1.
New variable to add to equation. Originally the repair estimate came back 199.00 After several weeks was told additional parts and repair needed (no charge). Yesterday, after more than a month, repair shop said the D50 not worth repair. New estimate and additional 600. Given most of my shooting is family and High School sports, I am leaning towards the D3100. The D50 was used by other family members. Thinking about getting a D40 for wife and teenagers use. D3100 (locked up so noone else touches it) for me. Take the kit lens and put it on the D40. I generally use my 18-200 for almost all my sports shots.

  2.
Thanks for all the helpful responses.
1. I have sent the D50 for repair estimate.
2. All my lenses are DX (have their focus motors
3. I live in Atlanta, GA and have bought equipment from KEH before so if the estimate comes back too high, I go on line, find a replacement, swing by and pick it up. (Probably D5000 or D3100)Again, thaks for all the responses.

  3.
Recently my D-50 stopped working. I try to take a picture and the card image is black. Took to camera store and the diagnosis (without looking at the camera) was the image chip had gone bad. Estimate 250 to repair. Recommend options, do I find a Nikon authorized dealer to repair or bite the bullet and purchase the D-3000 or the newer D-3100? I have all Nikor lenses and want to stay with Nikon. Just casual family and High School sports photographer.

  4.
Thanks to all who gave advice. Purchased the 18-200 and shot 100+ images at first game. Did fine. I realize it is early in season so 6PM game still has decent light. Very surprised how well they turned out. As it gets later in season with it getting dark by game time, I will see how well the county provided lights work.

  5.
Thanks guys for all the good advice. This is a brand new HS and I have clearance to be on the field. Now to the sites you mentioned to find a 2.8. More expensive initial outlay, but seems necessary.

  6.
Thanks for the help. I will be on the sidelines. I have a Nikon D50. The pictures are personal. Obviiously I will make them available to the other parents, but this is not a business. I will check Frank's suggested 80-200 lens, see if I can find one used.

  7.
Is 200mm long enough for football? I am on a limited budget and wavering between the 18-200 (original version) and the 70-300. I know the 18-200 is more versatile, but wonder if I need the 300's extra reach. Please note I am asking a sincere question. Don't need the pros and or elites reply saying spend the $1,000.00 and get faster lens. This is a hobby to shoot my son. Thanks in advance for any help.

  8.
A. Your contract iswith the bride. Nothing to suggest the groom speaks for the bride.
B. contract is straight forward. The purpose of a deposit is to obligate both parties.Want to guess their reaction if you cancelled on short notice?

I would respond that the deposit will not be returned, but you do appreciate the courtesy of the early notice that you will not be needed.

  9. For the price you can't beat it. I have been using this lens on my D-50 for a year. Yes I would like a little wider angle, but it is well worth the price. I'm eventually upgrading to the 18-200VR but for now... By the way, I am not a professional photographer so weigh my opinion accordingly. Just a Dad who photos kids in sports, violin recitals, family get togethers, vacations, etc.
  10. After reading endless reviews, finally pulled the trigger and

purchased the D-50. To support Photonet I bought from one of the

retailers that supports Photonet. Wolf Camera (wholly owned

subsidiary of Ritz) had same price for the body only as for body with

the 28-80 f/3.5-5.6G Nikkor lens. Not my first choice for lens, but

for "free" it'll do until I get advice on next lens. From reviews it

seems I need a prime lens. To keep in the under $200.00 price range

I'm considering the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. I mainly photograph my son

playing sports, daughter playing violin and a lot of family

pictures. Advice from some pros who know more than I. I think the

18-200 is far in the future. Thanks in advance.
