Now that digital cameras are getting so cheap and ubiquitous, why
isn't there an "old-SLR" compatible model with a sort of Adaptall-like
system to take Canon FD, Olympus, Minolta, etc. lenses? Seems like
someone could make a killing with such a camera as it gives tens of
thousands of expensive lenses out there a new lease on life.
If this happens, of course, Canon FD prices will shoot through the
roof--think it's time to start buying up lenses?

are they "special" brownies? :)
-
I like the 85 1.8 and 1.2L. I'd recommend the 1.8 unless you really need the 1.2 as it is several hundred dollars more.
-
PS. Your photo is much better!
-
Make sure you also set your lens aperture setting to "A". If the meter's working, it will automatically set the best aperture for your situation. If you press the shutter button halfway, you have too little (low needle) or too much (high needle) light for your shutter speed and lens combination.
-
sorry Max, the AE-1 is dead as a doornail without its battery. In Canon FD your best option is the Canon F-1. (I have an extra, but I am hesitant to plug it too much outside of the classifieds :)

ack! I don't want to scan any slides! I just like popping them into my 6x6 slide viewere and when I see one I like into my Realist 620 (time to get a Rollei P11 methinks)

aw cmon Bernard, the 45mm is a specialty pancake lens which makes no pretense at optical quality. Interesting to see the Leica approaches the 50/1.8 prime though; seems like modern zooms have pretty much killed the prime advantage, to the chagrin of the purists like me (I only carry one lens with my camera, for either weight and clumsiness reasons or because it's fixed (Fuji GW690))

Boston Photo doesn't even handle film anymore. This f***ing digital "revolution" is gonna kill me.
-
thanks! I'll give Boston photo a try.

Not sure if these guys are legit but I saw this ad for PK-36 mailers
for a lot less than B+H sells them for:
-
I'm in Boston but I'm willing to mail my stuff out...
-
Is there any lab which will process my 6x6 120 slides and mount them?
(Plastic mounts OK, I'm sure nobody will do glass mounting for a
reasonable price).
-
BTW, "let them die" referred to the threads and not the posters.
-
Conventional wisdom says that Nikon is better at wide-angles and Canon is better at telephotos. I'm sure they're close enough to not really matter though. I have an old Canon FD 24/2.0 and beyond F4 on a solid tripod it's as good as anything in 35mm.

What does the general P.N community do when someone asks a question which can be answered by just Googling "Canon AE-1 manual"? Should we bother answering or just let them die so that people don't think the board is their personal Jeeves?

When I used to live in England, Jessops had a service where you could
have your prints developed and printed to 6x9 inches for very cheap,
and 8x10 for not so cheap, but still very reasonable! (40 8x10s for
something like 20 pounds which was then only about 30 dollars).
Are there any Boston-based or mail-based labs that will do the
same--run a roll of C41 and give your proofs in 8x10 format for a
non-ridiculous sum of money?

How on earth did "Fuji" get into the keyword list?
Looks like PhilG needs to brush up on his NLP :)

I've heard about people shooting B+W film from the 70's---anyone have
any success with anything older? I have a roll of Panatomic-X with a
1945 expiration date and I'm wondering whether I should bother, and if
so, how. If I can't get pictures out of it I'd rather keep it sealed
in its box as a trinket.
-
and--if you include a note they will print on 4x6 paper instead of the normal 4x5 (which they use for 6x7)
-
just talked to them--they can print 6x9
-
Dwayne's has REALLY good prices on 120/220 C41 processing and
proofing. Anyone used them? Thoughts?
I'll also call them and ask about 6x9 and post the answer here--their
price list doesn't seem to include a 6x9 price. I know a lot of people
can't machine print that format.

"Those black labs, they may be smart and all, but they're a bastard to
photograph, especially in snow. When you choose your pet, the ideal
selection would be an 18% gray dog. You could name him Zone VI."

Thanks guys! I am thinking of taking one of my 35mm slides and having it blown up onto an Enduratrans 8x10 and seeing if I like the effect.
