  1. Why do you people tell him to use it at F8 or F11? Why not tell him to sell it and get a 50/8 or 50/11 right from the start?

Kinda pointless having 1.4 if you're not allowed to use it...

  2. Also: as others here and other places have said: I photograph them, they threaten me and I leave because they want me to. What does that tell them?

That they can scare people into doing as they're told. That their tactics of intimidation work. That their terrorism makes people change.

Unfortunately for them, I've come to the conclusion that standing my legal ground was the correct thing to do. By folding into their demands I would have lost any moral ground I might have and would further strengthen those criminals. That gained strength would then be used against others and then it would snowball from there.

Calling their macho bluff and then taking a beating if necessary was my only option. I was waiting for their attack (literally waiting for it at times) only because there were several hundred police officers in the vicinity. Had there not been any police backup and had three random thugs threatened me for no real reason, I hope I would be headclear enough to defend myself first.

As it was, this being a rally in broad daylight, fully arranged with the police, I had a legal right to be there, a legal right to photograph the rally and any wrongdoing was clearly only from their side. Threatening people and their property isn't legal in Sweden.

As people in the Swedish discussion forums have said: give in to them and you're telling them they're in the right.

  3. I've been given a link to a page that has photos of me on it. It some "Indymedia" site.

The problem is that they've classified me as a right extremist, together with some bullshit lie about me having a perverse interest in photographing leftist rallies.

I'll be calling the police tomorrow. *sigh*

It's pretty impressive that they've found a long haired right extremist that speaks swedish with an accent, and all this without asking me which party I belong to.

  4. I was out photographing the several 1st of May rallies here in Sweden

yesterday, looking for interesting shots. I photographed the Leftist

party's, the Green party, etc etc.

Then I went to the Syndicalist's rally (they're superleft or

something). There were tons of police everywhere. Dogs and police vans

and everything everywhere. Not all that many people at the rally, but

I suppose those people are known for violence.

So I take a few shots from my bicycle, cycle another 20 meters in

front of the rally, take a few shots, etc. At one point this guy came

up to me. He had a shaved head, a beret, tight jeans and an

English-inspired jacket on. He asked me what/who I was photographing

for. I told him I was photographing for the sake of photographing, an

answer he wasn't satisfied with. So he continued hassling me while I

continued trying to take pictures. "You know, some people maybe don't

want to be photographed", he told me. My reply was to ask him what I

was supposed to do about that. He left me alone after that.

So I continued cycling/photographing. The shots weren't that great,

but I kept hoping something interesting would pop up.

So near an intersection I'm standing there with my bike when these

three guys (all bigger than me, of course). They tell me that they

don't like me photographing and that I should leave. They asked me if

my camera was insured and that it looks nice. After seeing that I

didn't respond to their threats they one upped themselves: they told

me to get lost, cycle as fast as I can and that they had "given me a

    warning".

I told them I wasn't going anywhere. There were police everywhere

(although I wasn't clearly visible in the street, sadly enough, being

behind a bus stop) so I wasn't too worried that they'd get violent

even though I was sure these were the kind of people that liked to

beat up neo-nazis and then boast about it on websites.

"You're not allowed to photograph us", they told me. I told them that

if I'm on public property I can photograph anything I want (except

protected military buildings). When I asked then whether they would

like to ask a policeman which of us was right, they hushed up.

They told me that I had been photographed by them and that if my

pictures were to appear, they would use the one of me. I don't what

exactly what good that would be, but I can imagine (these people like

to put the photos and addresses of neonazis up on websites...). I told

them I was fine with that and that they had the right to photograph

me. This seemed to surprize them. It's as if they regard photographing

people as some sort of privelige that only the higher echelons of

their communist society are allowed... Or something.

I then backed up and continued cycling, with them following me. I then

stopped at an intersection the police has cordoned off (for the sake

of the passing rally), and the three guys came up to me and stood in

front of me. They then repeated their threats on both my life and the

destruction of my camera. I decided I didn't want any more part in

this so I let the bike fall to the ground, backed up a few steps,

lifted my 1D2 and photographed them all at 8fps. They backed up

quickly, and it was then I saw that the one guy had take off the shade

off my 16-35 (he had had his hand on the glass earlier, but I didn't

think anything of it, stupid me. :(). I saw the shade in his hand and

told him to give it back. He continued running into the crowd, where

    he disappeared.

I found the nearest police officer and told him of the theft, but he

    said he didn't have time.

I couldn't find the thief anywhere, so I continued following the

rally, hoping I would see him. One of the three guys observed me

    constantly from a distance.

So anyway, they reach their destination, and the observer tries to

block my view which results in him getting sent to the sidewalk (off

the street) by several police officers.

Not being able to find anyone, I go to the police station where I make

a report of the theft, give them the pictures of all three

    threateners/thieves and then go home.

Those idiots cost me 50$ (hood from the 24/1.4 instead of the 16-35s

    normal hood), excluding freight.

    Now the thing is this:

    1. These people probably weren't with the syndicalists (and the

syndicalist party will probably deny that they know who these

criminals are), so they probably won't be found.

    2. The crime was committed under the noses of several police officers

    but they couldn't do anything.

    3. I feel so extremely terrible that those criminals STOLE a part of

MY camera (one could even say that it was because I was careless and

let them come too close) that... shit. I feel terrible. Haven't eaten

anything for 24 hours and barely drunk anything.

I've had the/a camera within 50feet of me since 22 feb 2002, so the

camera is my life. Kinda like my best friend. Someone taking something

from the best friend, and me LETTING them take it, makes be feel not

    at all good.

