yes the custom function 3 is set to '0' (Auto) and the speed changes to double of whatever it is when the flash is off. say if it was 1/60 it will become 1/125, and one more thing i noticed just now is that it only happens in Av mode when the metering is set to evaluative and this phenomenon disappears if I set the metering to partial of center weighted. I never noticed it before. to me it looks like a new behavior. i dont know if anyone else can check it on their camera. I will rush to best buy again before the close tonight and check it to see if the display cameras have this behavior when the metering mode is changed in AV mode.

I think I should clarify my question a little bit. I noticed this problem when I started using the ste2 but now even when I am not using the ST-E2 and still use the camera in Av mode the shutter speed doubles when I open the camera's own built in flash and slows down when I push the flash down. This is surprising behavior by the camera. I just went to best buy and tried a 40D and an XT and XTi and in all of them the shutter speed stays constant whether flash is open or not, but in my camera shutter speed is different when flash is on and when it is closed.
Any thoughts are welcome.
ps. this behavior became apparent after I just bought and started using 17-55/2.8IS and bought ste2 with two 580exII(Kit from Adorama). I dont know if the new lens or the new STE2 caused a problem in the camera.by the way adorama's kit says it is USA warranty but the ste2 box has manual in japanese only and no english manual, and its warranty card says international warranty. the flashes have usa warranties though. you can check the link http://www.adorama.com/CA580EX2UK.html?searchinfo=st-e2&item_no=2

I am confused. I would like some help. I recently purchased an st-e2
transmitter and when it is on the hot shoe and is turned on the camera changes
the shutter speed. Remember the camera is in AV Mode(aperture priority) and as
far as I know whether flash is on or not the shutter speed does not change in
the aperture priority mode whether flash is on or off. So for example just now
i took a picture with ste2 off and I had 2.8 with 1/60 and when i turn it on
the seeting gets changed to 2.8 and 1/125. and it underexposes the picture.
The camera seetings exposure and flash compensation are 0.
I will appreciate the help. Is it a fault in the camera or the st-e2. should i
return it.

Hi I have a quick question for anyone or if Mr. Atkins have any info on that.
I was trying to buy the 17-55/2.8 IS through amazon as recommended by Bob due
to their good return policy and free shipping. But I can not find it on amazon
as being sold directly by amazon. Do they still carry it? or if they do then
does anyone know if it is out of stock and if anyone else checked about the
availability time etc?
Any answers will be appreciated especilly from Bob Atkins as he may know more
about it.
Thanks

Hi I usually post at EOS forum. This my first time here in this forum. I am
planning to buy a digital point and shoot. I would like to get opinions from
experts on this forum about what would be the best digital point and shoot
camera under or around $ 200. Keeping in mind all the pros and cons but Image
quality being an important factor. I have looked around on web, in local shops,
e.g. best buy and sams club etc and these are so many different cameras that I
am really confused. I will appreciate the help.
Thanks

Is this an EOS question. If yes then could you tell us which flash are we talking about. 430EX or 580EX.!
-
If you cant afford 30D then we get some idea about your budget. I guess the best option for you would be 50/1.8 you cant find a better lens under 100 dollars. Zoom with your feet.
If you want to build a system and stay with XTi and dont plan a full frame the save money for the following
17-55/2.8IS
700-200/2.8IS
and you will be done.

I have purchased some equipment from Beach ( 20D, Rebel Xt, 70-200/2.8) all of which I bought to sell on ebay after getting the rebates last year. I think they are good as long as you are not planning to return the items as they have a restocking fee. But B&H doesnt have a restocking fee. So either pay the restocking fee or keep the item or exchange it, but no free returns if you change your mind with beach camera. Being an orthopedic surgeon you know that like universal precations apply to the O.R. it also applies to buying equipments as all deal are not legit.

Thanks for the replies. I do understand that few particles dont make too big of a difference on the picture quality, but my concern was that I did not expect this to happen if I send lens for the focus adjustment. I live near Canon service center Chicago which doesnt handle these things. I will call the center next week but I wanted to get information from the forum regarding if anyone knows if they open the lens for focus adjustment etc. As I have sent my 50mm/1.4 lens for calibration in the past but it came back clean and fixed.
I can post some pictures of the lens, as far as pictures taken by the lens are concerned, they are fine but my concern was that it is an unexpected consequence of Canon Service.
Probably not a big deal for the lens performance but will affect the resale value if I need to sell it. (As due to buying 70-200IS lens I have not used it too often.)

