  1. Thanks for posting this thread...I'm in the same deliemma and after reading it find the 28-70 2.8 will be my next lens. Gosh do you think I should sell my 24-120 VR before the new one comes out???? I imagine the value with drop with the longer focal range of the 28-200 VR. I hate selling lenses...I'm always afraid I'll need it after it's gone...which is why I have 4 zooms of various quality in the same focal range.
  2. I'm wanting to buy a faster lens in the 24-100 (give or take) focal

range zoom For D70 and D200. I currently have a 24-120 ED VR (a very

nice lens) but the vr is pretty uselss for me as I primarily shoot

motion without a tripod (handhold about just about everything.) I

also have a 17-70 kit lens I never use...so figured I sell these and

get a constant 2.8 near the same focal range. Would like to hear

your input on lenses currently on the market...Nikon only...and your

experiences. The faster focusing the better too. I realize this will

be more $$$$ No dx as I have a 8008 too.

    Thanks guys!

  3. It's so cute to hear you non horse guys talk about photgraphing horses. I do all horses all the time. I've never had a horse spook at a strobe but I have heard it happens. To get "ears up" someone mention crinkly paper...works good. Anything novel works once...MAYBE TWICE...so don't pull out your bag of tricks until you are ready for the shot. Mirros work well too...can get some drama in the face that way. As for Bertrnd's work...I'd love to have his set up but can't afford all the assistants and lighting on a shoot as I am a one woman operation and sometimes am lucky enough to have an assistant. When shooting horses reeber always start small in your movements to get attention and then get bigger depending on the reaction as every horse is different.
  4. Lex I tottaly agree with you as when I do awards shots I have to changes lenses. I run to my car to try a minimize dust but it's a pain. I was thinking of picking up a D100 as I've seen them under 1K now. I still carry a film body as a just in case camera.
  5. Thanks guys for your responses. Yea I know...the D70...but at this point I'm not going to spend 5K on a D2X. I shoot LOTS of images every week and figure my D70 is a throw away (already have close to 20K on it since Jan...but it has paid for itself)... and to be honest I only fill the buffer occasionaly. I think my timing is pretty good (it has GOT to be for what I do.) At the average event I shoot 4 gigs of raw and can't imagine having even more fps to go crazy with ;) I doubt my clients can tell what I'm shooting with...prints look fantastic...especially since I've been doing metallics.

Looks like that 2-400 lens is out of my range for a few more years. maybe rent it? The TC is an option....or a bigma :)

  6. I have the 80-200 2.8 mm Nikon and have never had a problem focusing. Make sure you check your focus settings on the D70 as it will take longer on dynamic area. I shoot action...horseshows, gymkhanas and arenea polo and the lens focuses super fast. Personally I would only use a lens made for my camera instead of a generic. How much money are you really saving by going Sigma. The 80-200 Nikon has been around a long time...there's a 100.00 rebate on it now. Also there is the 70-200 2.8 VR but it's 800 more. Nice lens though.<div>00CGke-23645684.jpg.92cedbd3bd4cfe8ee46bdc230399325b.jpg</div>
  7. I'm coming into this late but I have 4 Nikon zooms and would offer my opinion. The kit lens...18-70 is ok if you shoot in that range. It's only a 3.5 though. Quality is ok, seems to be a consumer type lens. I also have an older 70-210 4-5.6 AF D lens. I love this lens. It's all metal, and the photos are super sharp. Not too heavy, and its fast with the D70. I bought mine new years ago..not sure what they sell for now. They are not made anymore. 70-300 mm 4-5.6 G lens. Ok this lens is toy really. Very soft at 300mm. Slow. BUT...it's good to pack around if you don't want to carry your bag and the photos don't matter. It's very light and made of plastic, around 100.00 and not worth much more. 80-200 ED 2.8 AF D. Big, sharp heavy duty pro lens. I do mostly outdoor shooting and need a well built lens, and this is it. Of course you are going to pay more...mine was near 1000.00 but really I believe with lenses you get what you pay for. My next lens is the 35-70 2.8 then I'm pretty much done. (yeah that's what they all say). I considered the 70-200VR but it was like 700 more and wouldn't fit my Nikon film 8008.
