It is interesting for the point it illustrates to me that focus is in the wrong place .... that I want the bright yellow tip-thingies to be sharp and not the stems ... or at least enough of the yellow thingies to hold my attention. This is the photographers greatest decision choosing a focus point that the viewer will want.

    Happiness

Another example of a photographer being dominated by their camera's format and not cropping for the subject which could loose the blurred tree [and gain on the left] with advantage ... otherwise a great concept and result. The darkness of the tree questions the happiness of the children.

  1. The nose appears more prominent in the thumbnail which attracted me... seems to have disappeared in larger image .. interesting anyway.  Perhaps if you had been a few feet to the left so the bushes become the nose?

    Contentment

Surely the point of the Elves is to stimulate discussion so I don't see any point in complaining that they have selected a dud photo for people to rubbish. The point is WHY it is unsatisfactory to some.

    More Power!

But life is often cluttered .. only photographers create simplicity?
Brilliant piece of work though I wonder if there should not be a bit of reflected leg in the mirror, cannot quite work out the angle.
If only power cords were long enough the airlines would be put out of business.

Until I read JDM and realised it was plant growth with water reflection, I was seeing an abstract rock band image :-) I like and appreciate that it is not completely black and white.

    Learning to fly

Truely mind boggling as to how in the first place to set it up and secondly succeed with a limited capability camera of the period it was taken in. Wunderbar!

  2. An interesting subject matter but better would be to concentrate on color patterns and trim from right ... it is really a vertical shot with the sharp marks leading us to the left so one can happilly crop from the right to remove the triangle of 'whatever'.

  3. A nice close-up though would be better if not central and watch out for bright distracting highlights as on the left.  Since it is leaning to the left a heavy crop from the right would make it much better, to just clear of the main stems.

  4. I cannot see what you saw in this situation but the heavy mass of darkness at the top of a photo is to be avoided in most cases.  Even lightening the water didn't reveaak anything to me ....I'm puzzled :-)

  5. This shot was taken from what I call 'a comfortable working height' when the camera needs to be lower.  It is hard to ask you to get down in the mud for the angle you really need ... why I like my bridge and M4/3 cameras with their swing and tilt LCD for situations like this ... assuming the bird was willing to accomodate and stay there for you.

You are not close enough to the wire which means background is not soft enough to not be distracting.  This is the shot I see, more or less, from that situation ... .

  6. I assume that you have adjustment layers with curves as a sub-tool in your Adobe editor.

When I selected out just the sky and openned in PSP the histogram told me that the picture consisted of just the left half.  I moved the top right point across to the mid point of the top line and I seem to have what you are after I believe.

    refuge from the hail

I assume from the title that the animals are in some sort of shelter and viewing the photographer out in the rain ... what these silly humans do with those shiney boxes that flash light at one?
I prefer this image to the other which is 'posed' while this is 'candid'.

    Noble and Boots

A nice shot of Noble but as a 'picture' he is too central in your composition.

On my monitor which may not be correct his front right legs is rather 'hot' and could be toned down to show detail of his fur. Lovely texture in the boots.

Pardon me if he is a she boss :-)

    Young Lady

I am probably old fashioned but I believe she should be on the left third if she is looking right and a crop to achieve this would remove the dark foliage which has no place in the picture. I probably would have also toned down the highlight blobs behind her.

    'Sweet Morpheus'

It criess out to be an abstract simetrical photo but you were slightly to much to your left to achive this and the different patterns on the wall don't help you so a crop to just include the pillars would help but you would still be off centre ... sorry :-)