Since yesterday I've been replaying the scenario in my head again and

again and again. Going over what I did, what they said, what I should

have done, if I should have shouted to the police, etc.

I'd love to hear someone say that I did the best I could, and that

those criminals and their intimidation tactics don't work on normal

    people.

Last night I twisted and turned in bed for several hours before sleep

    finally overcame me.

There were several other photographers there. Even people with video

cameras, why did they have to attack me? What did I do?<div>00GGU9-29739784.jpg.8f8a00601412b3588f0ce0842286faef.jpg</div>

  5. I have a 350D, 1D2 and a bunch of CF cards.

The 1D2 works with all the cards (unsurprisingly). The 350D works with

    a 512mb standard sandisk, 2gb sandisk ultra 2 and 16mb Canon.

When trying to use a 1gb Sandisk Extreeeeme the 350D complains about a

"CF Error". Can't format the card or anything.

As I said, the Extreeeeeeeeeme card works in several card readers and

    the 1D2.

So anyone got any idea why the 350D doesn't like the card?

  6. I just bought me an MSI S270. It comes with an efficient AMD Turion 64bit processor, half a gig of ram (minus graphics memory), 80gig drive and DVDburner. Wireless and firewire is standard.

The monitor is a 12" widescreen capable of 1280x800.

I had an acer 5021 (or 5022?) earlier, but sold it because I found it to be too big. It had a 15.4" widescreen with the same resolution. Because both machines have the same resolution, but the S270 is 12" it appears to be ever so much sharper.

The S270 is _tiny_ compared to the big and bulky 5022. So anyways here's my advice:

    1. Size first. Always. If you're going to be carrying it around look at 12" monitors. Sure, 15" is fun to have but you're going to have a hard time finding backpacks big enough for it.

    2. The graphics card is pretty much a non-sequitor. Anything is fine. Ditto processor, although you might want an efficient Pentium Mobile / Turion instead of a Pentium 4 power hog.

    3. DVD burner, so you cans burns yer stuff. CD burners are SO 1995.

So, yeah. That's about it. As I said, I love my new S270, even though it's white and people mistake it for an ibook and therefore rip on me for it... There is a black version, though. :)

  7. > Disclaimer: I never had a Sigma lens and probably never will.

Spoken like a true scaremongerer. Try actually using the glass you diss all the time. You might even learn something... like how it's possible to get error 99's with a 70-200IS.

This isn't even a proper question. "Do I need f2.8?" and you've got your answer.

And your resale value comment... why are you buying the glass, to use it or sell it?

  8. > Why the hell would you want a B/W mode?

Now, now, Chuck. Let's keep the obsceneties to a mininum here.

The main reason for people to want b/w in the camera is that they come from the film world and thus expect to be limited by the camera. Also, being ex-film people they aren't familiar with computers and therefore fear having to sit in front of one to convert the shots to b/w.

You've got your explanation, so leave them alone.

  9. It appears as if those few extra hundred grams are the difference between life and death for some people.

At first I thought my stuff was heavy, but I got used to the weight of a 1-series body and 200IS after a while. Now anything smaller than a 1-series is "weightless".

  10. Sweet Jesus.

You're comparing an old 1D + 70-200 with a new 1D2 + 300/2.8. You realize the 300 is probably the sharpest, most contrasty glass in existence, right?

    Why not compare a 1DS2 + 24-70 with a D30+28-300/6.3 while you're at it. It's almost as fair.

Anyways, quit pixel peeping. Won't get you anywhere.

  11. I've never heard of that.

I've heard of plenty of Nikon displays getting scratched to death and some even cracked due to user abuse, but never of any Canon displays having any trouble.

It would surprize me if the Canon displays I have (10D and 1d2) were some kind of magic displays that are super-tough, because I've been doing all sorts of crazy stuff with my cameras and the displays only have light, light, light scratches you can only see at an angle.

I have a hard time believing my displays might be unique.

  12. These guys are funny. They mention that they didn't include the Sigma 12-24 because they were comparing only DX glass, directly after which they go on babbling about how useful DX glass is on FF bodies.

And these Nikonians are far from fair: They love the Nikon 12-24 in spite of the insane price for a cropped, handicapped lens and then they take a crap on the Sigma 10-22 because, you see, it's a lot slower than the N12-24 (f5.6 vs f4 - what an amazing difference!).

They also have nothing really bad to say about the N12-24 while the Sigma 10-22, which differs not at all much, gets this-lens-is-bad-if-you-Occasionally uses their DX lenses on a film body" comment. And somehow the N12-24 works great on a FF body?

    *sigh*

Let's not take these guys too seriously.

  13. We are y'all all dumping on Adobe? They're just a giant multinational company that's trying to make a few bucks.

Now don't be communists. Go buy whatever Adobe tells you to buy, whenever they tell you to buy it! Don't forget to activate your software, because otherwise you're a communist pirate! Aar, me hearties!

(I myself use Gimp which is completely free, and none of my customers have ever complained).

  14. Lambdas, lightjets, whatever.

You ass ain't getting far with a laser. I've had some of my prints printed on a 600x600 color laserjet (HP2500 and 4600) and ... well, sure: you could see what it was if you held it at arms length but it wouldn't stand up to a loupe.

Printing on a lightjet/frontier/whatever is cheaper and more durable than a laser.

Oh, if you're planning to spend about 30+k$ on a frontier (excl chemicals), please get me one too.
