How much digital noise are present in your pictures? The noise will contribute greatly to JPG file size. I learned that if I use noise reduction software as a final step, the final JPG file size is under 1 Meg with minimum compression. While the same picture if I save without noise reduction is about 3 Megs with the same minimum compression.

The picture is much underexposed. Most of the details are there, but you have to play a little to see them. The biggest problem with underexposed pictures is the noise. I played a little with curves and colors and I got the picture below. Given correct exposure to show all the details, and the image will look much sharper.

When I need to lift something, first, I use an eliptical marquee to select more than I need, than I use Magic Stick in the subtruct mode and disselect what I don't need. It is much easier on the solid background.

I don't see any problems with your pictures. The focus is what it should be. If your complaint is about objects in the background, it's not the focus, it's depth of field. At full opening of 2.8 you have very small depth. Try to take pictures with the lens more closed - more like 6.3 or even 8, the speed would have to be adjusted to slower speed, so the motion will be more blur, but more of the picture will be in focus.

Red (with a little blue and even green, why not?)
