  1. There is NO WAY anyone is seeing my bad pictures or unedited ones. It's digital time, press that button as often as you want, they will never know. Only you know the truth about how many bad pictures you have, don't advertise it!

Anyway, about the camera you are looking at, that I have sitting here. My beloved camera. Would I get it again? Probably not. I haven't joined the Canon bandwagon as of yet, but well, the day may come or not....anyway, I bought it, thinking like you did, that yes, there are two lens, and a dust-reduction system (which is good!), but the new Canon has it too. I figured the lens would be more than good enough for what I wanted, and rumor has it for kit lens they are very good, but well, three months after buying the camera, I spent $409 for a new lens this morning.....it's all down hill from here...oh well.....but really, if money is a issue for you, I would go with either this kit, or a used camera with some nice lenses with it. (selling my P&S that I bought about the same time so I can afford the lens I just bought :)

  2. Hi,

I had NYIP recommended to me by two graduates that I took a course from at ed2go on the internet. Both had graduated recently, and thought it was the best thing in the world.

Last December, because I didn't have a SLR, be it digital or film, I signed up for their digital course. The digital course is ok, but more for people that want to REALLY get into PhotoShop and more of a commercial art thing. I think it would be a great course to do AFTER the professional course. My longing was to do the professional course, but somewhere along the line I thought it had to be film, and not digital. I would look at the catalog, and think, oh, I wish I could take that course. About four weeks ago, I was listening to one of their 'podcasts' on their website, and realized I could do the professional course with a digital SLR (ok, I'm a bit slow :) I was on the phone with them a few minutes later. They switched me, and I am about to send in my first unit. Would I recommend them so far? YES!!!! I have ALL the materials, and all I can say is, if I learn anything close to what I have learned in the first three lessons (there are about 30), I am going to be some photographer when I am done. I have learned so much, and my love for photography has greatly grown in the last month. On the other hand, I look at other people's pictures, and think, oh, you REALLY should take that course :)

For the price (I know if you get their mailings, you can get it down to about $650, otherwise I think $850?), but think about how much a regular college course is at a school. This is a GOOD bargain, and enough subjects to cover that no matter what your level is, there must be things you could learn. Some people say the material is a bit old. Here's my opinion on that. First of all the basics (f-stops, etc. etc.) have not changed. A little going back in time will not hurt you at all because most new people to photography don't know this stuff. They HAVE reprinted everything this year, but some of the photos are still old. Guess that means they are still great photos! They have also included three booklets and CD's to go with them, that bring you up-to-date on what is going on in the digital world. The cassette tapes have been re-done recently. The old video tapes are now all on DVD.

I have had my phone calls and emails returned quickly, even though I do hear it is a bit slow to get back the feedback from your pictures. That's ok, I have enough reading, etc. to do that doesn't matter me.

So...would I recommend them? YES! (and like I said, I am going on the recommendation of two people that just finished the course).

  3. I have taken more than once (once for each camera), the online class at ed2go, Secrets of Photography. The instructor and TA are VERY knowledgable with SLR's. I had the same problem. I went from P&S to an SLR, and yes, after this class I know how (and understand) all the manual stuff. Here is one of the cheaper schools offering it (it's online, but you register through any community school, but the prices are different). At this school it's $65. As you can see by the link there is a class starting Wednesday. The discussion is just wonderful, and you can ask anything you want. http://www.ed2go.com/cgi-bin/oic3/newofferings.cgi?name=kern&dept=DP&path=

  4. Have you thought about doing something cheaper, and doing New York Institute of Photography course? That way you wouldn't have to dedicate your stuff totally to school, and you it won't cost a mint. I was referred by two people that took the course, and I have just started it not too long ago. They also do alot with setting up a business and selling your photography.

My personal thought if I am looking for a photographer, I could care less if you have a degree on your wall, I care about your photography. On the other hand, if you are a doctor.....I care that you have a degree! :)

I already have some jobs without ever trying to market my photography, but I make sure that everybody I know sees my pictures.

I have heard various things about community college courses, most of it not good unfortunately. Usually they are very basic courses, and since you are already in photography, you could probably teach the class.

  5. Hi,

I haven't been in photography very long, but have taken a few classes, and

well, things have improved :) I take dog/puppy pics for a lady that owns a

small dog rescue (LLC, not non-profit). I have had some people interested in

buying puppy/dog pics from me. So...obviously the questions are.....

    1. can I sell pictures (probably on my own website) of animals that are in

rescue....a: if they were used on her website.......b: if I took several pics

of one dog (which I do, of course), what about the ones that I don't actually

    use on her website......

    2. one thought was to price these a bit higher, and do a part donation to her

    rescue......

    3. so....who owns the pics?? me or her? I have been doing volunteer work

for her for a few years, but now feel it's time to start selling stuff--or

should I just stick with all my 'other' pictures?

    Thanks for any suggestions.......

  6. I know this sounds stupid, but probably a year ago a lady said, oh I took

10,000 pictures with my Canon (I THINK that was about the number), and it just

died one day. I thought, well yeah, I would think it did!

Never did I imagine that I would be taking 6700 pictures so far with my Sony.

So, what is the average number of pictures a camera takes before it says,

please bury me, I can't do this anymore?

  7. I am presently using a Sony DSC-H1 digital. I feel I am ready to move up to a

SLR. I have taken several online classes etc., and really enjoy photography.

I have read, and read, and read, and it seems the Canon always wins out, but

not sure why. I am not really a Canon fan, but well, if it is the best

camera.......my camera before this was an Olympus, and I LOVED it, especially

the color balance. I like that the Olympus has the sensor cleaning, and two

lens, but if Canon is better, well.......or is there a third choice......

here is what it is used for:

    1. puppies and dogs that can't sit still (I take pics for a dog rescue).

    2. zoo animals

    3. flowers and other closeups (not necessarily macros)

    4. casual people pics (not formal)

    5. everything else

  8. I took a class from ed2go, and the instructor, her Mom, and her teaching assistant had all completed it. They thought it was great, and is probably about the best bargain for your money. I am just getting into their digital course and there is ALOT of material. My only suggestion if you do it, is call them two or three weeks before you finish a unit to arrange your next shipment. They are extremely slow with their shipments.
