Middle School b-ball.

I use Canon's 85mm f1.8 lens primarily. Keep the camera in aperture mode, turn the ISO to 1250 or 1600, and shoot in gyms where the light allows a shuuter speed of 1/800 or higher.
Unfortuneately many gyms just don't have the lighting necessary for decent shots. Also, I'm not a big fan of using flashes as it interferes with the players.
I've added some more detail with examples on my blog.

Invest in Canon's 85mm f1.8 (~$375). Sit under the basket, stay in Aperture mode, ISO 1600, and your shutter should end up between 1/500 - 1/1000 depending upon th elight in the gym.

What do you recommend to get the rear glass replaced on a Canon Mark
II....simply send it to Canon? Or can it be replaced by myself? This is the
large glass plate on the left hand side of the rear of the camera.

Go for the 85mm f1.8. The f-stop advantage out weighs the focal length issue. I use the Canon version for basketball games. it's the only lens I found to be acceptable in the low-lit gym of a Michigan middle school.

I just picked up a perfect condition 300mm f2.8 (non-IS) lens, but I am
looking for the manual. Does anyone know where I can find a copy? Canon no
longer manufactures this lens. I tried looking into their web site, but
couldn't find anything.

What lens and setting would you recommend for taking full moon shots? I have
a 20D with 70-200 f2.8 or 300mm f4 plus 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters. Thanks!

Thank you (at least to some of you)!

I upgraded the firmware to v 2.0 and now the sensor cleaning option
does not seem to be visible anymore according to where the Canon
manual shows it should be.
Has anyone cleaned their sensor? Any tricks/advice? I have 2 small
specks of dirt on each picture which I believe are on the sensor.

Has any one used Picasa from Google as an editor? It's obviously
much less powerful than PS and others, but it's seems extremely easy
to use for every day, simple fixes.
Thanks!

It worked....thanks!

Has anyone had problems updating the firmware on the 20D? I good
not get my CF card to recognize it.

Thanks.....what is an acceptable shutter speed for sports (1000 +)? I have a 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4X teleconverter, so I try to keep the aperture around 4-5.6.

I'm a litle new to this hobby.......What do you recommend using when
shooting soccer outdoors (normally bright days)? Should I use
the "sports" mode which controls the ISO (400) or switch to one of
the manual modes and lower the ISO? If switching, which mode(s)
would you recommend and what ISO setting should I use? Thanks for
your help!

To All:
Great comments...thank you! I checked the referenced web sites as well. Everyone seems to love this lens. Sound like a great 40th b-day present.

Any experience with this lenses? What about using a 1.4x
teleconverter?
-
Rich,
Do you like the push/pull of the 100-400mm? I thought it would be a bit difficult to get used to. Also, does it take better pictures at 400mm than a 2X teleconverter on my 70-200 f2.8?
Thanks!

What lense or lense combinations do you recommend for taking soccer
pictures? I have a 20D with the 70-200 f2.8 with the 1.4X
teleconverter. It works well, but when the action is either too
close or too far away, I lose the opportunity to take the shots. I
hate to compromise quality either.....thoughts? Thanks!

I have a 70-200 f2.8 (non-IS) and use the 1.4X teleconverter all the time to shoot soccer games. It works great. With a little practice you can achieve a high percentage of pictures to keep.
