1.
I have never been a people person so I tend to shoot anything except people, even family. I've been trying to get more pictures of my son as he grows up, but most are still on the hard drive. I've printed really good ones for his grandmothers since they complain LOUDLY if they don't get some every few months. I try to tell a story when I photograph him - what is he doing, how is he reacting to something - but I don't really instigate (except for when hubby and I let him play with the hose).
David - that shot of your daughter leaning over in the water (second one down) is awesome!

 2.
Yes, indeed, and I'm sorta surprised I haven't seen more mention of this. She really was a pioneer.

 3.
Personally, I think the super shallow DOF is not a great look. I would use f4 or f5.6. When (not if) your subject leans a little closer or back, this will help. Unless you are putting their heads into the old-style head props, they will move.

 4.
I don't use B&W because it's period-correct, I use it because I like it and can develop it myself easily.
I use 35mm (some), medium format (most of all, likely), 4x5, and crop sensor digital. I'm not getting paid to shoot 98% of the time, so it's just what I want to do. It may be a digital world, but I still prefer working in my darkroom to staring at a computer and printer that refuse to speak the same language.
Another point - I like a physical print. I've found that even I don't print as many of the good digital shots as I do the good film ones.
