1.
I have the Nikon 28mm f/1.4 as well as Canon 24mm f/1.4. The are diffrent stories.

Nikon 28mm f/1.4 has been known for its ability to catch the lowe light shap at f/1.4 some photographer sadi " this animal has been created to live at night" and this is why I bought it and still happy although I paid 3G. No lens would do what it used to did; belive me. But if you would somthing in a reasonable price for DX go for the new Nikon 35mmf/1.8 dx for $200-220. For Fx Nikon 35mm f/2 is well known for its quality I know many photographers bought it insead of the 28mm f/1.4. Also you have Sigma 28mm f/1.8 its an autofocus also.
If You want manual focus you have: Nikon 35mm f/1.4 ais, Nikon 28mm f/2 ais. Ziess has the 28mm f/2 which will be my choice for the quality.
Canon 24mm f/1.4 Ihave first version it would never replace my Nikon 28mm f1/4 in night photography and low light.
No need to switch to canon. where you have every thing in Nikon.
Good Luck
2. Hi,

I'm from Egypt and would advise you that long/white lenses are not welcomed atall. F4 is good for day light only, I suggest your 17-55 2.8 plus what ever you prefer for low light like 35 f2, 50 f1.8,50 1.4 or 85 f1.8. I fyou insist for long tele go for 70-300 DO. Regarding the ultrawide depends on your style but for me its a must.

If you want the best quality in one lens only I would suggest 35 f1.4 L

What ever you choose I hope you good luck

  3. Hi Todd,

None of your needs will apply to 16-35 as 24-70 od 5D is best for land scape when ultra wide needed.

My sugestion to you is to get 100-400L as it will open a new world for you specially when adding 1.4TC on your 40D.

You can sell 2xTC as it will not focus with 100-400.

You may add 85mm f1.2L(any version as it is one of the best canon lenses) for portrait and low light or you may prefer one of the 50mm models :f1.4, 1.8 or even 1.2L. If you find later that you need wider than 24 on 5D you may get 16-35 2.8L or 17-40 F4L.

So you are ready to any kind photography.

    Good luck.

  5. Hi Jason,

I have both lenses and they are great as every L single lens.

But 24-70 f2.8 for me is heavy for travel and short when end with 70.

when travel or spend a day for photography you should consider weight, distans, myself prefer 24-105 f4( wights 670gm) for the focal distance and the ability to have picture in 105mm in low light at 1/15 wich is imposible for me to have it with 24-70mm f2.8 at 70mm (wieghts 950gm.

Also why not portrait with f4, I use my 70-200 f4 L for portrait and every one knows its repuaion, however you can buy 24-105 and 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 which will be about 80mm and that is a portrait lens.

whatever you choose I hope you good shootin

  6. Hi, Wayne Crider,

    I have them both. with N80 I use Nikon 85mm f/1.8 and with F100 and F6 I use f/1.4 version.

The 85mm F/1.8 version is more than exlent lens and you can have it used in around $275 nearly, with your N80 you will like it very much and will have great photos with it.

I never like the weight of 85mm f/1.4 in my lovely N80.

However you may rent or try Nikon 85mm f/1.8, Nikon 85mm f/1.4, Nikon 105mm f/2 DC or even Nikon 135mm f.2 DC and decide according to their angle of view/weight and price which one of them will suite/cover your needs.

What ever you choose I hope you happy shooting

  7. This lens , 28-105, 50/1.8, 70-210 4-5.6 D + Nikon 90FX are in a bag never leav's my car unless I travel so I take 18-35 as the quality / weight and coverage are exlent. This is a must have lens without a hens.

I have 17-35mm f/2.8 but when you need to travel light and without risk I prefer the 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 I had it and my F80 with me this year in Milano and Paris were it succeeded to swallow Eiffel Tower.

I love Nikon and I love this lens.

Whatever you decide I wish you a happy shooting.

  8. Hi Marke,

I prefer the ultrawide range in f/2.8 like 17-35 for interior where low light is there.

I have found that most pics where with 85mm so my travel combo is 17-35mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.4 or 1.8 and 180mm f/2.8 I may even go without the 180mm by this you gruantee 1- high qualiy pics 2- minimum weight 3- minimum risck when changing lenses.

    Whaever you choos, good luck

  9. "Too bad about the EOS 3 misinformation"

    Hi Puppy,

I respect your opinion very much.

    Please note that:

1- I have same problem with my brand new EOS-3 and my answer came from the internet which is open source for every one where you can search and find a diffrent answers.

So the information in the internet is not a few pages that it should be covered as every boady knows.

2- My previous post which adressed for this thread is my own opinion acording my search and that what I'm ended to.

3- MY EOS-3 IS BOUGHT BRAND NEW LAST YEAR AND ITS SERIAL IS 3017361 AND IT SUFFER FROM UNDER EXPOSURE and this is why I bought 1V (which I'm very happy with)as upgrading the firmware is not avaiable where I live now.

