  1. Here in Canada knows really to get cold. I used my R8 with lithium on such cold that nothing works (minolta spot meter and flashmeter V, Gossen luna pro S), me included. Lost voice, hard to walk, fingers like not mine. Terrible, but R8 work. I guess -35C if not worst (no wind chill). Just recently Nikon F6 at -25..-30 with lithium no problem. Camera interior, where batteries are probably was not that bad, but not and far. It was really limit for battery itself. I do not know how fast MP compartment for battery can get enviro. temp but on R8 and Nikon F6 that problem is relly with good solution. They both was around 4 hours exposed to that low temp.

I just saw you inserted some of your photographs here in PN. I think they was not there by my last try to see your work. I am impressed with your conrtibution to photography, but all said above is valid except --where are your photographs--. I am sure you have and better images but I will take more time for your picts, and live some my view on them.

    Have a nice view finder.

  3. It is true, and always was, that there is interaction between art and society surrounding the same. As one progressed and second progressed too, but what is important is that they go into the same direction. If society where Rembrant lived was not reach as it were I guess I will never know anything about him. You made a nice analyze through very logical and acceptable way. I saw some points and accept it just as this is only internet not a test.

indication of what the populace is willing to accept.

I think that communications speed and -reach to- distance and $$$ power of corporations today directs mind and way of thinking of that populace, or at least there is a hard push of try. It is some artificial movement of society and at this point artist are in big trouble for it cannot follow the society. What is left to artist is to master art of surviving: to find source of living out of art, in many cases, while still returning to art, temporarily. This is a case in USA but majority of the normal World do not work in that principle, even some imitations can be seen but more like exploration than target of the society.

with introduction of computer into art world.

Computer and chips are not replacement for analog. They are two very different worlds. Digital technology is introduced on commercial purpose. Using digital technology many problems are solved faster and in much more efficient way. This is to thanks that it works in the way: find solution at the point A, make empty space without solution, find solution at the point C, empty space, . Show the solutions at point A B C... What is in between A and B is not detected by humans resolution. The base of use is that human cannot distinguish, without aids, small enough emptiness. Digital system is discrete and far from the perfection. At the very best efficiency of digital system is 0.5, while analog at its the best is 1.0 (or 100 percent). Note that this eff. Is not the same as efficiency above where I deals with time to reach solution. Art cannot deal with a such system. It can be art just in the world of robots. Digital system has its very limitations that will for ever keep it separate from art. Also digital system is alive just because human is still not smart enough to use at the same speed analog system. If one day speed and cost of analog system becomes the same as digital (or even close to it), it is definite end of digital world. It is also, like a role, that photographers knows little about digital technology. Usually what they know is what they see in advertising catalog from Canon or Nikon or TV. If you push someone to learn he always answer life is too short

The best work of the best photographers is not their commercial work, but work done for themself personally.

I'm not addressing any claims of heirarchy. But i am suggesting that claims like "all photography lies, so there's no such thing as purity" might be every bit as naiive as believing that photography always tells the truth."

Manipulating photographs is manipulating with photographs, it is altering the true for personal gain. When photograph is presented no one stick a label on it -this is a lie- because they expect that people see it as photograph. Can anyone just imagine how many copies will sell National Geographic with a label on front page -images are manipulated-. That kind of people that manipulate and use tricks do not have respect for things in front of their camera nor for intelligence public. I am still very sure they do and shop lifting for there is no difference. I just call it missed media. What I really would like is to get all of those consistent manipulators into one camp and analyze their structure. It really could say a lot.

  5. Manipulation as lie or stealling in imaging is immune to police (or law) action, unlike in many other living activities. I think it is used as a fortune and opportunity for imagers to develop their own character, repeating the actions, and the same make me to think that all of that creatures are of low inteligence and character, even they call such activities artistical vision and freedom or democracy. This is sharp but their work is much worst and do not deserve better. I just never would like such a person behind my back. Well if I tell them they are not right, let see what a reaction is.
  6. John Mackay

'I see photographers who are quite prepared to accept manipulation of landscape photos as being acceptable?it makes no difference.'

John when you present yourself as a person (or how YOU say photographer) that make no difference between someone that says true and someone that says lie, please get some confidence in yourself and do not talk as WE or US.

It is up to you to like and to say what ever you want, just, again, do not stick your character onto under.

  7. Brian

''I manipulate all of my images. I have no problem with that.

However, many of my landscape pictures are of named places, and if I change them such that they are unrecognisable to another person who has visited that scene (e.g. by converting to a mirror image), what have we got?

I suppose the analogy to portraiture would be if you manipulated and distorted the portrait so that the sitter no longer recognised himself in the picture, could you call it a portrait?''

Brian I think that when you see something you see oportunity for image not a reason for photograph. So I think you should remove names from that named landscapes and my answer to you is manipulate and it is very good think you can make for photography. And honestly I think that photographer made a fun of you.

    Have a nice day

  8. To decide which med. Form. to get I did just anything except diferential equations of third order. And I ended up with mamiya RZ67. When you crop 6x6 to get 'normal' mamiya RZ is nearly twice as big as hassy or rolley. Add that mamiya lenses 4.5/50 (apo quality for second spectrum order), macro 140 (apo quality too), and so on. Now add that it is indestructible and guess what. To make the camera out of work one really need huge brick to struck against the camera. And the bach is going on Linhof 679. What else one even and can imagine for MF camera. All that electronic I cannot see usefull for big and slow camera as MF. If one need fast reaction that comes with electronic I think that Leica R with low speed film and high speed lens will be better choice than any MF.
  9. 'The good news is that digital photography is accepted as photography by a) museums, b) artists, c) galleries, d) critics, e) photographers. It's only a handful of people here on photo.net that don't accept it.'

