definitely not just concerned with outward looks as a couple people speculated. Plus they have a guarantee so even if they miss something or it happens within 2 months, you're ok.

All my Leitz gear are post war. Never had any interest in buying anything that is associated with the war or the time before that.

Absurd comment to me. How is a Leica camera 'associated with the war' because it was made in Germany during the war?

Guess I should return all US manufactured items I bought that were made during the IRAQ war?"

I'm all for making sure future generations are taught the atrocities of the Holocaust, but boycotting WWII-era German cameras seems like an overly-symbolic gesture. If you're that outraged and your principles are that strong, it would stand to reason you'd at least boycott all German products made by companies that were in business during the war. But then people would have to really sacrifice, because they wouldn't get to parade their BMWs and Mercedes in front of their neighbors. Besides, there's a decent likelihood that if a high-ranking Nazi owned that camera, that he didn't survive the war. So I'm with Rich on that part, and I'd still have a respect for his reasoning, if it weren't for the last comment. I'm a liberal and not in favor of this administration's actions, but I try to think beforehand, to keep from just blurting out rhetoric that only undermines the credibility of the liberal stance.

  4. "To Michael, Darryl and Peter: I probably shot more film in my life than the three of you together"

Hence the reason you changed your first name to Photo, no doubt. And yet, the three of us are wondering why with all your shooting experience you still "Would like to see the difference in angle between the 50 and the 35." Even with my paltry little bit of shooting compared to you, I've got that one figured out without asking for examples from others.

  5. My 50mm Summicron f2 lens looks just like the one in the picture here. I noticed you made detailed test shots and was just wondering, what makes this your favorite if you consider the next model is better?

Good job, Trever, you got the 11817 Summicron--my favorite 50"

    "Rob F. Photo.net Hero Photo.net Patron, sep 09, 2005; 09:48 p.m.

Alan: right you are. The 11819 is the better lens in every example."

  6. Film will only be dead when you can't buy it anywhere for any price. Is that really as hard a concept to understand as it seems, from all these ridiculous threads? Does anyone know how few film lovers will it take, world-wide, to keep one little 5,000 square foot factory with 20 workers buzzing over in China, with one smart entrepreneur taking orders for film and processing chemicals on an e-commerce website and netting a few hundred grand a year for himself?
  7. What a horrible feeling it must have been to discover the robbery, especially if you live someplace that's been crime-free up till now. I just never leave anything of value in my car, period, but that doesn't mean someone can't break into my house. I'm thinking now that I've got Leicas and they're of great sentimental value besides monetary, of getting a fire-proof safe that's anchored in such a way it'd take a thief two hours to get it loose (we'd keep other valueables in it too not just the Leicas).
  8. Wow, I haven't been to show-n-tell since grade school. Sorry I have no way of displaying any pictures of mine but I'll try to describe them. There are 2 bodies, one's an M2 and the other is an M4. They're shiny black like my Minolta SRT-101 and likewise some of it is worn back and there's some gold color, probably brass, underneath showing through. There's a 21mm Super Angolon lens f3.4, a 28mm Elmarit lens f2.8, a 35mm Summicron lens f2, a 50mm Summicron lens f2, a 90mm Elmarit lens f2.8 and a 135mm Telephoto Elmarit lens f2.8 which has a closeup thing attached to it that fits over the camera viewfinder. All the lenses are black but not shiny like the camerasa themselves. The 90mm lens has a strip of leather wrapped around the end nearest the camera. There's also some kind of strange periscope-like attachment with a mirror in it.
  9. "As soon as the digital M arrives the used Leica market will be glutted with M6s and prices will decline."

My camera-store guy said he got a lot of M6's in trade when the M7 came out, and also (but less)for the MP. He said he doubts that most of the customers who bought those traded-in M6's off him will or could afford the digital body, at least not right off the bat at full MSRP. I asked my Grandfather (he's a retired obstetrician and not hurting for money) why he gave up his Leicas to me and bought a Canon 5D instead of waiting for the digital Leica, and he said he couldn't imagine the digital Leica being less than twice the price of the 5D, and he said the 5D is here now and if something goes wrong Canon will just swap him a replacement, whereas the Leica is still "a phantom" and if something went wrong he might have to wait months for Leica to fix it, and at his age "time's a-ticking". He feels that a lot of staunch Leica users are seniors like himself and may have the same priorities. As for me, maybe in 4-5 years I'll be able to afford a used digital Leica...if I start the tuna diet now :^)

  10. I was asking an older camera store owner why a couple of my Leica lenses I got from my Grandfather have removable flanges with threads underneath, and he explained that they were originally for threaded bodies, and how there's 1 millimeter difference which is why the adaptors can work and the lenses still focus all the way to infinity. He then showed me on his stock of late-model Leica lenses, how the screw holes on the rear phlanges(?)are all in the same place. He said there are lots of people machining adaptors for Ebay nowadays, and wondered why someone hadn't or couldn't machine a threaded rear phlange, 1mm thinner, that could replace the bayonet type on any modern M lens. He said they would still be usable on an M Leica with the adaptor and that people who like the threaded Leicas could use all the latest lenses on them. Sounded cool to me.
  11. Thanks for that Jeremy, we science geeks like to argue but we do try to check our facts before blurting out a statement. Interesting that the same guy who made the erroneous statement I contradicted also found your factual thread boring, hijacked it and turned it into a flame war (did this forum used to be un-moderated?). Wish I'd read it first, I would've just ignored the guy.
  12. "There have been reports of the plastic-tipped version breaking. Not so with the straight metal type!"

My M4 was purchased by my Grandfather sometime around 1969-70 and he used it fairly constantly up until this year, he toted it all around the world with him and shot many thousands of rolls of film. About how soon do you think I can expect the plastic-tipped lever to break?

  13. I'm originally from......everywhere (Army brat, we moved so often my mom said it didn't pay to completely unpack), now I live.......everywhere (environmental biologist, between academic research positions in search of a tenure track, doing on-site contract work for municipal gov'ts and private developers, my wife says it doesn't pay to completely unpack). Just got an M2 and M4 and 6 lenses (21mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, 135mm)from my Grandfather and have just discovered how shockingly much these are worth. I can't believe he just gave them to me, only because I've been admiring them ever since I was a kid.
  14. That looks like the one my Leicas came in, except it's black and I think probably bigger because both bodies and 4 lenses and some other sundries fit in it. I may be a newcomer to Leica but I've been a shooter for a long time and am resigned to the fact that a bag is always going to be at least a bit of a compromise. I'd recommend looking through Tamrac and Lowe-Pro catalogs or their websites. Between them they make a huge amount of bags that seem to differ in subtle ways from one another, maybe one will satistfy at least most of your requests. Some of the smaller bag makers have only a dozen or less models so probably you'll have less chance of hitting the jackpot.

Reread your own words, Darryl, and clue yourself in:"

Here's my clue: This is Craig's topic. If anyone was going to take offense at what I said, it should've been him, and he should've sent me an e-mail to that effect and we would've come to an understanding off-line. For that matter, if you or the Monkey had a beef with me, you could've e-mailed me off-line too. I wasn't trying to be offensive, it just bowled me over that someone would call two grand a "limited budget" with respect to just one or two lenses. I'm new to Leica, I really didn't realize how horrificly expensive the lenses could be.
