1.
I have two versions one for Lecia M and the other for Nikon F. Being able to shoot with my old pals is great. The fit to my ep-2 feels well engineered and stable. I do find that when focusing on infinity, I have to back the lens off a little bit. This is more the case with the M-mount than the F, but it is definitely noticeable on both adapters.

  2.
Thanks for the feedback! I have some more negs which I haven't gotten around to scanning yet. With the sun in the west, I was able to get N S and E. Not having used the 8X10 in a few years I was pretty conservative with the boards for fear of finding vignette. The roof of the tower-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson_Bromo-Seltzer_Tower
is actually pretty small and has some aeriel support wires crossing it. That combined with not wanting to stand next to the open crenulations played a larger part in composition than I care to think about :-)
The edge of the first stadium in the south view is Camden yards. It's to bad that the Hilton was in the way. When originally built the fans had a great view of the Bromo tower which is a Baltimore Icon. Now they get a big white box. In the end I was just happy to still have my dark cloth after fighting the wind for it the whole time.
Here's one from inside the clock face.

  3.
Hey Derek,
Thanks for the kind words! Looking at your profile you are going to love the ASG. Your outdoor shots are great and that kind of subject will be well served in 4x5. The narrow DOF stuff (shots of your Son) will be a lot of fun as well.
As to the tripod, my setup is heavier than a normal ASG due to the gigantic lens I mounted(aero-ektar). I had to upgrade to a majestic studio head on the tripod for that reason. The tri-pod itself is a Manfrotto 475b aluminum, with a center column that I make a point not to use with the 4x5. I have also used an 8x10 camera on this tri-pod with no issues. I have used the ASG with a mono-pod or even handheld without to much trouble. My viewfinder is innacurate (damaged adjustment screw) so I focus on the glass which keeps me on the tri for most applications.
My workflow right now is strange due to being in an apartment where I can't do a darkroom. My son is two and having all the chemistry around makes me nervous anyway. Until I can set a darkroom I shoot e-6 or b/w and take it to a lab. I then scan the film using a very crummy Epson scanner that I have to turn a light box over on to illuminate the film. The scans are ok for the web or for making a cheapo proof sheet. If I have a keeper I will have a drum scan or prints done at the lab. The image on this thread was done at home.
A few things that can be helpful are-
A level (I use a cheap plastic carpenters one)
A good loupe
A pair of 2.75 reading glasses
A large darkcloth
And let's not forget a LENS CAP for fire prevention! :)

  4.
Charles- thanks for the Info and the offer. I patched the hole in an unconventional manner and may contact you if it turns out less than acceptable.
Jim-Thanks! I don't know about Osh Kosh, I'll have to look it up. I bookmarked your webpage a few years ago and pull it up from time to time, I love the photos and the site!

  5.
Thanks everybody for the suggestions and help. My time in the catalog industry in Chicago if nothing else, imbued me with a love of the jury rig, tape, beer, and ill advised repairs(not in that order--usually). Since the camera was a cheapie I decided to try a patch Idea I came up with while staring at the ceiling at 2:53AM. As I mulled the material problem I drifted back to the late 70's and my well loved "toughskins" jeans. Hmmm? What would Mom do? Iron on patches perhaps? A quick trip to the local JO-ANN fabrics yielded a $2 mending fabric packet. The mending fabric was thinner than the denim stuff I was thinking of and while very stylish, the red bandanna pattern didn't seem a wise choice(or light tight for that matter).

I of course couldn't locate the tacking iron that would have been perfect for the job so went with option 2, the household iron. I traced a patch through the hole(Illinois or Africa shaped, I couldn't quite decide) and used that facing glue side out and a larger oval patch, glue side in. I then coated the edge of the repair with silicon fabric adhesive. The idea was to make sure the edges didn't separate and create a better transition from the patch to the curtain. The curtain is supple and spools and un-spools without hanging up. The 1/8 slit seems to bow slightly wide in ther center but I suspect it will not be noticeable other that a slight, slight vignetting. I hear these shutters aren't famous for rock solid accuracy so I'm not too concerned.

This whole affair reminds me of my Triump motorcycle. I acutually enjoyed the excessive trouble-shooting, tweaking and half baked (but cheap) fixes. It's fun to dismantle and learn. I still have the options of releasing the patch(heat), or tracking down a replacement curtain if this is less than functional. I also am following some Speed Graphic Pacemakers on Ebay. Having the front standard motion would be nice. I am now going to drink a beer!

00Sqpb-118943584.thumb.jpg.14ae2fbaedd3c32667e4ea6f5e1c8919.jpg

  6.
Here you go with the pictures of the burn hole. I'm thinking of impregnating some thin black fabric with diluted liquid rubber(like you can dip tool handles in) and applying it to the hole. Has anyone tried this? I'm going to construct a lens cap as well. Luckily the shutter burned in the 1/8(smallest) range which I seldom use.

00Spkc-118509584.thumb.jpg.67d46ca224655dfedbdd6ff8833a2182.jpg

  7.
I was enjoying the beautiful weather today by taking some photo's of my son at the playground. I have an old Speed Graphic with an aero-ektar which I was shooting wide open for a nice dreamy shallow depth of field. I stopped for a moment to relax and take in the day when I smelled smoke. There are signs all over the park notifiying folks NO SMOKING! I was looking around for the @#!hole with the cigarette when I suddenly became aware that there was smoke coming out of my camera. As I peeked in the film back fresh air wafted into the bellows and created a dramatic poof of smoke and flame. Although I was already the subject of much attention and many questions from my fellow park patrons regarding the camera, It was not enough for me apparently so I sat the camera facing directly into the sun. Voila! I now have a nice 2" hole burned into the focal plane shutter. Has anyone patched this material before? can you buy the cloth? Luckily It was an old beat up camera that I got for $50. My main concern was for the lens which seems to have survived the conflagration unharmed. For those of you trying to rekindle your passion in photography this may be just the thing for you!

00SpT6-118375784.thumb.jpg.98ea3ab512ef6d07f22b386e585c06c9.jpg

  8. Hi Jeff,

The masks that came with my glass holder are matte black plastic and are as thick as 4 or 5 sheets of plain printer paper. If you have the blackouts for the 35mm holders it's the same material. Each different mask has a unique hole pattern on the end. I think the holes are codes to tell the scanner what format of film is(6x6,6x7 etc.).

  9. Working in a large catalog studio I am always amused at the reaction of younger interns

and assistants when the 8x10 Deardorff's come out for the occasional client who still

demands film."What's with the old scool camera?". When limited to 2 polaroids and the

shot has to be perfect the first time They tend to pay more attention and learn more about

the basics of photography than thigs like file management and software quirks.

  10. Th aquamarine tint is very distracting to me personally. The subject matter is pleasing but

the crops are a little loose.Step into the action and see what happens maybe with some

toghter shots you could own the aqua tint and make it a trademark.keep going it's the

    right direction.
