  1. Common sense says Paul's response is spot on.

Wading through five hundred photos and trying to choose is a lot of work, but a couple

thousand photos would be a nightmare for me.

Go through a couple thousand of your own personal photos and pick the fifty best ones...

you have two weeks... try it and report back. ;)

  2. "What about Adobe RGB 1998? that's the current color profile I've saved images in. Do I need

to change them all to sRGB?"

Yes. You need to CONVERT their profiles to sRGB, do not ASSIGN their profiles... the option is

there so just make sure you pick convert.

  3. John, You have all the equipment you need for capturing photos. Another lens won't make

    you any more creative.

FInd photos you like and study them to try and realize why you like them.

Set your camera on spot metering and set your white bal. on incandescent ( I use -2 as a

rule). The 50 mm 1.8 will yield great shots without flash. The 18-70 can too if there is

some light and you can drag the shutter (slower shutter speed... lets more light in), this is

not an uncommon technique especially for that type of band.

Buy some ear plugs. I'm not making a music statement, but you get blasted worse than

just about anyone and damage builds up and your hearing is damaged permanently.

  4. There are limitations on DVD's more so than CD's and I'm not technical enough to say why.

Also ordinary computer users know WAY less than you do and you need to remember that.

I still run across people that don't know about Cut & Paste and sit at a computer all day!

If I make a slideshow it goes on DVD and I test the master on two different DVD players.

One plays anything and the other is picky as it's an older DVD player.

So if I were you I'd deliver on a couple CD's.

  5. Being an opening it will be festive and people will be more relaxed so photos should be easy.

You don't need shots of them with their faces stuffed, just of them having fun and enjoying

    the place.

Do a few group photos first and then chit chat with the customers telling them how nice the

place is and that you were hired to photograph their wonderful guests... then you can go for

any close ups you need. Smile and say thank you.

--It is really too bad that some people prefer to rely on "photoshop skills" rather than

photographic skills to sell photos. (not referring to anyone in this thread - just in some

general trends that I have noticed in the market)---

Are they relying on it or just delivering what the client wants? Photoshop is one more step

today, but if that's what the market wants/expects so be it.

  7. With the flash off and ISO set at a comfortable level spot meter the incoming light and set

your camera manually, turn on your flash and bounce it off the white walls, ceiling etc.

I've done this without a tripod as slow as 1/4 second and it works fine. I brace myself well

    though.

Get up there before and do a test shot if possible.

  8. MYOB AccountEdge is far superior to QuickBooks on a Mac, at least it was last I checked a few

years ago. You can download a full working demo and try it out. I've used it for years and I'm

    very satisfied.

It also comes with numerous templates if you want something quick and easy to set up.

  9. You shouldn't go with here, but make sure the bride knows that if the videographer stands in

the isle in front of you during the ceremony she will have few photos to choose from.

    Get priority for shooting.

If you end up shooting with an aggressive video person you'll have headaches and your

    product will suffer.

  10. Buying RF music is the only way to go as the music industry once again doesn't *get it*.

They are such a convoluted nightmare they aren't even interested in dealing with this.

If Apple can make money on 99 cent downloads wouldn't you think they'd be happy with

$25 - $50 -$100 downloads? This is just another example of how they earn their

    reputation.

Search through the RF music and buy that and live with it. When asked to put their DVD to

their favorite music you just have to explain that it's illegal... no matter what others are

    telling you.

  11. Was this a $1,000 wedding or a $10,000 wedding?

Some people see photographs from high end weddings and for some reason kid

themselves into thinking theirs should be the same even though they ordered the budget

package that didn't include the two lighting people and the third photographer.

You already have plenty of good advice here, but my gut feeling is she's just trying to

    shake you down.

What you have to do is figure out how this may affect future business. I wouldn't worry

about the wedding coordinator as you wouldn't have lasted this long if they didn't have

    faith in you already.

    Good luck,

    Jim

  12. I use Apples iDVD and it's very easy to use. Small learning curve, but basically drag and

    drop.

I don't believe the image size is affect by the ratios. Save as full size jpegs. If you cropped

any photos make sure to up size them in Photoshop first to say 3000 pixels at the widest

    part of the photo.

    On a standard TV 5 x 4 fills the screen more than a 4 x 6.

Remember that if they are sharp 8 x 10's that they will be sharp no matter how large you

make them if the viewing distance ratio is proper.

    Good luck,

    Jim

  13. Depending on the connection a straightened paperclip is small enough to get in there and

give the locking pin a little *push* to *help* unlock it. All depends on the lens if there's a

    gap or

    not.

You may want to post what camera & lens for others.

    Don't force anything.

    Good luck,

    Jim

  14. < One girl's had more pronounced cheekbones then the others, just like her own face. We

had unknowingly each incorporated ourselves into some methodical process of copying a

man's head. One girl said something like, "But, I don't see how it's possible, I measured

EVERYTHING, and it was all REALLY that way">

It was real. If all five pieces had turned out the same you would no longer have been artists,

    but replicators.

  15. Sarah,

I ditched my desktop a couple years ago and for me it works out just fine. Same basic set-

    up that you are pondering.

Two caveats. Make sure you pick a laptop that can hold as much ram as possible

(requirements will only go up) and for security keep ALL your passwords in one file that

you can encrypt so when you leave the house and heaven forbid your laptop is stolen the

thief's will NOT have every one of your passwords and credit card info to feast on.

    Jim

  16. Marc,

I've never seen the advantage in selling limited editions.

Lets say a few turn out to be great sellers and you then realize that you and no one else

limited you to 250 sales for no viable reason... photos that could have been generating

income for the rest of your life.

If you feel a need to add a little something hand sign versos.

But if you are getting an ungodly amount for them and you have the ability to constantly

bring salable work of the same nature to the table then you would need to talk to someone

    who specializes in pricing art.

    Best of luck,

    James
