I agree with Mark. I am sure that the foundations of science and/or photo documentary would not crumble if the eye shine from an unnatural light source was removed.

That lens looks as though its built like a tank!

Thanks Juanjo. I don't mean to sound like I am giving you a hard time but I am quite interested in this lens and I would really like to see how sharp it is, wide open versus f8 (for example). If possible some 100% crops of the center and edge of the image would be great as well as use of a tripod to minimize vibration. Post only if you have the time because I know its asking for a lot of effort on your part. 3rd party primes in the 300mm range are interesting because they are generally cheaper and some can be quite good.
The reviews here are generally positive: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=173&sort=7&cat=41&page=1
One complaint is the weight of the lens. Do you think its heavy?

Both lenses are reviewed here: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html Klaus did not give the 20mm lens a good review but the Tamron is pretty good. Based upon this limited test of one lens each I would get the Tamron. I have not seen ay bad reviews of the Tamron. Here are some user reviews of the Nikkor, which are mixed: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=12

Juanjo,
Even low res and posted on the internet, these shots don't look sharp to me. You were shooting at f11 and 1/250 sec on the last pic. Why not open it up a little (ie f4) for action shots so we can see what this lens can do? After all isn't that one reason to buy an f2.8 lens?

What I find remarkable is that he does not own a pair of white socks.

I am glad you are enjoying your new lens. However, the color balance of these shots is so out of wack that it distracts from intent of your post.

James - call up Kirk enterprises and see if they can help. The 300mm f/4.5 has one of the better Nikon tripod collars. The f4 version has one of the worst - which is why they make a replacement for that lens.

I am sure that he means just what he said f4.5

look at those sites and then you make the call.

Seems like there are a lot of new people to this forum based upon the replies made to the poster. W/NW posts are traditional in the Nikon forum. They usually are a combination of a theme plus a show case what Nikon equipment can do. Its one of the nice things that sets the Nikon forum apart from the Canon forum on this site.<div></div>

Jeffrey - I think that the best advice for you would be to gain a better understanding of ISO, shutter speed and f-stop. Seriously. Nobody is going to be able to anticipate the kind of conditions that you will encounter. There is no formula for success here. It is up to you to adjust parameters correctly for the conditions that you will encounter in the field. Since this sounds like a "once in a life time" experience I would hope you have time to gain a better understanding of the basics of photography. If at no other time, then at least on the plane flight over. I am sure that there are many books at your local store which could go over the basics.
As for the TC, I would use a 1.4X with this lens.
Be sure to take enough memory cards so that you don't run out of memory for pics. Also, consider buying a backup battery(s) as well, depending on how accessible an outlet will be to recharge.
Good luck and please post some of your shots.