Uh I did not know that we today have so many artists. Thank you Jeff. How just advanced we are. Aaaaah that museums use digital, for what reason. I think your reason is the same. How come you forgot science.

  10. Robert X

    1. 'To argue, as you continue to do, that people using digital cameras are not doing photography, to me seems like straight out of a conversation from Alice in Wonderland.'

    2. 'Many artists use traditional methods, and many use cutting edge.'

    -----

    This is answer to you:

    1. To argue, as you continue to do, that people using digital cameras are doing photography, to me seems like straight out of a conversation from Alice in Wonderland.

    2. What is traditional and what is cutting edge, and why you think that way, and what at all it does with photography.

So make your own definition or definition you learned from other responsible for the same to avoid this funny kind of talking as above. That do not gets us anywhere. I can change my mind if you show me that I am not right. But please do not use computers, streetcars, Alice,... Use photography. Make that freaken definition away form I think you wrong, I think it is not correct,....

  11. Jeff,

'If we fix photography in a given time'

Can you make definition what span of time we need after 'a given time' that we have to unfix photography definition.

In etimology dict word 'four' after a given time means six. You are making up definitions without any foundation. It is rare case that word change its meaning. It is more common that word expands its meaning. And you figure out that NOW is time to change or expand meaning of word photography, giving meaning to it that fits your need. At least good try. Well, we are advancing, it is progress,...

I recomend you 'the concise oxford dictionary of english etymology' where you will find word 'photograph'. Read it and come back, or give them a call with your proposal. But how about German etymology dict.

Also photography is not only english word (e.g. fotografie), and to change its meaning in etymology dictionary the change you talk about have to be accepted everywhere. And please stay with photography, away from that stupid comparisons.

And about your example with computer. What that is doing with photography. Or you use it push your main on higher energy level, before you start with photography.

If you fill qualified, make you definition what photography is, no one will crucify you if wrong.

  12. Maris

    congrat...

It is one more definition from historical stand point. I would like to see some more valid qualities of photography. There are a lot more.

Today photography is free of many applications it filled in past, e.g. advertising, fashion, wedding,... and -nearly- all of other profesional practicing of photography in past. The guys that was easy to manipulate with cleared photography from stuff hardly belonged to photography. What remains is what always belonged to it: artwork and some kinds of personal (amateur) photography. Very hapy time for photography, thanks to God or Nikon and Nokia. He he he... Have a nice day.

  13. For three years I studed what is photography and how it works, and not enough.

By the most simple definition fundamental qualities of photography is, in short, that it is drawing produced using part of electromagnetic radiation called light, with both of its dual nature, corpuscular and wave nature. E.g. corpuscule defines exposure time and wave defines colors. (Away for the matter, corpuscular nature of light is also used in making light meters).

Painting is slow, difficult, rare, intended for important stuff (e.g. for rich and churchs), always in need for special knowledge and skill, while photography is oposite at all.

Going further it is media with 5 qualities: truthfulness, extreme exactness, blur (means appox. bokeh or out of focus), grain, tone fidelity no other media can even and imagine.

When comes to movie, video,... photography is static picture.

There are and hundreds more academic definitions (e.g. through sensitometry, history, perspective,...) that devide photography from any other media, but above are required and enough accurate for internet and in very clear way separate photography from any other media. If your image missing any of above qualities (including and all not mentioned here) you are out of photography. As my experince, many try to remove some parts of definition to expand photography to some other media. He he he he...

'I find myself with people photography I have to get the shot and get it now. A second or two can loose the expression of the subject. So I snap it. If the photo has potential I then crop it remove telephone poles or wires, sharpen, lighten and fix what I don't like.

Is it faked, absolutely. Is it what my client wants? Yup!'

If you say to your client this is not photograph will they still buy it. YES. They do not care it is a photograph ot a poster, or however you call it. Even they never ask for how you call it. They want an image on paper they can use to make money. You too, and it is not 'a must' photograph.

  15. Durst

I get your point. But there are problems out there to accept your point. People that use digital stuff just cannot acept you. If they accept it they are no more photographers, so what they are, and how about their investment. They cannot previsualize the scene so shoot and import into PS and change it there to what they like. They are nearly 100% not educated photographers it is easy to manipulate them by corporations and advertising. Photographs is sold in past and today too. Doing the same they think it is enough to make some image on paper that do not looks like painting, sell it and it is photography. They will never ever got through what is photography actualy, and it is good for photography. Rather they will investigate thousands definitions for photography, each in accordance with their need to be photographers, like yes maaan it is photography, what you mean, do you still use dail phone, it is technology advancement,... So no wonder for so much postmodern posters above. Photography do not need to worry about future of photography because on Nokia advertisement and that self called 'photogs'.

  16. Because it very good maaaan. It is made of good optical glass, good and cheap coating, expencive materials for the lens body, very tight manufacturing tolerances, even made in China did not change its price, ....

Do still think it is cheap. How about those with $500 life earning.

  17. To get denzitometer can lead to over technical stage, and just some

in USA can afford good one (it is over $1000). So how you use the

zone system without knowing the film speed. Do you fell a big hole in

zone system, for no one ever explained some practical way to get film

speed. I also consider that mix of darkroom in finding the same very

impracticle and not reliable. What is your secret way to accurate

film speed. Well I hope it is not a secret.
