How about Canonet QL17 GIII?
It may not be as compact as you would like, but it has manual control and shutter speed AE, although you lose metering on manual mode.
I have one and I like it with relatively fast F1.7 lens. Since you said you can use digisix meter (which I also use), you don't have to worry about the battery issue.

I use V500 for both MF and 35mm and I am happy with the results.
It is simple and just good enough for digitizing and occasional 8x12 prints from it.

I have sent two Rolleiflex's to Mark and in both cases, his work was excellent and turn around time was good. You might want to call him instead, if you need his answer right away...

0.85 x finder M6 may be good if you shoot longer, but you can also use 1.25 x magnifier, which is surprisingly good and you will not lose an option for wider lenses.

Why not the classified section here?? It's free, and if it doesn't sell, go to RFF.

It's very good if you don't want to spend much $$. But then, you can probably live with LTM version, which is cheaper and comes with 21mm finder. For the use with M8, you can add 28mm finder from voigtlander... I used to have LTM version of this lens, but now have C-Biogon and happier.

I agree that it's refurbished. New one comes with two year warranty...

If you like to work with hand held meter, then used M2 can be had not much more than a new Bessa body. Then you may also be able to pick up leica lens,,,

If you don't have a wedding to cover, then 14-24 may be a good option to extend your coverage, but for the wedding, 24-70 is what I would recommend.

Tamron 90mm
in Nikon

It is SLOW. I have tamron on Canon and Nikon VR. Tamron is really slow, but for macro, there is no problem with slow focus... It is, however, a bit of problem when trying to shoot something else...
-

Nobody have suggested Sigma 150/2.8 macro... Well, it may be too close to your 180mm, but it is a good lens (when I had on my Canon mount), and I am looking to buy one..

Have one. I thought about replacing it with 14-24, but then changed my mind considerig that 17-35 has got much better focal range for me. 17mm is wide enough. Size is the only thing that I do not like, but again, it's smaller than other F2.8 zooms...

I have been using 2.8-4 version with good results, but am selling it now since I got 24-70. Then, I have picked up 28-105D to use as a walk around lens. No experience with AF-S version, though.

What FL did you use with your 5D?
I think difference in FL is larger than difference in performance of these lenses. Both lenses are good enough, I think.

I have LTM version and I live it. It came with the finder, which I need. I believe you can still buy it new and cost less than the newer version, althogh you have to have an adapter...

You hear the shutter noise because your camera is at your face. Peopla around you may not hear it unless you are in really quiet place as said above.

Both brands are built very well. But if I have to pick one, then it would be Leica, which has better built. But then, it's comparing 100% and 105%, so you may feel differently.
One thing I like about Zeiss is that the aperture ring has 1/3 stop instead of 1/2 stop of Leica. I like the lens cap of Leica better than Zeiss. I like focusing "ring" better than focusing "tub".
Anyway, this is just how I feel about those lens built quality, and optical quality is totally different story so is the pricing...

Actually, I have had my IIIf repaired by him, and it only took a week including the shipping across the US. Now the camera really feels smooth and everything works like new. I have sent my cameras to a few different persons, but Youxin is the best.

For 35mm, I like ZM Biogon F2, and for 28mm Ultron F1.9, both of which are not so expensive.

-

35/1.4, 28/1.9 or 28/2, 25/4, or 21/4... All of those VC lenses are within your budget. You can decide based on FL. Personally, I have, or have had, all except the newer Ultron, and I like 28/1.9 the best if I have to pick one to go with 50mm.

I've never had any RF problem on Mamiya 7II. Plus, you can only have F4 lenses, so you will not need super accurate RF to just have your subject in focus... unless you want to "control" DOF.

-

Hexar RF's got all.

-

I have both Hexar RF and R2A and sold both. I like the Hexar better due to its built quality, excellent view finder for 28mm, good RF patch, ergonomics, etc. The only thing I didn't like about Hexar is its auto wind/re-wind, which makes this camera a lot noisier. But if you don't care about it, Hexar is the choice.
For R2A, I liked everything for the price, but I wanted 28mm finder, longer RA baseline (although I never had any focus problem...)...

Digital depends on the sensor and a good sensor today may not be considered as good in two years due to the newer technology. Film is matured, and good body stays good.