4- Every possible way has been TESTED AND COMPARED WITH 1V ( by using EF L lenses by puting the 1V and 3 to a tripod and to photo same target many mnay times by me and a profissional friends AND NOWAY.

MY EOS- IS UNDEREXPOSURE ABOUT ONE F STOP.

So please update your information according to this facts.

And please remember my post is to help other fellows and not something else

With my all respect and appretitions to you and all the fellows.

    Best regards

  10. David, I agree with you but what to do if you whant tamron but you dont have it in your contry so I have to import it and then the luck will play with me as a lot of complain about soft in the tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and you should try yourself more than one copy.

So what you shoud do to have a good alternative for 24-70 f/2.8 which I have but I find it heavy to cary with me everyday.

I hope Tamron will take care with the control quality as this should increase its sales more and more.

So this is why I went for Canon as an alternative.

    I''m still need your advise.

  11. Hi,

Eos-3 is agreat camera but be sure tohave the one with the latest firmware where the Cf is 19 as the fist firmware with Cf17 which will result underexposure 2/3 to one F stop. IN this case you have to send it to canon center to update the firmware.

I have also Eos-1V which is still the best boady ever Canon produced, you will have same feeling and metering when use Eos-3.

    Good shooting

  12. Hi,

I see you have 3 lenses can cover your lovely daughter the 18-55, 28-90 and 50f1.8 they are all good for this purpos but you realy need the 70-200 f2.8 IS.

By this you will cover the range from about 28-320mm and you can do candis and take the photos for the people in church also.

No other lens can take the place of the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS

You can have this lens now and later you can think about 24-105 or 24-70 f/2.8

Good shooting and kisses to your lovely daughter.

    Mohamed

  13. Hi,

    Yakim; I already have 17-40/4 50/1.4 + 70-200/4 and some other Ls.

I was in Istanbul 2 weeks ago with my family where it is preferable to have light combo, so I went with 16-35 f2.8L, 28-135is and EX-220 all with Elan 7.

Although I found this combo is 80% ok I prefered to have one L lens, but as you know 24-70 L is a heavy lens and prefered 28-135is for range, IS and weight, So I hope 24-105 L range will be very useful for traveling and as allaround lens for it's quality + rahge + weight.

This is why I hope to see some day a pictures comparison between the 2 lenses as I think 24-105 has been made to replace 28-135 i professional quality.

    Thanks

  14. I would add my 2 cents as I have 16-35mm f/2.8L and 17-40mm f/4L and I have used them both so..

the 16-35 has its reputaion so no need to my opinion here.

When I rcvd the 16-35mm lens I paid customs 100% so it was about buying it with $3000. So as a big investiment I strted to think about low coast ultra wide version , ended that to avoid a vab copy or else from sigma or tamron I prefered to pay some more and have the well trusted 17-40mm f/4L.

I have found my self going more and more with 17-40 as it has same pic quality of 16-35 also there is another factor which is the addition 5mm (in 1.6 factor 35mm end equal 56mm and 40mm end equal 64mm) so with my D10 I have 27-64mm f/4L which is cover my needs indoor and also very practical outdoor.

So make your self very happy and rediscover the world with this briliant lens without a hens.

What ever you will decide I wish you

    Good shooting

  15. Hi'

I have them both and belive me Nikon F5 in another story, go get it as soon as you can and you will be very happy with it the rest of your life Good shooting.

  16. Hi'

I come with my story regarding buying 3d companies. Ihave a similer story that, I live in Egypt and ordered aused tokina 24-200 which has avery good reputaion and after test I found it has a larg amount of flare at 200mm even with f11 which is gone when i tried it with the digitl camera. Sure I cant return it back tu usa and sure I will loose its money and sure I will buy other on from canon where no place for anger after buying.

  17. I see you mentioned canon, ok

The best zooms in canon for mid range are

    17-40mm L f/4 (about $670) and 70-200mm L f/4 about ($550) and 50mmf/1.8 (about $85)

the rest money can goes with eos1V ( equal f5)used for about $1000 or eos 3( equal F100) uaed for about $500 or less.

For canon digital you can have d10 or d20 the improovment in d20 over 8mp is the ISO, ues you can use ISO1600 and here is the improovment technology from canon or you can buy the new arival eos xt (do not buy the 18-55mm lens the offer with the boady)

For Nikon have 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 (about $400 LN) and sigma 70-200 f/2.8 hsm ( this one with internal motos equal to nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 afs) used about $600 and 50mm f/1.8

For camera, used f100 (about $550)yes now we are 2005 so why do not enjoy your self and forget about fg as long as you konw it will,

or buy f5 (about $850-$1000) and know one needs to comment about it or the f100.

for nikon digital I'm fully agree with above opinion to wait for D70S and D50 and then decide

at least I'm also agree that if you go with film slr, buy a coolscan any model you can huy, I have 5000ED and its the real connection between my slr and the digital world.

I just want to give you this words after I have made a lot of investiments in the two worlds Canon and Nikon.

Whatever you choose I hope you good shooting
