I want to start shooting digital stock photography. The site I've been looking at
is http://www.istockphoto.com . Do any of you shoot and upload images for
this site? If so, do you find it worthwhile? Is it possible to shoot stock for a site
like this, and be reasonably succesful at it?
Thanks in advance for your replies,
Kent

Try to find the Sept/Oct. issue of Digital Photo Pro. Page 46-50. Some good
tipskys in there.

If you're testing lighting systems, why not rent ? You'll save money, and once
paid by the hair salon, you'll be able to afford more.

Don't forget to get one of those fancy vests with all the pockets. Nothing says
"photographer" Like those fancy vests ! Oh, and hold out for the D200.

I've had my trusty FM2 for the last 15 years. It's a great camera with the MD12
motordrive. Can't believe how cheap they are on Ebay.

Hi Meg,
There's an article on this very topic in one of my magazines at home. I think it's
either the the October Shutterbug, or the Oct. Digital Photo Pro. I'll check it out
and let you know.

I love this photographer's work. Never be shy to email photographers to ask
them how they achieved certain things. I do it all the time, and have always
had positive replies. I have questions fired my way once in a while, and see it
as a compliment that others want to know how you work, and the methods/
equipment you use.

Use those clamps with the rubber tips. to hols the roll at the edges.
You can get 'em at Home depot.
-
You can use a black piece of card/foam and place it so that it gives the object
a defining black edge.

I emailed him and asked how he made these portraits. This was his response:
Hej kent,
Thanks for writing, thanks for you words.
Your friend and you are right. I used a Pentax 6 X 7 medium format camera
with a 105 mm lens and a macro ring. So the images are, basically, taken with
a macro ring. And then I asked the subjects to step into the shade and hold a
piece of tinfoil below their chin in order to reflect the light coming from the sky.
Kind regards,
Simon

I would send him a note saying you love his work, and you'd be interested in
knowing how he lit the subjects. I don't think he'd have a problem telling you.

Thanks for the replies. I want a fairly basic set-up, and was also wondering
what other brand softboxes/reflectors can be fit to the Alien Bees. I was
reading that Balcar products are compatible, but arer there others?
-
I have been researching Alien Bees studio lighting. I have found very little
negatives, and many positive comments/reviews on these. Are these lights
worth considering? I would probably get 2-3 AB1600's . Any thoughts or
comments on the Bees?

I am a portrait photographer. I work full time as a picture framer, and book jobs
for the weekends. this is a good way to make the transition from part time to
full time. If you jump in, and are forced to get work just to make rent/bills/etc.
it's way too stressful, and it won't be fun. The more stressed you are about
getting jobs, the less (I feel) you will get, and enjoy.
I've taken the pressure out of photography, and now things are starting to
really pick up ! funny how things work out.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

I am shooting stills for a commercial. I am fairly new to this, and need to know
if I can match the ISO of the film in the camera to my film in the still camera
with no problems. I will be shooting transparency. What would anyone
reccomend as far as film type for this?
Thanks for your replies...

I am a photographer in Canada specializing in dog photography.
For a portrait sitting of 1 hour, plus a print option of 1 - 16x20" , 2- 11x 14" , 3 - 8x10"
, or 4- 5x7" prints, I charge $300.00. I shoot 5 rolls of 120 film, and give them contact
sheets as proofs. This gives me $100 for materials and processing, and $200 for the time.
Here is my question: I have a dog grooming store/daycare that want shots for the home,
and for their business. They want a photo shoot of the dog walking, a photo shoot of the
dog bathing , and portraits/ detail shots (close-ups of paws, noses, etc.)
The photos for the business will be used for their postcards( three images possibly), and
possibly one for their signage on the exterior of the store.
I have an idea of what I will charge for the sitting fees, but what should I charge for image
usage for the business. I was thinking of giving them a flat fee for the sign and postcard
photo rights.
Whaddya think?

I always shoot the dogs in natural light. Go outside, and take some cool black
and white shots. Have a look at my samples...
