It seems that I have to go for it... Thank you for this info, Erik.

"Let's keep a level head. Yes, there may be many emulsions available in super 8 film format "out there". But i will still have a very hard time should i want to get any one of them. "There" is a hard place to find... ;-) And to get it processed...?"
There are many great online shop selling S8, how much easier can it get? Some traditional shops sell S8 too, no problem if living in a "big" city. I live in a city with 550 000 people and can just take a bus and get every single Kodak S8 emulsion in an hour.
Processing is getting easier since new S8 emulsions are E6. Many labs have started processing S8. No problem there.

Erik, Thank you for your answer.
"Your question lacks some details which might be the reason that you don't get answers. I guess that you are referring to the use of an 80mm AF Xenotar 2.8 (or is it the 2.0?) with the Longar 1.4x Tele Converter?"
Oh yes, AF Xenotar 80mm 2.8 is what I have, the only AF Xenotar there is.
"When used with lenses from 80mm and up this tele converter is of exceptional good quality. It can be used without extra stopping down. Originally it was designed as an integrated lens part that optically fits right into the Schneider series 80/2.0, 180/2.8 and 300/4.0. It is optimized for use with those lenses. However, it can be succesfully used with other designs."
Rollei system lacks an AF-lens between 80 and 150 (well, 150 should come out at some point). That is why I'm interested in this tele converter. I don't want to lose autofocus and right now I feel that 150 would be too long for my hand hold stuff.
If I get it right, you Erik seem to think that this tele converter is good quality and could work nicely with AF Xenotar 80mm 2.8. That is what I wanted to know.
If someone has more specific info about this combination, I'm still very interested to hear (and see examples!)

Hi, Is someone here willing to share his/her experinces with this
combination: AF Xenotar and Rollei AF Longar 1.4? Any good?
This far I've been shooting mainly with 80mm. Right now I shoot 90%
hand held and think that 150 would be too long for me. I don't have
that steady hands!
Losing one stop is not an issue, since I don't mind a little push and
grain sometimes.
My online examples looks crappy, but you'll get the idea.
Thanks in advance for every input,
Mikko

As far as I know, Rollei belongs now to the same group of companies than Schneider. If you look at the latest Rollei lenses they are all Scheider-Kreuznach, like SuperAngulon 50mm AF and soon to be released Tele-Xenar 150mm AF. Rollei/Schneider experts can tell more details.

To my eye it looks a bit like tungsten balanced stock shot outdoors, like 320T, blue cast, flat and so on. I kinda like that kind of stuff, I should experiment more.
Just to show how very different results one can get, there is one epl cross example on my galley, the grrll portrait with perforations. I shot it as 400 ASA on a cloudy day, no flash or reflectors or anything like that.

Teppo, have you tried Dialab at Srn䩮en? I think that I have seen there some 220 films not long ago.
-
-Those are not my pictures of course. Just one example how to use WLF.
-
This summer I jumped into WLF without any experience and like it a lot. A lot of fun.

"Well save all you have last production run of the 120 was last month. all 35 mm will fe finished second 1/4 of 2006"
Larry, where did you get this information from?
I asked this question from my local Agfaphoto office and also from Mayer lab, Germany. They told me that Agfa hasn't stopped producing Scala and it is available in the future, at least 2006.
-
"I shot a roll of 120 format Scala and found the images are not very sharp and the grains are visible."
Are you sure about the processing?
My experince with Scala has been very nice: sharp and excellent detail. No problem with grain at 200.
I used Mayer Lab in Germany and they did Excellent job with Scala.
Maybe try some other lab?

There is one lab in Japan which does Kodachrome.
Lately there has been reports of KC with color shifts. KC should be very stable. I have seen stories of very old KC film which turned out just great. Is it possible that production runs are very seldom and because of that film is not as fresh as it used to be, so that the best before -date is now more important than before. This is just a guess, maybe I'm wrong.
-
What about Agfa Scala? I tried it 2 weeks ago and love the results. If I would have known it earlier I wouldn't have shot any 100G this summer... Forget E6!

