  1. I completely agree with you on the composition. If the bird were crisp, it would be absolutely perfect, but even as is, it is definately a welcome change from the badly composed, over saturated bird photos. It really shows the subject as a delicate and beautiful creature in its natural contect. Bravo! and good luck on your next outting. Sharpness is something that will come with a better oppurtunity, but a good eye is something much harder to come by - and something you definately have in your bag.
  2. maybe a problem with the quality of your lens...

ROFL. I don't mean to pick on Nathan, but I am guessing he has never experienced the joy of a holga.

It's moody quirkiness really compliments your expressive style and let all that creativity come through in a way that some pro digicam wouldn't.

The building is totally distracting to the point of ruining it. Move back, squat down. The lack of head space on the sculpture is also a little irksome. Just my humble opinion. In black & white, with more contrast and a looser crop, and no building, it could be a great shot.

I may be alone here, but the brown just makes an amazing shot look muddy, epecially the sky. That solid brown, just, yuck. I adore your other work, but I keep coming back to this one trying to give it another chance, thinking that I am just not seeing it right, but it looks brown, static, and over shapened to me.

Love the image, hate the added grain. I've always been a low speed film (low ISO digicam), fine grain developer person though, so I may just be too pickity about grain. It seems to be going over well with the rest of the gang though. Ditto on all the 'love it's
  3. I don't think this is a matter of manipulated vs. unmanipulated for me (because, well, I don't care) as much as it is a matter of a snapshot with a couple PS filters being on the TRP page. That is a joke. I am not meaning to attack the photographer/PS'er, only the pnet ratings game that holds this up as one of the best images on the site. This is not new, cutting edge, whatever - the idea comes straight out of Filter Gallery in PS, whether other work was done or not. I think I had not discovered this effect by the time I hit 14 in Paint Shop Pro 3, but I can not date it as any more current than that. I have no problem sharing pnet space with both well manipulated photos and good very maniplated photos - especially since I feel the need to airbrust a limb or add a cheesy vingette every once in a while -, but this is a badly manipulated snapshot.

Pedro, I believe that it was a good effort and you are doing well at building your skills in both photography (from your portfolio) and PS. I don't mean to attack you personally and I wouldn't if this image was being held up as some masterpiece instead of a decent image with a cheesy effect. I know that my photos are pretty midlevel as skill goes on this site, but I don't expect them to pop up on TRP. ever.

  4. Unfortunately, I have no constructive criticism to give. This image just makes me lust after quality equipment (my film work is currently done with a K1000 and cheapo Omega enlarger in a closet ? I have not had the heart to scan any of it); though rationally I know that skill and talent play an enormous part themselves. As others have said, I would die to see this as a huge print! Open, wide, and so very real. If I squint really hard, I swear I?ll be able to spot John Wayne.

I would've opted for one main subject and the rest as a nice background. As is, your eye just leads to the wall at the far end without stopping anywhere. Definately like the foreground, middle ground, background layout. Maybe nicer in color, but switching is an awful big commitment in an ol' K (and I have a collection of rolls with '4' and '15' written on their tabs to prove it). I just wish there was something interesting on the middle path.

    Moonrise

I am in love with it, but I can not figure out why. The little moon compositionally balancing out the Earth, maybe? It's not "pretty" like most landscapes - just so deeply pleasing.

    Autumn basket

It needs to be either simplier or more complex IMHO. Either concentrate on the detail of the leaves or apples (on or the other) or throw in pumpkins and such and make it more lively. The basket doesn't have enough head room. Tight on all sides is fine, but tight on some and loose on others ends up looking sloppy.
