1.
Go with the Panasonic GF-1. This is the future, a lot more camera in a small package. The 20mm 1.7 is a fantastic lens as well as the zooms, with more great lenses on the way. The D lux 4 is an overpriced Panasonic with a Leica Red dot. I almost bought the D lux 4 myself but a little research changed my mind.

  2.
Ralph, I own an MP and lenses which I love. I had an M6 before that. I just think their digital offerings especially the X1 is to little to late. I don't see any way it can survive. And.. there are people that would defend the Red dot no matter what Leica put it on and thats what bothers me the most. If this camera said anything but Leica on it there's no doubt in my mind that it would be slammed for being hopelessly behind in just about every way. Maybe that's why the defenders love it???

  3.
The review also say: "Once you start using the camera (X1) the short comings become clear." In conclusion is listed 8 Pros and 13 negatives. Read the whole review. It's a large sensor P&S with a slow lens offering simple manual controls. At $2,000.00, it's way over priced and outdated before it hits the store. It offers nothing really new, just repackaged. The only reason that I can see to buy this camera is if you really can't be seen with anything that doesn't either say Leica or have the Red dot on it.

  4.
I don't see how the X1 can survive. A large sensor ,fixed ,slow lens,P&S with Leica Red dot. What are these people at Leica thinking? $2000.00 buys a lot of digital camera today and this is light years away from what Leica needs to survive. The L should stand for loser on this one.

  5.
Yea, they're really on the up swing. They're knocking themselves right out of the ball park. This statement has to come from someone who doesn't have to concern themselves with real world financial realities. Seems to me that Leica has hired some of the Wall Street derivatives traders to run their financial department.

  6. My advise would be an M6 and 50mmm Summicron. as a great starter kit. if you find that the rangefinder experience isn't to your liking you can always sell it and recoup all or most of the outlay. I've had very good experience buying on Ebay. Don't you just love the sanctimonious prigs that tell you if you don't know what you want you don't need it and that stupid Rolls Royce quote about the price and the one who tells you that your not ready to invest in Leica. Is that your personal accountant? He seems to know your financials so well.
  7. Thanks to all for the advise. I am attracted to the Sl for the build quality and to the R 6.2 for the small size and would eventually like to own both when funds allow. I was just thinking that the R4 would get me in allowing more money for lenses. To Frank: while this is a rangefinder forum, I know a lot of members own both systems and I've seen responses to similar questions. Sorry if the question offends or rubs you the wrong way but I know I will get honest and valuable advise from knowledgeable users even if it isn't specifically a rangefinder question..
  8. I shoot with a .85 MP with a 50mm Summicron and 90mm Elmarit. I would like to

use some longer lenses and would like to know if the Leica R4 would be a good

usable and reliable body? Eventually I would like an R 6.2 but the prices are

really high. It looks like an R4 body could be bought for just a couple

    hunderd dollars.

  9. Cameras are for making photographs with....... Ellis you have a flare for the obvious. I don't think what Arthur is asking for is unreasonable. Leica offers their line of binoculars that have the normal painted and covered lens barrels and the( armored) or rubber coated lens barrels, and Ellis binoculars are for looking at distant objects through.:-). Might be a good idea if someone made something like this for when you had your Leica on a hike or out taking landscape photo's. It's not as ridiculous an idea as some would have us believe. As a matter of fact it's a pretty good idea.
