1.
Nice start, Henk. I especially like the last one. Mine for the week is the last of my raptor shots from the raptor rescue center here in WV. His right wing was injured when he was hit by a car, but he seems to have retained his spirit. Shot with the 55-300mm on my K-5.

00alC7-492889684.jpg.d0e758921a3e18595bbfa7f98feeee22.jpg

 2.
Scott - Yes, I'd say it's consistent. That's more a guess than it is the result of any kind of rigorous comparison. Also, as Steve mentioned, the performance was noticeably better after fine-tuning the autofocus in the camera.

 3.
I have the Pentax 55-300/4-5.8 and I'm very happy with it. The lead photo in the current POTW (here on this board) was taken with it on my K-5, as were several of my contributions to previous (recent) POTW threads. I'm not sure of the current price, but it's well below your $500 threshold.

 4.
Kicking things off with another shot from the raptor rescue center exhibition a couple weeks ago. This guy's a barn owl who suffered the loss of a wing as a chick and is now a permanent resident there. He was very dignified.

00ajhP-491271584.jpg.bf594d5b7019843300f579b1fd1a2eaa.jpg

 5.
Here are a couple that were shot (with the K-5 and 55-300mm zoom) at a presentation given by a raptor rescue facility here in WV. If the falcon looks annoyed, it's because he had just been taken out of an air-conditioned vehicle on a hot day.

00aiHx-489531584.jpg.736c581b67e9f96b4c8e032de6b4778f.jpg

 6.
Here's one taken from the shoulder of Interstate 81, near Bristol, TN. Shot (you should pardon the expression) with the K-5 & Tamron 28-75.

00ags5-487947584.jpg.53e1393e11f0fbd8a906a206e3beb124.jpg

 7.
Nobody's up yet?
I'll kick things off with another shot of the wren couple occupying our decorative birdhouse. Haven't seen the chicks yet and it seems like it's getting awfully late in the season.

00afGu-485949584.jpg.dc1660f7289e389fc4cbdcef9afe0708.jpg

 8.
It's possible to set up the K-x in the way that you're describing. The tools menu lets you turn off the Guide Display, as it's called, and the recording mode menu lets you turn of the Instant Review. So it's a two-step process, but it results in the screen never being lit up unless you press the Menu or Info buttons. If you want the Instant Review but not the Info, you can have that also, and you can set the Instant Review time for as little as one second.

 9.
Now that my electricity's back on, I can post a couple shots of a house wren who, with his/her mate (I can't tell the difference), has set up housekeeping in what we thought was a purely decorative birdhouse. But we're humans, what do we know?

00aZCe-478741584.jpg.31efda13e29510a0cf62cd2bc655ebde.jpg

 10.
I was at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC, last weekend. The campus is on both sides of a local road and there's a footbridge that connects the two parts. I was strolling across with my K5 & 50-200, looking for photo ops and spotted this at the end of one of the girders of the bridge. I almost missed it, it's so small and out of the way. I couldn't get the angle I wanted, the railing was in the way. I just wish I had been there when they put it out. These kids today.

00aXRb-476671584.jpg.267f086585169235d97e3715ccd18597.jpg

 11.
Looks like it falls to me to kick this week off with some wildlife shots taken on the Yellowstone trip. Both were shot with the K-5/18-135 combo.

00aUHC-473193584.jpg.5b5e761f72ed17d96324e4219de57c1a.jpg

 12.
Henk - not sure if it fits your definition of a compact, but I use the Panasonic LX-5 for exactly this purpose. It seems nearly perfect for it and the image quality is impressive. It's got an optional electronic viewfinder that attaches to the hot shoe, and I prefer using that - it tilts for 90 degree viewing, saves battery life to not have the LCD screen on all the time, etc. The camera and viewfinder will fit easily in a small case or in a generously-sized jacket pocket.

 13.
A couple more from Yellowstone. The water in the pools there is colored by microorganisms, not minerals. First is the one that's called Morning Glory.

00aSem-471603584.jpg.00a3c5aead07d914f6ba7a410adb6b96.jpg

 14.
Ouch. Condolences, Howard.
Not long ago, I bought an FA 31 Ltd. from a Pentax Forums member -- he thought it had some issues so he sent it to KEH. They, in turn, sent it to C.R.I.S, who fixed it. Whether that's routine for KEH, who knows, but if it is it'd be more efficient to just send it to C.R.I.S. in the first place. Maybe call KEH and ask them first - ?? I've had good luck with C.R.I.S., and pretty quick turn-around.
I've had the impression that Eric limits himself to film-era gear, but maybe that's wrong.

 15.
Two more from Yellowstone. The first is one of the many active pools, the second a shot of the Firehole River. We were there the first week of May and it snowed the first two days of the visit.

00aR5J-469743584.jpg.a125f4ec0309d4132dcb1342ea39c8ac.jpg

 16.
I've been away for a few weeks, part of the time at Yellowstone and the rest wandering aimlessly around the Colorado Rockies. Man, this is a big country. Here's a couple from Yellowstone - one of the many geysers (not OF) and one of the many residents. More to come in the weeks ahead.
