Dan, of course I want to take the advantage of D800's 36mpx sensor. But heavy F2.8 lenses are not something I need nor I would carry on a five day hike into Alps. Also, I have run a small sharpness comparison of few telephoto lenses I have and at 85mm and F8, the old Ai-s 50-135 is better than 70-200/2.8 VR I. That's why I'm looking also on old ones, because some might be really good.
