1.
".... Is it worth the $2500 extra for the mem card redundancy, speed, video, and sensitivity?"
I guess you didn't mention the AF. I believe that 1d4 offers the best AF system Canon may offer. I do have 5d2 and 1d3. I am in love with pictures produced by 5d2, this is something I wouldn't ever get out of 1d3 using the same lens. The picture is different. But I hate to miss shots with 5d2 - there are two things that makes me crazy - AF (all about AF on 5d2, after using 1d for more then 2 years) and shutter lag. I'd say there is no shutter lag in 1D3 and I'm sure the same thing for 1d4. You get what you see with 1d. With 5d2 it would be just about the same BUT plus 0.X-up-to-1 sec for AF and plus 0.X sec for shutter lag.
I'm using 5d2 for portraits and formals and 1d3 for PJ work.

 2.
Hi Richard,
I use 24/f1.4, 35/f1.4, 85/f1.8. The only zoom I have it's 16-35/f2.8. I also have two bodies - one of them if full frame, other is x1.3 crop. It means that I have two "focal length" for each prime depending of the body it attached I find it very useful. http://blog.sergeyusik.com/2009/10/blog-post_10.html it's all primes here - maybe few 16-35.
I'm keep thinking about 70-200 but I'd rather get 85mm/1.2L
Using primes means you have to zoom with your legs a lot :)
Regards,
Sergey

 3.
There was a seminar of Joe Bussink here in Kiev, Ukraine - he mentioned that one of his camera (out of four) is filled with 35mm IR film and gives great portrait work together with canon 85mm f/1.2L. The rest of the cameras are 5d2 and still two 1V (still films, BW).
I do have Pentax 645N with FA 150mm f/2.8 and 75mm f/2.8 LS and use this kit when it calls for it, some special projects, pre-wedding photosession, or when the film is requested.
 4.
I had HSM version of this lens. There is nothing good learning from photos that sharpness is different from edge to edge sure if there is one. AF is unreliable if you are going to make living with this lens.
Seems like the seller has no hope to sell it asking that much for the like-new product.
if you have a crop camera 1.6 and you're low budget - go for tamron 17-50 f/2.8 - lens for the price.

 5.
1Ds3 with 16-35/2.8L + 85/1.2L + 24/1.4L
1D3 with 35/1.4L + 70-200/2.8 IS + 85/1.8 (just love this lens 3 times faster AF then 1.2L)
5D2 + 24-70/2.8L + 135/2L
100 macro, 15 fish
2x580 + 430 + ST-E2 + Pocket wizards (Tr + Rx) + up to 2 stands + 2 umbrellas
numbers of CF and SD cards :)
just enough

I've been using 1d for almost two years 1d2 and 1d3, I've sold 1d2 and get 5d2 few weeks ago - The AF of 1d and 5d2 couldn't be compared in any possible ways. It's hard to get used to this "say please" focus system of the 5d2 after using 1D for awhile.

 6.
Jon maybe you're right. I hadn't chance to try 5D2 yet. But I did play with 5D1 and I did compared to my 1D2 - I'm might feel that because I so much get used to speed of 1D (AF, ability to make second shoot right away almost like point_and_shoot camera as it should be, and etc). Probably those two things (5D and 1D) shouldn't be compared in anyway. it's two different products.

 7.
Jon Rennie, I'd add the 1D has no shutter lag comparing to 5D if we are talking about PJ style of shooting. It is hard to miss some actions with 1D3 - it's too quick.

John Dawson, WAIT for 1D4, hope Canon will solve all known issues of 1D3 :) Till that time - 5D2 is the way to go :)

 8.
Here is the question - Macro Lens or Extension Tubeset? I do have Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro and I take about 20 shots with this lens out of my wedding workflow. its rings and maybe some portraits. It's longest lens I've got - sometimes I use it just reach the subject. Does anybody of you use Extension Tubeset instead of using Macro lens?

 9.
Pay attention to Canon 35mm f/2.0 It doesn't have USM but has much better edge-to-edge performance than Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM at wide open. There is also Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM DC - very good at the center but poor edges wide open and has .... weird background blur at the edges, especial rounded highlight sources becomes sort of boomerangs. Once you'll switch to FF Sigma DC won't fits the camera. I've made practically the same way to 24mmL and 35mmL, and my choice was Sigma :) Wish you to reach "L" soon.

 10.
Betty, renting the 70-200 f/2.8 VR is the way to go. I guess, 85mm f/1.8 might do the job also, but since you're not allowed to move around 70-200 will give you more versatility I use Canon primes all the time and it's fast enough to keep me out of using flash at all in situation like you mentioned, I can go up to iso 3200 with my 1d3 if the light situation calls for it, and shooting raw gives me best results. Sure, exceptions always exists:) Good luck
