Photo narration in an exhibition, I ment. Not the narration for a story in a magazine or blog. Just to be clear.
-
If a narration of a photograph is bigger than the photo itself then it's not a good photograph. What do you think?

Thanks to all who participated in this discussion. Actually not all ( sorry for not mention clearly at the begaining ) but some photographers trend to make photos like painters. It is their own choice or liking. I was following that last few years. Some are making portraits with same looking wardrobe & lighting style as the painter's did. Some are making landscape with over saturated colors + heavy HDR in post processing just to give look of a painting. Anyone can check that in the web. One can get insparetion or composition ideas from painters work, no problem with that. But to give a painterly look like brush stroke & other techniques looses the essence of a photograph, I think.
I presume in near future, camera software will be able to give us master painter's signature look once you click the shutter button. No need to do it in post processing.

I have been looking for the answer in the net but could not find. Photography has it's own style & voice. Just to show oneself an artist should photographers imitate painter's vision or style ?

Thanks to all perticipents. Everyone explained from their point of view. Mark Keefer has written well. Some said internet, some prints or about skills. Well, hard to say what went wrong in a word. But you have to adapt new ideas of doing commercial photography business for sure.

I was thinking it last few days. Digital photography made a lot of photographers who might never thought of being one. Now competition is fears. So, working cheaper is the new trend now. Though surviving in a long run will be a challenge.
The rich clients become more benifited from digital as they can buy cheaper services. In short, made commercial photographers poor.

For some years, specially product photography has got the look & feel of 3D /CGI. Then what's the point of shooting a pro quality beer bottle and later turn it in to a computer generated image in post production ?

Hasselblad or Mamiya is a nice option. You can also go for Pentax as well. All of them has
digital backs available.

We used to wait for the print
like a father waiting for a baby

This time you are lucky, Sandy. Always carry your camera crossing right to left side of your shoulder.
It helps to prevent accidents.

Glen, actually every camera is a precision made built-in watch when it comes to aperture-shutter relation.

Hi, no question or comments today. Just found today that I am with Photo.net for last 10 years. Thanks to all who inspired me to write on this forum. Thank you.

Though the word photography came from Latin word photo & graphos (drawing with light ) but now a days it has become
photographics ( drawing with software). The real essence of photography is missing. See the work of old master
photographers. You will find simple composition and great lighting techniques that captured the mood or emotion of the
subject, may it be a portrait or a landscape photography shot by 4×5 film camera. Digital cameras gave us speed in
photography but the emotion is missing. Long ago a poet wrote " Science has given us motion but taken away our emotions."

Your 8 MP mobile phone camera image will give the same or nearly same as your 8 MP DSLR image size. But the quality of images will not be the same because of sensor size and fine optics.

Square Format reminds me the Hasselblad 500CM of film era. Good for portrait /still life composition, at least for me.

If you have a 17-35mm lens then it's good for architectural works. Just keep some extra space around your subject to be corrected ( perspective ) later in Photoshop. The best to use a 17mm or 24mm perspective control lens.

Been wondering if I have the skill for professional work?

60% marketing + 40% photo skill. At least 70% of your income should come from photography business if you are a pro.
Try to find your market where your skill fits.
