    your question is almost a philosophical one for me. :-)
    I definitively agree with you, that the result of usage of any tool (like any Photoshop image effect) can be just "mechanical" - if it is applied mechanically. But I think it depends on one's decision - which tool to select to achieve his/her goals. When I would talk about images, the tools could be film cameras, digital photocams, software like Painter, tablet, postprocessing software (Photoshop), brushes with akvarels or oils and many others. And it depends on our creation process to decide which tool to use and how. What do you think?
