I have seen this problem with film cameras also. definetely a shutter/mirror return problem seek Doctor Canon for minor surgery!

As a lab tekkie myself. there is no reason if they use modern equipment. find a lab with a Fuji Frontier or equivalent.
most digital labs and it is only a mouse click to get true Black and White.
especially with t400cn from Kodak

Got a similar problem with the Rebel. Vivitar728 or Sunpak728 for EOS do not expose properly. These flashes apparently are not compatible. New technology demands new equipment! What I have been able to learn so far is that only EX series flashes will work with the new cameras. Aftermarket third party manufacturers don't seem to have the EX compatibility yet. Mine just plain went over exposed by many stops and nothing was able to control it.
