Lester Wareham

Have you tried using someone else's 7D, lemons do happen in all products but you should revew all these points first.

That's probably the first thing I'll do this week...

    Don Baccus

sticking a loupe on both prints, and complaining that the larger print looks less sharp when studied under a friggin' microscope.

Dear Don but noise is visible in small sizes too... it just doesn't look clean... and getting rid of that noise takes extra time... which in turn makes me right at least in one thing I mentioned before: it needs more processing than my 30D...

Hence, I wouldn't expect 7D şmage quality to be superior to 5Ds'... That's also obvious in review sites like dp review... there you can compare the raw image quality notes and 7D raw quality mentioned to be about 15-20% lower than 5Ds'... So there's no use to force 7D to be like 5D... Am I thinking wrong?

I am not so sure that 'h-ting' anything (or anybody) is a good position in which to be.

No one would be happy of hating something and no one hates something just randomly and willingly... There's always a reason... and whatever that thing is (good or bad), it is interpreted by the mind as a bad thing which provokes feeling of annoyance and 'hate'... And there's a thin line btw love and hate... :) I hoped to love 7D but it didn't like me and my love turned into hate... yet because of ''passion''...

  2.
Thank you very much for opinions... I appreciate them all.. Couldn't open the page for unknown reasons...
Dick Arnold. Thank you very much for advise... I'll try to stay at the right side and over 1/200 for lesser noise. But also worried about wide open aperture in interior shooting at lower iso levels... which in return may also lead to noisier photos...
Dear David I really appreciate your reply but when you say

If it worried me, then I'd Mask the sky and apply luminescence only there

that means extra processing and slowly getting away from natural appearance... But in terms of+1 I'll try to stay at the right side of histogram...
So many positive experiences can't be a lie of course... So i'll try to understand how to use 7D... And the theory of hand shake reflected on a larger sensor may lead to a blurred unfocused appearance worth of considering... I'll check that too...

Here's a shot that I took this morning with my 7D and excellent 70-200mm f/4L IS:

Dear David, did you notice that the sky is grainy in that photo? might be due to higher iso but still it is... or am I really nitpicking here?

Kamran, I'm curious...is the noise you are experiencing present in the sky from the moment you open the RAW file, or does it become apparent after you start processing the image? What is the lowest iso you've observed it with? How much USM are you applying, how much are you adjusting the exposure/shadows/highlights, and how much are you adjusting the saturation? Do the unsharp images look out of focus or just unsharp?

I notice noise even at iso100 as I open the file and enlarge it to 100%... Images are sometimes out of focus even with center point focus (may be due to the handheld usage). Almost never in focus at central 9 point AF mode...

I would upload the images but I need them upload to flickr or something... I'll inform as soon as I do...

  5.

you might see if your lenses need to be adjusted using the AF micro-adjustment on the camera

well I did it for 70-200 f4 L IS... I was getting nuts (I didn't have an appropriate setting but tried each combination many times btw + and - 15... Finally it lead me to power restart... after that it was a bit better (but still no objective testing with DOF ruler)

  6.
Dear Joshua, thank you for detailed reply...
The problem starts with soft images combined with noise (especially in shadows but also very noticeable at any iso on the sky)
I basicly perform the same steps... saturation>levels>unsharp mask... but before that in order to do these steps I expect the image to be of appropriate quality (sharp up to a certain degree and clean)... When I reduce the size the unwanted effects such as noise are less obvious... but it is very difficult for me to sharpen the image for crispier results... wether it becomes not sharp enough or noise gets very obvious...
besides that the dynamic range of photos doesn't feel superior to 30D...

  7.
Thank you for your replies... even being sarcastic :)
Dear John, it's really tragic for me... I mean it... I work from 7:30 to 18:00 everyday and 15 days each month I'm on duty at night... I haven't been on a holiday since 18 months... I've been preparing for this trip for 2 months... bought new bag, new filters, new extra battery etc... During 7 days of my trip I slept only 5 hrs and was on my feet for at least 15 hrs a day... I climbed on hills, stayed late outside in the chill... yes it is tragic that I sacrificed for disappointing images...

