  1. I have a similar show happening in May at a place that is unlikely to generate sales, I am hoping it will generate service oriented business. I have just sold 12 images, (11 10 x 15 and 1 11 x 14) in 16 x 21 custom, fancy frames, archival everything. Got a good rate at $100 per frame. This was a special relationship customer. With the print, I collected $140 per. Not a great markup. I can not afford to use these frames, not by a long shot.

For May, I may buy frames and mats from http://www.framesbymail.com/custom/A-2050/Metal//White///////// or CheapFrames.com and mats from PreCutMats.com. I will not resell these frames but will reuse them in show after show. I will have a description of proper frame requirements posted from my custom framer along with prices of custom frames. This way, I will be able to sell the prints without overburdening the price up from with the framing costs.

    Hope this is helpful!

  2. I Warned You this was coming.

I have my new 758. Set at cable flash, 1 profoto compact 600 in a softbox, 8

    ft away. Dome extended.

Took a reading, dome pointed at source - got f90. of course that does not seem

    right to me.

I believe I have the meter set to incident, bit the meter thinks it is

reflected (when turned towards subject reading was close).

made the decision to use the single light source for the portraits and set the

camera based on histogram and image. Photos came out fine.

    (www.seawolff.com/photo/ LeTip link on bottom).

Read the manual, could not find a setting to flip meter to incident for the

flash. Sure I jest missed it.

Can anyone give me a clue?

    Appreciate it.

Same recent background as you. My rate is $150 an hour for my time. I do include 1 8x10 unit per hour. Doesn't matter what I am doing photographically. In my computer consulting business the rate can fluctuate from $150 - $200. When I am as good in the whole cycle of my photography as I am with the databases, that rate will go up to match. My time is my time.

  4. "Just a thought guys....would any of you that are starting out or charging the low fee's...would you be doing so if digital was not around and you only had to use film....it's an honest question folks.

    Artur"

Arthur, you are right on the money. I was shooting 35mm weddings in the 80s and was not happy with the risk the bride and groom were at with me not knowing 100 percent what was in the camera or on film when I left the hall. I switched to landscapes and underwater. A few years ago when digital quality was there and I can test my work in progress, I decided to give it another go. First with candid kid portraits, then corporate events, and now weddings. From my first hawkeye instamatic in 67 to my A1s in 81 that I just retired, I will not accept the film risk.

However, at no time do I do a wedding on the cheap. I am almost 50, shooting a camera for 40 years, have developed excellent people skills and good photographic skills. Every year of experience is in my shot and in my bill, with the exception of special circumstances.

  5. Hi All,

I am doing a presentation at a Professional Photographer's Association dinner

and would like to know which of these you like more than the others. There is

a cross section of my so Street and Documentary is not the major

representation. I value any opinion you have to offer so please don't feel

limited to just the street stuff.

Please send a list of the titles you prefer to me directly at

awolff@seawolff.com so we don't clog the board with this.

    Thanks very much

  6. The owner of one of the most successful studios by me shoots 340 to 350 images per wedding. He has one of the highest final sales of images in the area. One look at an album of his and you know it was enough.

If you can show an album that covers what the B&G will want, that should be proof enough they do not need 1000 + images. However, the highest billing WPJ I know shoots a minimum of 2000 images per wedding (2 photographers).

So there are examples at both ends of the spectrum for shooting the max or just the minimum to get by.

Your work will have to sell itself.

  7. I was waiting for other, better options as I had never heard of either company.

I am just starting to shoot weddings and parties WPJ style and a) the vest don't cut it with, I concede, medium sized glass). I prefer to shoot with 1 camera although I carry a second as a back up (D2x/D70). I also shoot yacht races and waterproof has been a major concern for me. For quick lens changes I am best off having a pocket for each lens so I don't have what I consider an awkward time where I am trying to hold 2 lenses and a camera, and still have a hand for the boat.

I think the waterproof chest vest will keep my glass where I can get best access. Would also do a lovely job walking through the gates at the airport.

    Thanks!

  8. Even when charging by the hour, you agree with the client as to the number (or range) of hours you will be charging for. You are going to come up with those hours by counting the products, setups, and post production work required to deliver your images. You will have additional consideration for what your deliverables are - file for ad agency or catalogue, proof prints, etc.

At the end of the day (most days), you are charging for the total time and effort per product.

  9. Hi Valerie and welcome (I have actually only been active about 2 weeks, I think).

The Slide show took a very long time to load, longer than I generally have patience for. If that is common, you may want to have a screen that gives people something to look at and read while the show refreshes.

    Hope helpful!

  10. Just updated from nikon 18-70 and sigma 70 - 300 to 17-55 and 70-200 VR. Have

been using a lowepro backpack for carrying, but when on a shoot I typically

throw my lenses in the pockets of my photo vest. Keeps me from stopping,

    kneeling, opening etc.

My though is to keep the lens in the backpack and carry the empty case

attached the outside of the bag. When time to stroll, put it on camera or

detach the case, stuff it, and wear it with the strap.

Any suggestions on how I should do that with the big bazooka? Gotta be a

better way than what I thought of.

  11. You could start out by asking him 1 question

What can he budget for it ? Sometimes that budget is more than you would expect. No matter how much you want to charge, if it is outside his range, he will not buy it. Be sure to ask for photo credit on the album cover!

  12. If a full discussion on Iview MediaPro for PCs has been had, I missed it and

    apologize up front.

Anyone choose to use it over bridge (or is it a step before bridge)?

Does it play nicely with Nikon and Canon Raw?

Are the slide shows and web templates any good?

Does it do a great job of cataloging (sp?)?

Any one compare it to Lightbox?

I find Bridge to be pretty good but if there is a better (read that faster)

way of dealing with images I would like to know.

    Thanks

    Alex
