  1. A speaker at a conference I attended some time ago was talking

about how new technology doesn't typically supplant old

technology, but rather takes a place in addition to the old one. A

simple-minded example: People feared that movies would

replace live performances, that TV would replace movies, but all

three now exist in parallel and all three are prospering. Perhaps

the same will apply to photography and digital imaging.

  2. Dear MF Colleagues:

My local lab just called to say they developed 4 220 rolls of Ektachrome film in the C41 rather than the E6

process. They were somewhat apologetic, explaining that a new employee misread my order. They have

offered to make digital prints of the results. These were fall color nature shots taken locally with my P67

camera using tripod, MLU, cable release: in other words, I put a lot of work into them. Now the leaves are

pretty much off the trees, so re-doing the work will have to wait a year. I am an amateur so no loss of

potential income is involved, and in any case the standard limitations on liability apply.

    So, I have some questions:

    1. Will these digital prints likely be any good?

    2. Have any of you experienced this kind of mix-up? (In 25 years of 35mm photography, I never have;

but I'm fairly new to MF work.)

    3. Would you change labs? (This lab is the only local professional lab; I used an excellent lab in

Portland, Maine before I moved to Michigan several months ago. I could sacrifice the local convenience

for a more distant lab, but mailing has its risks as well.)

Any other advice or suggestions also welcome.

    Thank you.
