  1. Hi guys

Just wondering if anybody knows if there are sound dampening devices for the canon 5D as I have been

offered a very interesting contract as set photographer on a rather large production. Thing is its got sound

and therefore my 5D has to be as quite as a mouse. Any cues?

    thanks

  2. Hi

I have been offered a one year old kit for a now defunkt project

that has presumably only been used 5 times.

    Here it is

2 Force ten Speedotron 1000W monolights

    1 Grid

    1 chimera Softbox

    1 Speed ring

    1 Umbrella

    1 Snoot

    1 reflector

1 manfroto stand (can be used as boom)

    1 Barn Door

    Sync cables

    2 Carrying cases

All for $2200 (Canadian in Canada)

Now is this a good deal or should I bargain down? The guy said he

spent nearly 4 grand on the kit.

Thanks in advance for the help

    Sincerely

    Shayne

  3. Hi

I shot the cover of a small indy fashion mag and the editor in chief

had very specific guidelines as to what she wanted. Unfortunately one

was that the picture be shot in a very narrow halway with space for

one acute 300W with a small chimera directly in front of her and one

330W w/ a chimera directly in back of her. The photo came out looking

really bland and boring (the editor liked the shot, bland and boring

was what she was looking for supposedly)but now I have to deal with

this being on the cover of a magazine!!! The picture has no contrast,

no dynamics, its just falt and boring. How could I have achieved a

more contrasted look? Light falling on her, with a slightly under

exposed background (1.5 stops down). Should snooted light have been be

used in this situation? Please offer any words of wisdom, photos to

back up would also be appreciated. Thanks, Shayne.

I included a shot that didn't make the cover (I don't have it, the

editor does) but this will give you a good idea.

  4. I will be using a Canon 20D (can't afford the MkII) with a canon 24-70 L series and possibly a 50mm prime. I will be shooting as low ISO as possible (100-200). Shooting Studio with female models wearing a pretty wide array of clothing, ranging from drab to colorful.

Once again, my problem (although I have not experimented enough yet do to lack of rental funds) is controling strobe lights in small areas. Is this because I am not using softboxes of light modifiers? This is why I want to try using keno. I Feel as though I will have an easier time controling the light seeing as it is constantly on. Am I wrong? The problem is that I have been going about it trial and error as opposed to using precise calculations, why? Because I don't know what they are. If there is a section about this already in archives please let me know.

    Thanks again

  5. Hi Guys

I was wondering what the main differences between Keno Lighting and

Strobe lighting is. Where should I use one or the other. What is

better for shooting models with makeup ETC...

I find that shooting with strobe (IE: Prophoto or Bowens) is very

harsh in small areas and I find I have a harder time controling it.

I have never used keno but I am strongly considering using it.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Shayne

  6. Hi Guys

I am renting a bowens kit this weekend and want to know how to modulate the

modeling light. Should I keep the intesity the same as the strobe? For

    example:

    Strobe=full power -> Modeling= Full power

    Strobe=Half Power -> Modeling=Half Power

And so on and so forth...

    Yes?

    Ok Thanks

    Shayne

  7. Hi Guys

What does the modeling light (on let's say a bowens strobe) do? What is it's

purpose? Does it shut off during the flash burst? Does it stay on? Could I get

some info on the purpose, use and other pertinent info of the modeling light

    please. Thanks.

  8. Hi Guys

I did a Job for a bartending school in Montreal. This job was for

the website (and owner) of the school. It was shot during the

graduating party where the students showcase themselves. I have

really good shots of the students and I feel that they will be

asking for copies. Now My question is what measures should I take

when performing the transaction (IE: handing the cd with pics for

money) with the owner to prevent him from just handing free copies

to the students. Should I have him sign something saying that I

still own the rights to the photos? Is that too much asked? Please

help me with this issue. Thanks

    One last Question.

I Produced roughly 150 quality pictures. It took me about 4 hours to

shoot them. I then spent about 2 hours doing minor colour correction

and cropping. I charged $180 for the whole package. Is that a decent

price for an aspiring pro photographer?

    Thanks a lot

  9. Thanks Guys

How do I get my 20D to sync on the second curtain. I have been trying to do that because I love the feel of the motion with the flash. But the Only way I have found to do this is to have my subject perform their motion backwards (haha).

Ok Please let me know. Thanks for all the info guys

    Take care

  10. Hi Guys

I am renting a Canon Speedlite 550 flash this thursday to shoot a

bar party. I was told by the rentor that If I put it on "Fill" I

will basically iluminate my room just a bit, thus consreving my

natural non-flash feel. What I want is to be able to shoot over

1/100 of a second because I want crisp shots. I have shot at this

bar before and had to shoot at ISO 1600 with my 20D at 1/30s wide

open. The result was less than crisp shots with a lot of noise. Will

the flash set to "fill" alow me to shoot over 1/100 at a lower than

800 ISO? If not Does anybody have suggestions with the speedlite

    550. Thanks

  12. Hi

I have been craving a good wide angle lens for my 20D for a few

weeks now. I am looking for something that would be equivalent to 20-

    28mm in 35mm format but for my 1.6 croped 20D. I think my 28-80

(tamron) is a tad too subjective. ANyway I have been looking at

Tamron and Canon and find myself looking at 1300 us dollar + lenses.

What do you guys recomend? I don't want to sacrifice image quality

(I am very pleased with my Tamron DI) but unfortunately, I can't

afford a 1300 dollar lens. Are there any good compromises on the

market right now? Used or new? Thanks for the help.

  13. Hi Guys

    I just want to know,

To what extent is the 20D weatherproof? I have been walking around

with mine around my neck ever since I got it. I live in Montr衬

Quebec where the weather changes ever ten minutes. Is it foolish of

me to walk around with it in a light rain or snow? The Back of the

camera sometimes acumulates a bit of snow or a bit of moisutre I

always wipe it off but I am still unsure as to weather this is

completely stupid of me or slightly acceptable. Thanks for the

    response.