"These days you can walk to any dealer anywhere and pick up whatever Hasselblad, Mamiya, Nikon, and Canon bits you need. Rollei and Leica can't possibly compete with that level of product availability no matter what they do. Direct sales may just be a good idea."
Direct sales and online are propably the way to go. When it comes to Hasselblad, Mamiya, Nikon and Canon, it depends where one lives. I live in north Europe, so for me it is mostly online anyway as shops here are selling mainly Canon, Nikon and some other DSLR plus digital P&S cameras. So, no Mamiyas here.
I have used Foto-Partner from Hamburg and this far everything has been OK. Rollei has also european www shop buyrollei.de, but it seems to be more expensive than Foto-partner.
But, if sales speeds are so low, how are they able to design new stuff?
-
Today I received my first Scalas. This is a really great film, just Super. I know, Agfa is going to stop producing this, so now is the last change to try this. Gotta buy some more Scala before they stop making it.

"With negatives, i know it's often desirable to overexpose a but, and i've heard it's the opposite with slides..is this right?"
Yes this is right, especially with Kodachrome. At least 64, I don't know 200 so well, I'm haven't finished my first roll yet.
Some expose 64 as 80 ASA, but I just underexpose according to the situation. I like underexposed stuff anyway;)
Some people think that Kodachrome is not good for people pictures, because of the skin colors, judge this for yourself.
IMO, Kodachrome produces huge deep colors that I never get when using E6 films. There are many slide films around with only subtle differences, but KC is in a category of its own, and I like that.
Funny to see K25 on Ebay... A few years old stuff which is costing more as new.

I've been shooting Super8 every now and then since 1996 or so. Now the whole S8 thing is booming, a lot of new people starting to shoot, which is funny, since "video killed S8 25 years ago".
There has never been so many film stocks for S8 than now: B&W reversals, color negatives (Kodak's latest Vision2), color reversals and new custom stocks coming out(Kodak 100D, Velvia)... After seeing that I've realised, that it will happen to traditional photography as well. Many tradiotional films will go and many labs will close, but there will be new possibilities and smaller companies offering services for those who want to use film.

Thanks for the answers.
Dan, I would like to use DR5, but I live in Europe. Later I will try DR5 also, just to see what happens... It is interesting process, but as you said, this air mail thing makes it a bit risky for me.
Richard, I was not able to open your Scala link. The "basic" address with dot com opened just fine, but /scala was too much, don't know why.
-
Finally I managed to get some Agfa Scala to experiment with. It would
be nice hear some tips and experiences from those who have used this
film, f. ex. push processing.
Lately I've been using mainly Kodak 100G and I'm starting to like it,
but want to try Scala. I also use Kodachrome 64 every now and then.
Is Scala more like 100G or KR64 to work with? If I shot Scala as
200ASA is the contrast like KR64 or 100G?
I shoot 6X6, hand held, outdoors (with fill flash) or indoors with
flash as main, people.
I know, the best way to know is to go out and shoot;)
Thanks in advance!

Yes there is K40 in 16mm.
I see that you are interested in small gauge cine formats... Have you visited www.filmshooting.com? IT IS NOT my site or anything, just very popular small gauge forum at the moment.

About the future of Lausanne lab... I shoot also S8 and there has been a lot of discussion about Kodachrome on S8 message boards. As far as I know Lausanne will stop at the end of next year (2006). Check:

Ilkka... How fun is it to wait 3 weeks... I'm ready to wait if that is the way to get great results. For me it is not very long time since the whole process (planning, traveling, shooting etc.) takes much longer. When it comes to photography I think of months and years, not days... BUT I do understand very well that in business there is no way to wait for 3 weeks or so.
Kodachrome has survived years and years without any promotion and updating... Somebody must have be shooting & loving it.

Rowland wrote: "a very small but very dedicated core group that loves the film, but most people outside this group could care less. That is the sad fact."
This is maybe the case, but how could it be otherwise since Kodak don't want to promote this film. There hasn't been ads for Kodachrome for a long time... 10-15 years... (At least I haven't seen them here in Europe). If they (K) really would like to sell this film then they should do something, not just let it go. But of course it will not happen, since they are even closing Lausanne.
About archival qualities... What about Cibachrome (Ilfochrome), have we some experince here? At least Ciba has a reputation of being very stable, but how is it in practice?

Stewe S., About K64 skin tones... I don't have a computer or scanner, I can only give you this:

Thanks for the answers. Maybe I should have been a bit more specific: I'm not trying to replace Kodachrome, just trying to find alternatives to new Ekta 100 stocks.
DR5 Slides Awesome!

DRWOOD,
What about sending from abroad? Have you experience with clients from Europe? I'm interested in your process, but sending films from north Europe sounds a bit risky when it comes to x-rays etc. Anyway, I will try this later. How is it with S8? What to expect when processing Plus-X 8mm in DR5?
