1.
Hmm, if asking for ALL what you would need, you are asking for whole know how :)
It would be better to write down what you know and where you want to get. What kind of services you want to offer, who is you target and so on.
I was working in print shops on different positions (including supervisor) so I could help you.
regards
tomas

  2.
Tommy thanks a lot.
I saw that video review while I was doing my research but still wasnt sure.
I cant try that bag in my country,so I want to be sure that it will fit for my purpuse before I order it from the net.

Thanks for trying.
I want to use the bag mainly with this 3 setups

1.D3,24-70,14-24,70-200, one flash, some cables and databank for travel/street photography.I am planning to go to India next year and I have just huge lowepro shoulder bag which looks to ,,photographic,,.
2.D3,24-70,14-24,70-200, 2flashes, gorilla pod, remote controls and some small accesorries for my strobist shooting in local music club. For this purpose I had crumpler bag,but while it was fine for 5D,its too small for D3.
3.D3,24-70,70-200,flash and MAYBE notebook for going to coffeebar.

From what you wrote I asume that this bag will be fine for all of this.

Otherwhise any other pro or cons I should know? Whould you recommend it?

  3.
As I am looking for a shoulder bag for street-travel and club shooting so I have a question for think tank urban disguise 35 users.
I would like to ask if you can put Nikon D3 with 24-70/2,8 attached while having 70-200/2,8 and 14-24/2,8 on the sides.Everywhere is written that you can put D3 with 70-200 attached, but that is not useful for street shooting.
Of course I would like to have some flashes and accessories in another pockets.
Thanks in advance
Tomas

  4.

BILL :Thanks, but as was written by Luis, it is not safe to wear military stuff. Police will think that I am radical rioter (they already sometime do think that as I am just 25) and demonstrator will think I am a hidden policeman.
Luis : Thanks for tips. What kind of gas mask you use? There are many types, big ones with filter or just small for painters

Mikael: Thanks, I will check that site for inspiration, even I will buy it here in Slovakia because of postage.

Clive: I already did http://www.lightstalkers.org/advice-on-helmet-for-demonstration-needed#latest

  5.
Hi,
I would like to ask for advice on helmet. Main use would be on demonstration, rioting, etc so hopefully no bullets.
So far I was borrowing a mountaineer helmet, but it didn’t protect from the side.
Also I would be interested to know how do you deal with police gas use at demonstration.
Thanks in advance
Tomas

  6. Hi,

firstly> cool down, no worries, its just a press conference :)

    some advices>

1.flash - take it, if needed use it. You will see the quality and quantity of

the light. You have D3 so you mostly can shoot without flash on higher iso. If

you will use flash bounce it (don't use direct flash). When I use flash I mostly

set-up MANUAL on camera (around 1/160-1/250s and f 2,8 - 5,6 but this is just

example,it depends on light and object).

    2. take more pictures than you need - but don't make 600pic ;). It can happen

that you will misfocus so have more copies of the same composition.

3.WHAT YOU WILL NEED - it depends on for who you are making this photos but the

    basic is>

a.whole scene - everybody important on one picture. Not a translator or assistant.

    b. !!! group portrait of key actors (example prime minister with minister )

    c. portrait of everybody - more of somebody important. Both formats, just the

face and half body, with some gesture and without (we call it passport picture -

there are mostly used in small size)

d.if you shooting for a sponsor have a picture of key actor with some sing of

the sponsor in the background (sharp -don't use f2,8 :)

    e. sometimes is good to have picture of whole scene including the press members.

    f. if they will sign something have that, the same if they will shake hands

4.set-up in advance. Check the light, set the flash, lenses, card, etc. Think in

advance from where they will come (be ready for that), where they will sit, what

    angles, etc

5.Mind your moves. If you move (and if you can is good to move to have different

angles) check your back. Other photographers and cameramans will not like you if

you will get to they picture. Be polite, but still mind that you are there to

    take pictures :)

If there will be to many photographers maybe you will need to shoot from to top.

You can practice this at home. With liveview is easier.

    6. Get the names in advance. If you can google them before to know who is who,

who need to be on the picture. It happens to me that I was taking portrait of the

    translator :).

If there are signs with the names on the table take detail picture of them in

advance. You will not lose it :)

7.If you know how to use it, shoot Raw.

8.if there is some security, introduce yourself before (just say hi could be

enough), have a PRESS card on your neck.If security guy will get to your picture

don't worry to ask him to move a bit.

9.don't take too big backpack.Have all lenses by hand for quick change.

