  1. I highly recommend RMSofP, I've taken two workshops and attended one weekend function, what really stands out about the school is the quality of the instructors and that they stay current on all the technical aspects. The school is always upgrading their equipment and it's a great facility. If you can't come away from their intensive programs and go right to work you haven't been paying attention, and I think that if you feel you're not getting the areas covered that interest you all you have to do is ask. Ask Juan de Santa Anna, he worked for them for years.
  2. I'm not naive enough to not realize that my imagery wouldn't be heisted to other sites, it's just that this is the first I've known of it. The bottom line for me is that I treat people with respect and honesty and that's where I'm naive, I expect the same from others. Any kind of "theft" makes me feel violated, and I have no one to blame but myself because I knowingly posted my imagery to PN. The point here is if we are to be "in control of our lives" than we need to make those decisions, for ourselves, whether to post or not. This isn't about monetary gain, but about protecting my personal creativity, that's important to me, and it's about principles and where do we draw the line. I haven't read all the posts but I do know some folks will think this is all silly nonsense and others will feel a tad pissed off like myself. I think part of my frustration is the feeling of helplessness in a situation like this, there's not a damn thing I can do about it but whine.....and send a complaint or two in the right directions. No big deal for some, a real barn burner for others.
  3. Well it appears I'm another "victim" of theft too! So it sounds like the only recourse is to NOT post anywhere on the web including PN, that's sad 'cause I really enjoy my time here and have learned a lot, but with an impending Gallery Show and the possible sale of my work I just DO NOT want my imagery floating around the internet.
  4. Thank you Rainer for the prompt reply and I will certainly look into that as a solution......my puzzle is that with my old computer and Windows I never experienced the problem. I've been hearing "rumors" that Vista is giving photographers fits with their RAW files. When I use "Pictures" in Vista to store my photo files, even JPEG's, and I go to edit in Elements I get the message "can't read the imbedded files" something to that nature anyway. I'm a total imbecile when it comes to computer problems, "Keep It Simple Susan" is my motto.
  5. I'm one of those people that has to bitch about the ratings once in a while just to test the waters, I've learned to not take them seriously but still feel that many of the 3/3's are not deserved, be it my work or others. There is ONE change to the rating system that I'd like to see implemented....that when an image is presented in the ratings quene that the photographers name would also be anonymous.
  6. I appreciate the fact Philip that you read my concern and I'll eagerly await the upgrades and report back as to the speed of my workspace. Gracias.....

Thank you Micki for your feedback too, this is a great site for sharing photography and as any site will, it has it's glitches, but it's been weeks now since my personal workspace was running with any speed at all.

  7. I'm getting really frustrated with this site, if I want to access my personal

workspace and follow up on comments and post critiques I have to hook up to PN

early in the morning or very late at night otherwise the site is so slow I

find myself spending less and less time on Photo.Net, and that's a shame

because I enjoy the people I meet and the help that I've gotten.

  8. "A little heavy", I recently bought the 70-200 f/2.8 and it's a wonderful lens but when it's on my 20D I feel like I'm packing a cannon around! The extra stop is good for those wonderful oversaturated sunset/sunrise shots that are so popular here on PN (tongue in cheek) and that I shoot all the time.
  9. I tend to agree with Niranjn about limiting the number of images that a PN member can upload per day. I think even if we had an approved group of critiquers they would be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of images submitted for critique, and the time it would take to rate and comment would certainly limit their time allocation on any given image. I, for one, would be willing to limit my posts to a smaller given number. The issue of ratings will continue I'm sure, but I think that a solution that should/could/would work for the majority can be implemented.....I just don't have the answer.
  10. I'm having the same problem and I haven't done a thing different than in the past when I uploaded an image. After several trys I finally gave up and came here to the Site feedback forum to leave a note about the problem and lo and behold someone had beat me to it.
  11. The latest POW is a good example of a "child portrait" that "works", ask yourself why does it work?! Is it the lighting, the colors, use of DOF, spontaneous pose, attractiveness of the subjuect, the subjects expression,.......? What aspect of portraits are you struggling with? Study some of the greats like Avedon, Evans, Bresson, Disfarmer, Bourke-White, Lange, Arbus (now there's some "original" work), and decide what it is about their compositions that inspire you and learn from example. You already do some really good work, keep shooting what it is that makes your soul feel good and you'll continue to feel motivated.
  12. Joe has a good point about the "easy" comments like "good photo", I tend to leave nothing but encouraging comments because I really don't have the technical skills to offer much in the way of constructive critiques, I think we can all use a little encouragement and praise. If there's anyone out there who doesn't like my positive comments on their images they can let me know and I'll cease leaving them. Personally I'd rather have an "atta girl" than nothing at all and I love those encouraging critiqes that point out my images faults and how to correct them or improve on them. Most folks on PN want to be helpful but frankly it takes a lot of time to post, read the forums, review the images you want to leave comments on, and respond to others thoughtful enough to reciprocate. And yes Darius I like your image very much but really wouldn't have an opinion on how to improve it, the above suggestions seem valid.
  13. Welcome to Photo.Net JH, I have a 20D, it was my first DSLR camera and I love it. Before I decided which camera to buy I spent hours reading reviews and going through the images posted on PN that had the 20D listed under the picture as the camera used to create the composition. The 20D has been "upgraded" to the 30D but now if I could afford it I'd buy the 5D for the full frame advantage but in the mean time I'll continue to enjoy my 20D. Get busy and start posting some photos.
  14. Good morning David, no need to disagree with me because I agree with you, I think there are quite a number of PN posters that are as talented and creative as the well known recognized masters of photography, I just think that the general composite of images posted to PN are not of that quality. I was looking through some of my photography books early this AM and going through some of Tina Modotti's images and most of them, if posted to PN, would not of received good ratings. She's really a little known photographer but she had a very interesting and controversial life and I think perhaps when a person has some notoriety and publicly led life artistic credentials are often attributed to them through the media. And certainly the ability to self promote can advance one's artistic career and in this day and age a good agent can be money well spent. With this said, yes, there are many many talented people in myriad creative disciplines that never achieve the recognition they so richly deserve. Perhaps that's one of the reasons, we as photographers, are posting here on PN, high ratings can mean our one little moment of fame. You are talented, creativity comes in many disguises.