  8.
Yep.. Here comes another 7D hater... I own this camera for 3 weeks and and my last word is I'm disappointed and I hate it... I just can't rely on it anymore...
I used 30D for 7 years... yes limited capability and many shortcomings... I thought that in 5 years (release of 7D) there must have been serious improvements in image quality... I don't do large prints yet I don't see large images in photography sites... but even in small images 5D image quality looked stunning (probably because been taken and processed by experienced and pro photographers).. I have a friend who owns 7D for 2 years now and he loves it very much... I used the camera for 1 day with 15-85 lens on it... images seemed to lack in contrast and sharpness... I blamed my lack of experience with 7D and mediocre quality lens... I respected the opinions from the big reviewers and experienced photographers' recommendations and got one... and classic story begins with soft images, focusing problems and annoying high noise levels...
Yes it is possible to get good results with this camera too but it requires 3 times more effort, work and time to make it close to my photos taken with 30D. Center weighed auto focusing was much better on my 30D... the easiest and the most obvious proof is that photos taken with my 70-200 f4 L IS (the king of sharpness) are not sharp anymore... Noise at iso 100 is worse than in 30D... 9 point automatic af never focuses correctly.. absolutely never!...
I took 7D to my central europe trip for 10 days... display showed cool pictures which made me very happy at first but when I uploaded to computer I faced the reality... pictures made me work too long in photoshop... still couldn't get as crisp images as with my 30D...
In the end what we like about the pictures are their quality which is determined by two factors: sensor and lens... I can't doubt my 70-200 as it proved itself since many years ago... I believe that in so many years of technological improvements and innovations it is not acceptable to have a ''capable'' camera with worser (despite being larger-18mp vs 8mp) image output...
I probably wouldn't buy this camera if my 30D didn't die (after 2 times mirror and 2 times shutter repairs)...
I wanted to upgrade to 5D mark II or III but now I'm preoccupied with thought: what if I don't like these too if they are not much better than 7D. Tests and reviews show that they are actually good cameras but from now on I can't trust the reviewers too... In the end I need a canon camera for my canon lens lineup but very I became pessimistic and worried about canon cameras...

  9.
Hi..
I previously used Delsey ocd 51 model and was happy with the versatility despite the relative poor stitch quality. Shoulder strap attachments were painful with full bag and stitches torn away very quickly. The laptop compartment was at the front pocket and barely fitted 13 inch macbook when the bag was full which as a consequence blew out the front zipper 3 times in 2 years. Hence the heaviness with laptop at the front compartment led to weight imbalance and shoulder discomfort.
But otherwise some specs like tripod belt (like in most of all other bags which I never used because of the weight imbalance too), versatile compartment design with rubber support straps, soft texture, durable material, rain cover, concealable belt straps, nice and solid design and most of all the side guards (when the bag opens they potentially prevent the stuff to fall out of the bag) were the positive sides.

After 5 years of intense usage I decided to replace it with something more professional and comfortable. I bought lowepro pro runner 350 aw. I will give my verdict as soon as I start to us it in my Europe trip for 14 days. But unfortunately my first impressions are below my expectations.
Computer compartment at the back and soft padded shoulder straps are the advantages for me but the volume and interior versatility is not as good as I had in Delsey ocd 51. None of the other camera bags but delsey has a side guarsd fabric to protect the stuff from falling out of the camera which also makes it possible to use the bag in upright position which I found very useful. No such versatility in lowepro bags. I tried to hide the waist belts back into the pockets but it's so difficult to stuff it back in and also it caused a bulge at the lumbar part.
I have plenty accessories such as flash, wired remote control, about 20 filters including the cokin system and an electric sensor cleaning tool. Also I purchased a new 7D as an upgrade to 30D. The lenses I use 70-200 f4 L IS, Canon 10-22, Sigma 18-50 f 2.8 EX DC Macro, Canon 50mm f1.8 II.
My bag is full even without fitting the 30D and half of my filters.
Yes probably I need a bigger bag but 350 AW is not as much an upgrade as I thought. I would go with Delsey OCD 53 but despite the computer compartment located at the back the shoulder straps and low quality stitches and zippers are an invitation to a disaster.
Some Fancier bag models have quick access pocket which may also be of use but still most have computer compartment at the front.
Kata's probably are the best but very expensive.
Lowepro Vertex models are expensive and the computer compartment is at the front too.
Tamrac expedition models are also expensive.
Is there even a bag with:
1- Adjustable and comfortable shoulder straps
2- Side guards, upright usage compatible
3- Quick access pocket
4- Computer compartment located at the back
5- Extra soft pockets for ring and 4x6 glass filters
6- Enough space to carry two bodies with all of the accessories listed above
7- Not necessarily cheap but an acceptable price even high...

Does such a bag exist?

  10.
Thank you Edward...
I guess side handle exists be in Pro Runner 450 aw series not 350... size difference is nearly huge...
Some people in previous reviews and one of my friends had broken zipper with Computrekker... It wasn't YKK at that time, only water resistant side pocket for computer was YKK... but all of the zippers in Pro Runner series is YKK...

  11.
Hi everybody..

I need to replace my worn out Delsey ocd 51.. I was happy with it's versatility and unhappy with it's built quality. I liked the side guards of the main compartment very much and think they were really useful. But most of the other users didn't like that addition. Shoulder straps and front zipper worn out very quickly. Front pocket for 13inch computer was not versatile because of the inappropriate weight distribution and tight zipping. Shoulder straps were very painful and not very comfortable despite the velcro.

I thought of Computrekker aw PLUS and Pro Runner 350 AW.

Computrekker despite the 2.7kg looks more versatile and strong, as the side belts low enough to make the main compartment accessible whereas prorunner's belts are high which potentially may compromise easy access to the main compartment at least to the camera. Also Computrekker has a shoulder strap adjustment belt whereas Pro runner doesn't have. I wonder if that extra strap is very useful as it is also available in Lowepro's high grade Vertex models.