I can think about something else know, maybe after another press conference :)

Good luck and share your results

PS:excuse my english, i haven't been writing in english for a while

  7. Hi,

i am thinking about to use flickr or smugmug as online backup and presenting solution.

My idea is to put nearly all my images (resized to 6mp) to one of this sites and use it to show my friends

and family normal photos (as partys, trips, family, etc) which i dont want to have on my personal

website.I would like to set it up so that public can see max size of 1000pixels.6mp would be just for me

    as online backup.

It allso should be able to get keywords from iptc.

My question is which of this services you would sugest? And if you use a service like this.

    thank you

  8. pico digoliardi>

The term ,,old days,, have been used by Michael Ging.

ad RATIOS> I think there are ratio standards developed from the history of cameras, medium and paper size. Mostly used are 3:2, 1:1,4:

By this I mean the photography generally not just the photojournalism. At least I havent seen the photography exhibition where the ratios

    like 3:2.369, 4:2.476 etc.were used.

You wrote ,,They always find a way to crop just about anything." I see this, but do you crop your own pictures with freecrop?Do you think it

is fine? that was one of the points of my question. Not just how it is, but if you like it like that.

    JEFF:

,,There is no "integrity of the image" in the same way there is not "integrity of the word." Articles get rewritten and photos get cropped,

it's the way it is. If you don't like it, you can try starting your own newspaper."

I cant agree. Like the rewritting needs to be done by person who understands composition of the text, so the photos should be cropped and

edited by person who understands photography. definetely there are photos which are composed to some format, have some composition and logic

that cant be cropped without losing its power. I know there are not many and not so often. But there are.

    Edward:

,,It is the editor's responsibility to crop pictures to fit the needs of the story and the layout as an whole."

This is the thing which I would like to know. In your papers its croping and layout responsibilty of the page editor (who also edits text and

manages writing journalist), the photo/picture editor who communicates with page editor and photographers or the graphic editor ?

Because so far I found that page editors mostly dont understand the photography/visual communication/composition and try to fit photo so they

dont need to edit the text.

And people from graphic department are thinking in terms of cullums, types and borders so they just make a box on the page in which they want

to put any photo.Dont mind too much the head cropout, composition rules, etc

And now the photoeditor ... as this position is new in my papers, I would like to know what is his job in your papers and what do you think it

    should be.

  9. PICO

Is the editor the only person who makes aftercrop in your papers?

As far as I know> Photographer is croping from the reality with his camera/lens before shooting and with enlarger/pc editor after to show his view of the situation. I also do some croping if, for example, I have 70mm lens and it will be better to have 80mm.

I think the (photo)editor's job is(should be?) to design/crop photography to give some visual impact to the design of the paper page. But please tell me how it is in your papers. To get better-global view.

,,There is no standard, and why should there be?"

As far as I know, there are some basic ratios which developed from the history of photography.

One thing wonders me> I cant imagine an exhibition of newspaper photography where will be 10 photos and every single will have a totally different kind of ratio (example 2:2.69, 4:2.15, 3:2.367 etc)

    Kelly

    Can be.

I noticed that many photoreporters doesn't leave any frame around subject.

  10. interesting...

Can you please more explain that differences in cropping in ,,old days,, than now?

Do I understand it properly that in old days the photographer was the only person who did some cropping to photo?

When you are making some cropping do you use ratios or free crop?

Do you have a photoeditor in your paper?

I hope I am not asking for some nonpublic information.

I forgot to mention, that I have still just few months of pressphotography experience,so I am ,,new,, in all this. but I do photography for longer.

  11. Hello,

I would like to open discussion about cropping in photojournalism. I was

studying the use of photography in newspapers recently(which i get to my hands)

and I found one interesting thing (at least to me)> use of many different aspect

    rations of photographs.

Sometimes it is classic standard like 3:2,1:1 4:3, 16:9 but mostly times it is

    just how it fits.

What really surprised me is, that this is not causes just by picture

desk/graphic department, but that many news photographers are cropping they

pictures to any ratios without any standards.

I would like to know, what do you think about it. It would be good of course

to introduce your background a little bit.

    My opinion

Me as a photographer who learned most by the self education I try all the

time to compose to the standard ratios witch I like (full frame 3:2 without any

crop,3:2,16:9,1:1). I did this on college, I try to do it as a photo reporter, I

do it as an artist. If I made a picture that I found impossible to crop nicely to

this ratios,I think that it is MY mistake and MY fault.

    thank for your time
