    Transient Cup

          26

Great capture. And really meta too! A picture of a drop into a cup, forming exactly the same thing!

Did you drop a marble or something similar to get this effect?

  1. This is a fantastic photo. I can almost see it as a poster for a fantasy movie. The lines, the wind blowing the sand, the rays of light shining through the clouds...there's nothing I'd change about this photo.

Isn't it fun the more technology grows, the more we embrace the imperfections of the past?

The double exposure and blue tint create a great dreamy effect.

I like the paint-like effect the large aperture creates. I'd have probably cropped the stem along the left edge, since I'd prefer to have all attention drawn to the two "Divas"

Flies are usually very skittery; how did you get close enough without scaring it away?

It's interesting how macro photography can turn a pretty ugly object into an ugly pretty.

  2. I'd prefer a 3:2 or similar ratio, because it feels like there's too much space at the bottom (i.e. cropping just above the green streak across the bottom).

Also, the  upper left quadrant seems a little too blue.

  3. Fantastic colors and "posing" by the bird. I also how the background separates into 2 blocks of green (although I feel that there's a tad too much background, making the bird looks small within the frame).

I couldn't immediately tell what the photo was when I saw the thumbnail, but the lighting and shapes intrigued me. Seeing the full size makes me enjoy the photo even more. I like your choice to compose asymmetrically.

  4. Thanks for all the comments.

One follow-up question: any suggestions for camera settings? I prefer to get the settings correct during the time of shooting rather than fiddling in post-process. For this shot, I set the lights to slightly overexpose and I set my camera to low contrast and low saturation, but I still needed to do some minor curve adjustments to get the final result you see here.

Is there any way to set my camera to approximate this soft of high key & low sat effect? Do I need to import a customized curve into the camera or can I adjust the built-in settings (camera used was Nikon D700)?

  5. I've been trying to capture photos that depict nudity without the feeling of

overt sexuality. I've done art nudes before, but this is a different

category. It's a tricky tightrope to walk, but I hope I was able to convey

    this feel in this photo.

Any tips on how to improve?

    Thanks for all the comments.

Not much post processing done aside from cropping and some minor curve adjustment. The difference in the model's face and body was due to her make-up. Didn't notice it at the time, but next time I'll have to throw some more light on her body.

Interesting comment about the wall. I actually had a choice between a smooth one and this, and I chose the latter because I liked the textured effect.

It's been a while since I've done bedroom photography. At first I

considered playing with the lighting (source was window light and a

single studio strobe) to get some shadows, but in the end I opted for the

clean and simple look. Too flat?

Sometimes photography is all about being in the right place at the right time. That cloud pattern is a real catch.

Needless to say, it takes a good eye to see such a phenomenon and turn it into a great photo.

I don't even want to think of all the trouble of getting a similar shot done using Photoshop, let alone getting such a great effect in-camera!

This is such a fantastic example of a low key photo that still manages to Pop. I love the placement of random highlights amount all that subdued black/gray. What was your lighting set-up?
