Paul, I think you should bring the A700, I suspect you would regret it if you didn't. Let's face it, the A700 is not worth so much these days but as a camera,

It still sells for $999.99 , that's not so cheep if you loose or break it. That's still more than you pay for a Canon 40d 0r 50d. But would still take it on the trip, it is a much better camera and it is sealed against dust and moisture unlike the a100.

 2.
You just need to take some test shots and bracket a few shots. I usually spot meter the moon and subtract one to two stops of exposure to make sure I don't blow it out of range.
This was shot @f10 iso 100 at 1/20 minus -1 stop of exposure using Sony a700 w/ 70-300SSM,G @300mm (450mm in 35mm or FF ).

00USdn-171705584.jpg.69e9696ef0e12b9b48cd641500cfacb0.jpg

 3.
I would say go with the Maxxum 800si with the vc700 grip, it was the most advanced camera that Minolta made until they came out with the Maxxum 9 and you can pick one up for around 100 bucks on ebay or go to the store tab at the top of this page and look it up. The only down fall is you can't use SSM lenses on it unless you manually focus them. But then again unless you get a Maxxum 9 with a upgraded af system you can't use SSM lenses on them either. (The Maxxum 5 & Maxxum 7 are the only cameras that Minolta made that work with SSM lenses , you could pick up7 for about 250, ( I wouldn't go with the 5).

Wireless flash trigger function (DSLR-A900 only)

When teamed with the α900, the HVL-F20AM can also be used to trigger wireless flash setups. Please note, however, that this functionality is only available with DSLR-A900, and does not include luminosity ratio control.

This is from the Sony Style website, found in the Features tab.

 5.
I've used a Kenko pro 300 1.4x with my Sony G 70-300ssm (w/ A700) and it works fine and I get great shots with it at 300mm (630mm in 35mm ) wide open. All functions of the lens work including the AF at all f stops. might be a good option you may want to look into.

 6.
Rich,
Nope. I heard that it was a faulty cam prob, that over time prematurely wore out. Well it wasn't completely dormant, I took it out every few weeks and ran it through the paces so as not to let it sit totally inactive.

 7.
Thanks Robert, I contacted Precision Camera and the fix is still free and all I have to pay for is shipping.
Paul I bought it new with in a month of the release date, $1400.00 usd
Jiun my camera is very lightly used and I really haven't used it much at all in the last 1 1/2yrs and this was a known prob with the camera that could happen at any point in it's life of 100,000 shutter accusations, mine has far less than half of that. Sony said when they bought out the Konica Minolta camera dept that they would fix the prob free of charge if any 7d owners had a prob with them even if they were out of warranty. and this is the only prob I ever had with it (ha ha ha, laughing very loud).

 8.
My back up 7D is having issues with the common BLK FM . I sent Sony tec a email and got the usual go to the sony repair site that guided me through a few hoop putting down camera info and prob. Then I got to the bottom and they wanted CC info, and a upfront payment of 269.00 usd to send it in and then the repairs mount after that. Well of course I canceled out of that screen and sent them a email reply to give me more info on the repair and steps to get it fixed. They haven't got back yet so I called and talked to some weird digital tec voice thing that took all my info again and then it told me that Sony no longer fixes the BLK FM prob for free, it will cost 209.00 usd and I have to pay for shipping and that doesn't include taxes and a few other charges that the digital voice rattled off, I couldn't understand what it said so I said thx good bye. So NO MORE FREE FIXES. That program ended some time in 2008, she said. WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP.

Sony SLR sensor ranks below Nikon, above Canon

Three midrange Sony SLRs now are included in DxO Labs’ measurements of image sensor performance, and the Alpha A700 proves to be reasonably competitive.
Sony’s A700, which costs about $1,100 with an 18-70mm lens, has a score of 66.3 on the test, which calculates how well the sensor handles color, a range brightness and darkness, and low-light shooting. That puts it behind the top-scoring camera with a comparably sized sensor, the Nikon D90, almost ties it with the Pentax K10D and Nikon D300, and gives it a a few points’ lead over Canon’s 40D and 50D.
Meanwhile, the A200 scores 62.9 and the A300 an even 64, according to the DxOMark Sensor test results that were updated Tuesday. A five-point difference makes a difference of about 1/3 stop in exposure, DxO says, meaning that a higher-scoring camera can attain the same raw image quality as a rival even though the higher-scoring camera is using a faster exposure or higher ISO.
DxO Labs, a French company, makes a business of measuring camera image quality, developing technology for image-processing hardware and software, and selling software to convert the raw files produced by higher-end cameras into less flexible but more convenient formats such as JPEG. The DxOMark score measures sensor performance based on the raw file, a foundation for overall image quality but only a facet of a camera’s overall performance.
Almost all cameras must ‘demosaic’ data from the image sensor, which records light in a checkerboard pattern of red, green, and blue light, to produce a JPEG image.
Almost all cameras must ‘demosaic’ data from the image sensor, which records light in a checkerboard pattern of red, green, and blue, to produce a JPEG image.
(Credit: DxO Labs)
The company postponed scoring the A700 because until the newer version 4.0 of its firmware, the camera performed noise-reduction processing on the green light captured by the sensor before generating the raw file. DxO frowns upon cameras reducing noise before the raw file is produced, in part because it misses out on steady improvements in software such as Photoshop that can convert raw images.
DxO’s scores haven’t been met with universal acclaim. In response to some criticisms and in an attempt to dispel some confusion, DxO has published a boiled-down DxOMark Sensor explanation.
For example, the company has this to say about sensor resolution, an issue that arose when comparing medium-format cameras with large, high-resolution sensors to high-end SLRs: “DxOMark Sensor and resolution are two independent metrics of sensor performance. As a consequence, just because camera A has more pixels than camera B (and thus sees more details) does not mean that its raw DxOMark Sensor score will be better. So before comparing cameras with DxOMark Sensor, it is important to first determine the resolution you are looking for.”
