Thanks db, I'm thinking of selling off the 28, I do have the option of the radio controls, but if I can use the cls, then I'm
gonna. :) I'll wait until after the flash bus tour stop in Indy in a few weeks to see if I want to get rid of it completely or
keep it in reserve.

That's what I was figuring Matt, just hoping there was something I was overlooking. Thanks...now what to do with the
28...

I have an sb28 and two sb-600's, the camera is a d-90. I'm trying to set the sb600s as slave, and the d90 as commander. Then
attach the sb28 in the hotshoe. I thought all the sb600s needed was a light to set them off. Yet, they do not fire with this set up. I
have some cactus v4 transmitters that I can use to trigger all, I'm just trying to find a way without the trigger. Is what I'm trying
impossible?
Thanks Chad

Going back to visual adjustments, I found this. Seems the most comprehensive online version I found.
Just an FYI for those looking.

So after I've given visual calibration a shot, then decide I need software assistance, what do I go with? Knowing you
often get what you pay for but not being able to break the bank, what's the best choices out there? In other words,
what kind of luck have you had?

Thanks everyone for the advice. Looks like I'm going to have to start scrounging up a few pennies then. I apprecaite everyone chiming in. I feel I have a better understanding of what I need to do now.
Thanks
I was working with the physical controls of the monitor. I thought that would give me my best results, did I think wrong?
-

I'm trying to calibrate my monitor but getting mediocre results. Buying a calibration program, at the moment is out of the question. I've been trying to use http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php as a template. My color temp choices for my monitor is 9300 k (too blue) 6500 k (default) and sRGB. since the color space on my camera is sRGB i figured this may be the best choice. I wanted 5, or 5.5 k for daylight balanced but no go.
According to http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php I should see a whole range of tones. I do see tone B as a dark grey, but Tones XYZ all show as pure white. No matter how I change brightness and contrast I do not get color in XY.
Any thoughts, clues, better calibration tools that are in my price range?
Thanks

Thanks everyone for the responses. I did notice the different number of contacts on the two batteries, but was cursious because the charger being the same. I have two 3a's already now I guess I'll have to pick up an extra 3e. thanks for the help!

I recently upgraded to a D90 from a D50. The D90 battery is a Nikon EN-EL3e Lithium-Ion battery, D50 is a Nikon EN-EL3a Lithium-Ion battery. The chargers are identical. Are the batteries compatible between models?

How do I figure magnification when I have a D50, 1.4 TC, and a micro lens 1:1?

thanks

Thanks guys, I'll load up some Loligo and start shooting. Been anxious, just not many opportunities to practice yet :)

I recently purchased my first light stand and Umbrella and have been tinkering. A question occured to me and I thought I'd ask around. Is there any general rule of thumb when pairing umbrellas and speedlights?
When to use the white satin part of the umbrella, and when to bounce light when black cover is on?
How far away to place umbrella from speedlight?
And any other tid-bits of wisdom you may have for a lighting novice.
The more rules I know, the more I know what I'm breaking ; )
thanks

I do only use 'save as' and keep originals safe and backed up. I do use the largest Jpg the camera allows. my camera is a 6 mp (nikon d50) and I understand there is a limit to the size print created. With a smaller jpg file does that shrink the maximum size a print should be?
I've been 'wanting' to switch to RAW, I just havn't taken that step yet.
Thanks for all your comments, and help.

When I first copy by jpg (normally don't shoot raw, ok, never do...my bad) the file size is anywhere between 2.2 - 3.3 meg in size, after I load into PS elements 7 and touch up, resave (10 quality) my file size is anywhere from 765kb - 1.2 meg. Is elements more efficient at compressing the file? why the difference in file size? Will it have any affect on prints?

thanks

I've done some more reading and found the V4's to be very highly recommended. I think i'm going to give them a try. Thanks all for the advice.
Kris, I'll keep the SS in mind as I work with the new gear.

I've hit the stage where I am learning about off camera lighting. The D50 does not have a commander mode, but I can set the SB600 to Slave.
I've did some searching and looking at strobist.com and came up with this:
http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11447.html
It is a Cactus V2s combo.
Price is a factor, and If I could I'd be shooting for pocket wizards or something. Those may come later.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Cactus, as Mpex does not have a user comment on this item. or what I'm attempting to do. I am not a pro, but do shoot a few photos for friends. I do want to experiment and practice with a setup similar to this, i just want to be traveling in the right direction.
I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks

Try not to set your elbows on your knees, too wobbly. Rest them instead on the meat of your thighs. that is if your crouched down.

Thanks guys, this clears some things up for me. Steven, thanks for the links, I'll be sure to check them out as well!

In the past I have attempted Macro using a teleconverter or Close-up lens. I'm now saving up for a Macro lens. I had the Nikon 105 VR in my sights, but am now thinking of getting the 85 instead. The main purpose of this lens would be macro and Portraits.
My question is, is DOF affected by the size of the lens? With all things being equal, focus distance, f-stop, will a 105 give me a greater DOF than an 85?
Thanks
i'm a teacher, 6th grade Science. Always being challenged to be creative in order to better serve. Takes about 70% of my mental capacity...leaving very little left for anything else.
I also piddle on the guitar (poorly), piano (even more poorly), and do a little woodworking.

Convience and cost for me. As a beginner, I was told over and over, 'the only way to improve is to take lots of photos.' and doing so was not cost effective. Especially since I didn't understand ISO and was wasting money on "cheap" film. Going digital was a very economic choice and has paid for itself many times over.

I'll be shooting a wedding this weekend, my 4th. I have an equipment question, I just received my sb700 in the mail and will not be
able to give it a hard test prior to the wedding. So here's my question, on camera sb 700 with the diffuser that it comes with bounced,
or sb 600 on camera with globe diffuser while the wedding is taking place? I dont wnt to have umbrellas placed around for obvious
reasons. Vie never been I this church before but it's not that old ao it should be a nice ceiling to bounce off.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom
