Dana, they are direct scans on an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner.

I take a cutting and then bring the flower to the scanner,

lay it on the glass, arrange as best possible, then do a scan,

usually at 600 to 800 ppi. That gives me lots of room to drop down

to 300ppi and, if I want, do a large print (which I'm not yet equipped to do).

I then do a little touch up and maybe sharpening in PS.

I have also started using a program called Neat Image which removes noise and, I notice with the right

settings can add a "buttery" feeling to the photo.

Give it a try. - Cheers, Irv

Thanks for the suggeston - I agree. Take a look now.

I have darken the bottom of the stem and smoothed out the flower generally.

    What do you think?

I have just discovered that this flower is a Lobelia.

    I'm learning - Irv

    Thanks for the nice comment.

I'd rather have comment on composition, design,

lighting, etc. than ratings. They make good opportunities to learn.

I have used USM in PS. I shoot in RAW and use

RawShooter (Just recently) and like its

sahrpening better. I've really just gotten into

digital with a decent camera recently and have

    a long way to go.

  1. I just downloaded a program called Net Image. I was just trying it out. The intention of the program is to smooth out noise in photos. However, I did notice, as I fooled around, that it could soften the pic. Try it, there is free version available.

Very sharp, good DOF. VEry good composition and

coloring. What lens are you using on your rebel?

You have the kind of sharpness that I want

and am not getting on my 20D with the kit lens.

I'm getting ready to purchse another

lens and trying to determine what would be the

    sharpest for somewhere around $300.

    Regards - Irv

  2. I agree that the whites are blown out. But, I do like the soft effect.

Here is the photo before processing for the soft effect.

How do the whites look in this?
