1.
John,

One of the reasons I see most people having issues when making the switch from PC to Mac is because they are use to the way a PC works. Its hard to let go to that thinking. If they both worked exactly the same way then there would hardly be a point to having 2 different platforms. Try to forget the PC and your Mac experience will improve.

You have not mentioned what software you are using to import your photos. Or are you just dragging from your camera/card reader on to your HDD? Is that how you imported your old PC files to your Mac?

I prefer using Lightroom to do the import. It allows me to create and name a folder to import the photos and then imports them into a dated file. Since I have several cameras I start with a folder based on the camera model, then a folder for location, then the date. I leave each photo file named as the camera named it (ex D300/eastern state penitentiary/2010/2010-08-25/DSC_0001.NEF).

This ensures me that all of my photos are easy to find.

As Roger stated above, dont overlook the R2880. Its about half the price of the 3880 and uses the same ink. It also prints 13x19 and can except rolls. The main difference is the ink cartridges are much smaller(and cheaper). Ideal if you print infrequently. The 3880 is actually cheaper on ink since you are buying large cartridges, but at around $50 a piece that can be bothersome for many. The 2880 cartridges are around $100 for all 8.

 3.
I would say its well made in the fact that the plastic that is used is not cheap plastic. For the most part its made of plastic as I would say of almost any other printer on the market except for the high end large format printers. It does have a metal guide bar that the print head guides on, but the gears are plastic.

It is quite heavy for its size. It does feel very solid, and it operates very quietly when printing. I would have to say its one of the top consumer grade printers on the market.

By the way I also have a 4880 which is also mostly plastic. It may have an internal chassis thats metal but Im not sure. It is about 6 times the size of the 2880 and weighs over 80 lbs. It all comes with a price.

 4.
One of my favorite areas to explore that is fairly safe is the Pocono region of Pennsylvania. The anthracite coal areas have lots of small towns that are rotting away. There are 2 abandoned coal breakers with plenty to explore.

And dont forget about Eastern State Penitentiary in Philly. Its open to the public and is a photographers dream. It is a controlled ruin dating back to the 1830's. And is so cool being right in philly. It looks like an old castle in the middle of a modern neighborhood.

There is also Pennhurst Hospital out side of philly. Its been closed for 20 years. Very creepy.

 5.
I wouldnt say either. However, I would say that I have gained a ton of knowledge that would have been much harder to come by. I use this knowledge every time I go out with my camera. I use it every time I try to do some editing. And I use it every time I try to make a print. Without this site and others like it I would be way behind of where I am right now.

I do feel that I am being challenged by members of these forums to become a better photographer. When I see photos posted by others I become inspired. I dont wont to copy what they did, but they give me ideas and inspiration. Im not sure if I would have stayed with photography if it werent for these forums.

 6.
You have to figure Nikon is about ready to do something. Its been 3 years since the D300 was released(I really dont consider the D300s as a new model), 2 years for the D700, and 2 years for the D90. I would say they are primed to offer 3 new models.

Just my opinion,

 7.
Have you looked into the replacement cost of your 300mm f/2.8 lens hood? Its $350, and the the one for the 600mm f/4 is around $600. And these are simple tube shaped designs. Imagine the cost of making a body out of carbon fiber. Im sure they can do it but dont be surprised when the camera is $10K.

Everything has a trade off. Inexpensive, durable, light...Pick 2

 8.
Frank,

I'm very curious to what your problem was with the ipad and the camera connection kit?

I have been able to attach the kit to the ipad, whether it be the USB piece and a CF reader or the SD piece, then view my photos and download the keepers. I can then email the photo to whoever.

Is there something you are trying to do that it just simply wont? Or does it just not do what Im doing?

Thanks,
Kevin

 9.
Hey Shun,

Thanks for the tip about B&H expansion, I havent been in the store in a few years myself. But since Im getting ready to leave for the city in about 20 minutes, I'm definitely putting a stop at the store on my to do list for today.

 10.
Dugave,

You are correct about the sales tax. NYC is something like 8.75%. Typically if you buy from another state you can avoid the sales tax, however, if that company ships the item from the state your in you may still have to pay the tax. I found this to be true with Dell since they have a warehouse in Pennsylvania which is where I live.

You can check with Amazon for your D700. You may be able to avoid the tax by using them.

 11.
Dugave,

B&H and Adorama are your safest NYC retailers for camera equipment. I have spent $$$$$$$$$ with the 2 of them and have never had an issue. You will get the best prices that are out there. Sure, you can go ebay, but and I mean but, you never really know what your getting. Since your not from the US, a USA warrantied Nikon may not mean a big deal to you, those of us who do live here it is a big deal. Many ebay retailers deal in grey market items that cannot be warrantied by Nikon USA. B&H and adorama give you the choice if you want grey market or Nikon USA products.

As far as the US postal system goes. If the item does not require a signature for delivery, and it will not fit in your mail box, then yes they may leave it at your door. This is also true with UPS and FedX. However, on most items through B&H, Adorama, and even ebay sellers, if the item is worth more than say $100 (this number depends on the retailer) they will require a signature for delivery. If you are not home, postal carrier may ask a neighbor to sign for the package, or may leave a note on your door telling you that an attempt to deliver was made. You can then either pick the package up from the carrier or wait for next day delivery. You can also leave a note on your door if you know your not going to be home with instructions of what to do with the package. Since I live in an apartment complex, I have all signed deliveries go to the rental office.

 12.
Every time I do one of these lists I start to think that I may have a serious mental problem. Did I really buy all this stuff, I originally got into photography as a hobby, something to do to save some money rather than going shopping or sitting in the bar. Boy did I screw up.

 13.
I believe Lightroom allow tethered shooting.

You said you had Camera Control 2 and that it doesnt work. Can we assume you connected the camera to your computer via USB cable, turned the camera on, and opened the software?

You may need to set the D700 to allow output thru the USB rather than saving to the memory card.

K

 14.
Everything is fixable, its the price to fix it is whether its worth fixing or not. I would contact Nikon and send it in for an estimate. You may be better off getting something else since the 18-135mm is not highly regarded.
