Sounds like a battery issue. I have a straight manual FM2, but if I recall correctly, if the batts. are dead on a Nikon with AE of this vintage, it will only fire on one prescribed speed without batt. power other than bulb. I'm sure you will hear from someone that has more info. Good luck .

Not only do multiple filters degrade the image, cause the danger of vinetting but they can also introduce flare.Use as few as posible.

Are the shutter speeds accurate?? If this has had a CLA lately or the speeds are consistant, there is nothing wrong with this shutter in my opinion. Use it. Unless your're independently wealthy the conversion will reach close to 4 bills.

Should you wish to practice zone work, the over/under neg becomes the standard from which deviations are made for low and high contrastsubjects. Could you please elaborate

Sorry, didn't see Micheal's ammendment. Is your present enlarger a diffusion or condensor? If you can deal with the condensor I'd also recommend the DII if you can find one you could pick up somewhere. There are still many parts for these and they're built like a tank. Not small though.

Graflex had an accessory caled a "Graflarger" that used an Arista cold light head that fit into a graflok. You could use the view camera u have now or pick up a beater Speed Graphic w/graphlok and one of these accesorries. There was also a stand that they made that held the whole shebang. Now this wouldn't be any cheaper than a nice Omega DII but getting a DII shipped can get prohibitively expensive.

Do you wanna print with an enlarger or just develop your own film? Old enlargers are to be had for a song these days you just need to find one near your area that you can pick up. I had one shipped and it cost more than I paid for the enlarger itself.Look in your local library first to get an idea of the basics and you'll find it's neither hard nor expensive if you improvise.
