1.
Welcome. Film is great, digital is terrific. It's all good!

 2.
Are you saying the pictures weren't pink before? Did you have it sent to a black/white mode, and now it's in color mode?
I have an infrared-modified camera. Normal behavior is that the images are strongly magenta and require post-processing. Also, I try to shoot at higher f-stops (f/8, f/11) to make focusing less critical.

 3.
I found this timeline useful:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Pentax_digital_interchangeable_lens_cameras

 4.
"Federal prosecutors on Monday announced a deal to drop a criminal case against Gibson Guitar Corp. after the instrument maker acknowledged its importations of exotic wood violated environmental laws."

also discussed here http://www.photo.net/off-topic-forum/00ZGB8

 5.
Gimp or Irfanview. I started with Irfanview, use both now, but in hindsight I should have just started with Gimp and been done with it.

 6.
Avoid the Metro if at all possible. Taxi if you can afford it - they're cheap.

 7.
A 70-200/2.8 is available - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_D_FA*_70-200mm_lens
Weather-sealed, to boot. Time will tell which of the numerous legacy lenses can hold up to the sensor.

 8.
No one has yet responded - probably because a decent answer would involve a 20 page essay. Since you are in school, consider making an appointment with one of your professors to discuss this topic. Use that immediate connection to find other working professionals and speak to them. Personal contacts will serve you well when you later look for work.

You can also find many writeups on the topic with a web search. It's good you're thinking about this while still in school - good luck!

 9.
Your father knew his craft. My father had the same camera and I used it for a while thirty years ago. I liked it and came away with an appreciation for rangefinders that continues today.

 10.
Perhaps Fuji customer service could give you an estimate or referral. If you're in the US, http://www.fujifilmusa.com/support/ServiceSupportContact.do

 11.
Many photo sites let you sort/search photos by camera model. For example, photos taken with the TG-4 from flicker:
https://www.flickr.com/cameras/olympus/tg-4/
No one but you can say if you'll be "okay with the quality". As with any camera, it will depend on the person behind the camera, not the hardware.

 12.
> Unless this is just the 'next step' in a huge, clever marketing campaign
Yeah, I'll believe this reformation when she donates to charity all the money she made in her former life. Until then it could well be Step 2 of her online career.

 13.
Pentax SLRs have many options for data backs, I assume other brands would as well. Nowhere near $500, either--more like $50 or less.
http://www.kmp.bdimitrov.de/misc/backs/index.html

 14.
Welcome to the party, Robert. Check out http://scantips.com/.

 15.
The "focal length" of a lens does not change with focusing distance. Perhaps you meant something other than focal length?

 16.
> Tried, but don't have a Facebook account.
It might interest you and others to know that even people who don't volunteer for F-book are assimilated anyway:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/facebook-shadow-profiles-you-probably-have-one-too-weekly-facebook-tips/

 17.
I'm very pleased with the K-50 as well. It is the first camera that has made low-light shooting a pleasure for me.