I posted this question earlier but didnt get any reply. I will
rephrase the question. Will appreciate any help from the members on
the forum
I sent my 85mm/1.8 lens to New Jersey center for focus adjustment. It
came back with focus problem adjusted. However I noticed quite a few
dust spots inside the lens. It was Absolutely CLEAN when I sent it.
Few spots are on the inside of front element and few are on the piece
of glass inside the lens which rotates during focusing. It is quite
disturbing to me as these are all new.
My question is that does anyone know if the focus
adjustment/calibration involves opening the lens or what actually is
the procedure?
As I am surprised how did so many dust particles get in there.(one
particle looks like it is a fibre or lint)
ps. My lens is New and only used three times, however it was bought
last year so warranty just expired few days after I sent it for focus
adjustment(which was done while warranty was still valid)
Will appreciate any replies. Thanks

70-200mm/4L and crop. later use it for other puposes too.
It is the best lens you can get around 500-600 dollars

"Anyone ever have a close enounter with evil minded individuals?"
I think telephoto is not suitable for close encounters. A macro lens will probably be more appropriate.
Anyway, RELAX and the enjoy your telephoto lens.

Bob you may be right. I called the Canon customer service number this morning and they asked me if I am closer to New Jersey or California and didnt mention anything about the chicago. But then later tonight I entered the info on the website with lens serial number to get a repair tracking number and at the final page it said that I have three options to send it to. NJ, CA or IL. Anyway, I think I should call the Chicago Service center on Monday as it gave the Chicago center's phone number as well. and ask them if they accept these repairs.
ps. Is 50/1.4 considered a professional lens by Canon?
-
I was about to send my 50/1.4 as I have noticed it front focuses and
confirmed it with trying it both on Rebel Xt and a 20D body. Anyhow,
I entered repair request through the canon website and it finally
gave me three options for places to send it to. Out of these I have
heard about the New Jersey and Irvine, CA site but the third site is
as follows.
Canon Midwest service center
1440 Chase Avenue ,
Elk Grove Village IL 60007
Has anyone had any experience with the repair site in Elk Grove, IL.
Since I live 2 hours from Chicago, this site is really close, but I
never read any posts mentioning this repair site. I was wondering if
I should send there or send it to NJ or CA.
Will appreciate your comments thanks

Hi I just received 70-200/2.8 IS today from B&H. Did take quiet a
few pictures today, really impressive.(Picture quality is same or a
little less than my 70-200/4L but definitely IS is the big plus) Now
coming to the question
I have found the zoom ring to be pretty stiff, especially as
compared to 70-200/4 it is a big difference. My question is if it is
normal for this lens, if anyone who has both of these lenses has the
same observation. And secondly does the ring get less tight with
time/usage?
The second question is also an observation which I would like the
expert opinion on the forum. The 100/2.8Macro which I received today
too, I have found it to hunt for focus and slow to focus much more
the the otherlenses I have(85/1.8, 17-40/4, 50/1.4 and even slower
than70-200/4) Is this normal for this lens?
Will really appreciate any comments on both questions. Thanks
PS Camera is Rebel XT

With B&H exchanges you have to return it to them on your own expense but they send it back for free. So you still end up paying shipment for one side everytime you exchange it. I dont know about other sellers as I never bought anything from any other camera sellers.
Now coming back to the filter I would like to get more input if this is normal for these filters or not. As my 77mm filter which is also Hoya SuperHMC doesnt have this.
-
I have bought Hoya Super HMC UV filters for my 17-40/4L and 70-
200/4L lenses. The 77mm for 17-40 was fine but the 67mm had the
metallic rim that supports the filter glass from the inside was bent
quits a bit. to the extent that it was even protruding beyond the
rim edge so I sent it back to B&H, they gladly exchanged it and sent
me a replacement which I received today. Surprisingly the new filter
has the same problem but not as bad as the previous one. I dont know
if this is known deformity for the Hoya superHMC filters. I am
posting a picture of the defect too so that you can get the idea. I
wanted to get the expert opinion on the forum. Since I am on my 2nd
filter and I have to pay the shipment everytime I send it back and I
have already paid the shipment for this twice , once for the actual
purchase and then one for the exchange to send it to B&H.
Please help
thanks
ps. I know this is not an EOS question but probably related to EOS
lens. I dint know which forum to put it in. Pardon my ignorance.
-
I have the following lenses and I have found them in the following order for the image quality, sharpness contrast color etc (on Elan7 300D and now on RebelXT)
70-200/4 Best
50/1.4 and 85/1.8 equally good but 70-200 a little better
17-40/4L comes the last though I have only had it for few days as I bought it with RebelXT.
so go for 70-200/4 wont regret it
-
thanks you all. Please pardon my ignorance but if anyone could recommend an optical slave, which one should I get, as Mark mentioned 'Digital". Where can I get this. Any links or any good brand Thanks again
17-55 availability
in Canon EOS Mount
Posted
It looks like that the famous 17-55/2.8 IS has been out of stock at B&H and
adorama. Its price was $929 with rebate and apparently the rebate program was
extended to 2/17/08. Does anyone happen to know on the forum about the
expected availability date on the lens at BH or adorama. On the websites it
doesnt give any estimates. Although the rebate period was extended but amazon
has increased the price back up which is kind of strange. I dont know if
anyone has any info regarding the availability at above dealers.
Any responses with be appreciated as always.
thanks