Would you advise one instead of other? Why? Any other suggestions?

PS: Prices here in Turkey higher that in USA. 155 USD for Computrekker 170USD for Pro runner

Thank you very much in advance...

  12.
thank you very much for contributions...

So the 7D's images were a let down, and were worse than your 30Ds? or just different?
The question that hasn't yet been asked is, where is your 30D not performing that you feel the need for an upgrade? The features you are seeking will allow people to provide more input as to which camera may be better for your needs.

I might be a rough user so that my 30D is going to service for the 4th time (3 times because of shutter one time because of the mirror issue) (error 99)...

I assume you're aware the 10-22 and 18-50 won't work with full frame, so you'll need to factor in the cost of replacing those lenses if you go the 5D route.

Sure I am, that's why I'm desperate and looking for the best solution... If I can't carry that much of burden (switching to full frame and all of it's sequel) I won't dare to go for 5d's...

So the 7D's images were a let down, and were worse than your 30Ds? or just different?

I believe most of the upgrades with a better IQ but not necessarily a bigger sensor would do better than my 30D. The problem is I might be preoccupied with a thought that if 7D is one of the most recommended cameras on the market then it should have been yielding better results than I had. May be it's just I'm not used to it.
As said:

There's a thread on fredmiranda.com entitled, "How noisy is your 7D?" that showcases some mighty impressive results from the 7D shot at ISO6400 and 12800.

I feel that the choice regarding the 5d mk ii or iii is something comparable to choice btw 20D and 30D. 7D would be 350D in that case :)
5D ii or 7D seems more logical than 5D iii in my case but I still feel that I'll not be fully stasified if I don't have it. I just want to be happy with my upgrade. Once upon a time one of my friends asked me wether to by a new 350D or a used one. My answer was you'll save good money if you go with the used one but I believe if you get a new one you'll probably shoot with more enthusiasm that might be reflected to your photographic results... I believe as photographers you would understand that psychology. :)

  13.
Hello my equipment is as follows:
30D body
70-200 f4 L IS
10-22
sigma 18-50 ex dc macro
I plan to upgrade to something close to semi-pro or pro level... I can't decide wether to go with 7d and spare some money for a better all around lens or go with 5d mk iii with or without 24-105...
I used 7d but somehow I didn't like the output... As I didn't use fullframe yet I just can speculate that the 5d mk iii would yield a noticeably better result...
For me picture quality comes before the price however I don't want to spend money to something that I wouldn't use much...
I can present myself as a universal photographer but when I check my portfolio I can see that vast majority of photos are still... landscapes, travel photos, some portraits and some macros...
Should I go with the best picture output of 5d or spare some money with 7d? Will there be a huge difference in output quality besides the full frame difference?

  14.
Thank you very much everybody...
I have to mention that my friend is a beginner and she doesn't have any idea about equipment... she is just very very ambitious and seeks very good outputs in the future... and she has a capacity too...
There are many choices of course... But I know that 17-40 is a nice lens... and I personally pend to buy one... however I can't see any opinions about it despite being a wide angle L for a reasonable price, much cheaper than 17-55 L... I've seen many beautiful photos taken with it...
also if to speak about macro I can't think of anything other than 100mm f2.8... may be because I know nothing about 60mm macro's performance... I'd appreciate any views...

  15.
Hello friends...
I intend to buy a 7D for my friend and I need very good lenses for macro, portraits, landscapes and a primary lens...
I have those in my mind: 100mm f2.8 non IS non L model both for macro and portraits and 17-40 L as a primary lens and for landscapes...
I also use 70-200 f4 L IS and I'm very very happy with it... But I'm not sure if it suits those two previously mentioned lenses...
I would appreciate any thoughts or alternative advices...
Thank you in advance...

  16.
Hello I am a canon user. I have good old EOS 30D but I'll probably upgrade it to either 7D or 5DmkII next year. And my close friend intend to get Nikon d90.
He has 2000USD for body and lens and he'll collect some more for the housing.
There are so many products with various prices on the market regarding the underwater photography. I couldn't suggest any better camera or related housing for him. And truly I have no clue too, which should I prefer if I go for underwater photography.
For example what lenses are more suitable for underwater photo?.. Zoom or prime?.. Focal length?.. Other specs?..
Should both of us go with something special? For example 7D+24-105+Sea and Sea? Or may be it doesn't matter which camera we got, just lens, housing and flash?
My only rationale is that having HD video capability in the cam would be beneficial for underwater videos.
Any comments, suggestions, advises are very much appreciated...
Thank you in advance...
PS: Is there any specific 'up to date' book I could use?

  17.
Hello dear friends... Thank you very much for responses... They all are valuable...
From this I understood that I wasn't wrong on my advises... But the most reasonable for my friend was Brett's advice...
He will have extra 1500USD for the next camera or equipment choice...
May be there will be 6D in the future?! :)
Thanks again...

kindest regards...
