  1. Hello,

another simple question: In what kind of situations would you use ISO 50.

Probably: tripod, a lot of light, etc. But does it make the photos look better?

Can you really spot the difference? Does anyone have an example picture or know

of a site with a comparison between ISO set to 50 and 100? Is it suitable for

    portraiture with studio flash light?

    Thanks!

  2. Thanks for the answers. They were all very helpful. I assume that my photo has a bit of it all:

    a) perspective distortion, as a part of the wall i photographed in front doesn't run parallel to the sensor (how i held the camera). I fixed it in photoshop.

    b) 50mm is not distortion free. Sounds very logical what you all described. Some teachers and some books are just not very exact and.

    c) the original picture had a slight curve in the very edge of the horizon. It might have been the earth (which I doubt), but probably it was just the 50mm. I simply cropped the image.

  3. Hello,

    I use a EOS 1Ds MKII with a Canon 50mm 1.4/L lens and photographed pictures of a

horizon of the sea (from a tripod). Now in photoshop it looks for me that the

horizon is slightly arched in the corners.

    My question:

    - Does even a 50mm lens have distortion (I always thought it was distortion-free)?

    - Am I experiencing an other effect, e.g. is this already the arching of the

    globe (I doubt it)?

    Thanks!

  4. Hello,

I just returned from a trip and looked at my photos. Unfortunately I had to spot

ugly dust spots on the photos. I have to clean my lenses more often (I only did

it one time after arriving at my destination) it seems.

    My questions:

    - Do you clean your lenses every time before you take out the camera?

    - What material/device do you use to clean a lens? There are plenty of things on

the market and I haven't found anything that makes me happy (I tried thin paper,

alcoholic paper, brushes with air, air pressure, fabric, rubber gum). Please

recommend the material that works best for you.

    Thanks a lot.

  5. The Acute 2 is not battery operated. You need to be in reach within electricity at all times. You could bring a strong generator on location also but those kinds are usually quite loud and are extremely heavy.

Profoto just released a small AcuteB generator. But it has only 600ws and the battery is capable of about 160 full power flashes.

  6. Hello,

I use the Profoto Acute 1200 studio flash system and a Canon EOS 1Ds MKII for

    photographing people.

When I take portrait pictures I wish to have only a short depth of field so for

example that only the eyes are in focus and the rest blurs out.

Unfortunately I always have too much light even with this small setup (the 1200

generator) and as the EOS 1Ds has a sync speed of 1/250s I simply cannot use

apertures of 1.2 or 1.8 as I desire. 5.6 is something I can use but I'd prefer a

    wider opened aperture.

I know there would be several solutions:

    - Placing the light further away from the subject: I don't want to as I prefer

to keep the light close to the face for what I want to do and also my room is

    too small

    - Putting additional diffusors/fabric on the surface of a softbox for example: I

    don't really want to though.

    Now my question:

    - How are the Pros doing it? Do they all use Hasselbladts so they can set the

sync speed to 1/500s oder 1/1000s?

    - Am I doing something wrong with adjusting the Acute 1200 generator and do I

have the possibility to set the light power even lower maybe?

    Thanks for answering!

    Cheers

    Chris

  7. Hello,

I have an original Canon Ni-MH PACK NP-E3 which only lasts for about 300 photos.

It was bought this year, has been recharged about 4 times. Each time it was

fully empty before recharging and completely charged before usage.

I wonder if it should last longer than for 300 photographs usually? I have

automatic playback of pictures turned on (1 second) and I used a lot of

    autofocussing.

Is my battery intact or not?

    Thanks!

  8. Hello,

I am going to travel from Germany to New York City, USA and want to take my

    Canon EOS 1Ds MKII.

I have read somewhere that there are problems with airport security sometimes

and they claim the Canon EOS 1Ds MKII would be too dense to check it or

something. Technically speaken this is absolute nonsense to me but I am a bit

afraid that something might happen when I stand in front of a bad security officer.

Does anyone know of this problem or is it just one of those things where people

    spread rumors?

    Thanks

    Chris

  9. I ordered at a big and reliable dealer. I get a lot of equipment from that dealer and only the high-class lenses are a problem. That is definitely a Canon problem. They are very unrealiable and slow in Germany. The dealer calls them and still they can't tell a date. Disappointing.

The problem is that Canon prefers to produce products for the masses like their small consumer cameras. They sell thousands of those and obviously earn more with that than by selling high class lenses.

If they were able to deliver I had bought the EF35 L lense and my order for the 85 L 1.2 is still running.

Today I saw an add in a photo magazine for their new 85mm lens and that is really bullshit - marketing for a lens that they cannot deliver. How should a client feel about that?

  10. I don't understand how strong a lot of you guys stand behind the brand Canon. They definitely have a big problem in delivering high quality products in Germany. I had the same problem when I asked for the 35mm L lens. I canceled my ordered after 7 months of waiting. I understand if there is a high demand but then at least - as with every car dealer - I would like to have a delivery date announced. If they tell me they can produce the lens in 8 weeks - ok. But if I wait for 8 weeks without even knowing when I can get the lens, it is Canon's fault and I blame them for that.

Canon USA may be different but ordering a lens from abroad is not a good idea (customs, warranty, etc.).

Maybe you understand my anger, I am just very disappointed that I have to wait for so long even though I am not living in a communist country...

  11. Thanks for your replies. Sorry, I forgot to mention, I am in Germany (Frankfurt, Germany). And I couldn't find any German internet dealer and the pro stores in Frankfurt (who really have a lot of heavy gear) don't have the lenses and when I ask them to order it for me they say, Canon cannot tell a delivery date.

Maybe it is different at Canon, USA. But I know that 1 year ago B&H photo and video had big problems in delivering the 35mm lens. Actually I told them to e-mail me once they have it in stock and never got an e-mail (not even 1 year later).

Would you recommend delivery from USA to Germany? I have a bit fear about problems/return and the shipping and customs will be expensive also.

    Thanks

    Max

  12. The new Canon EF 85mm, 1.2L lens has been announced for April 2006.

None of my vendors can give me any information about its

availability. Does anybody here know about it? Where can I purchase

it? And why is Canon always so bad when it comes to producing and

selling products (I was never able to buy a 35mm L lens because it

was simply never available anywhere for example).

    Thanks

    Max
