  1. Latham-

I took this shot with the 550ex pointed to the left instead of straight up so the light was coming in from the side. I typically mix it around alot during shoots to get diversified looks. I don't use a bracket so it was mounted directly on my camera. I really want to get the wireless transmitter so I can take the flash off of the camera and do some experimenting.

    Take care, Ed

  2. Tell them if they want it "cheap" You will shoot walmart film and process it at Costco. They can buy their own album from K-mart.

No seriously...what I do is ask what their budget is. If they say 1k than I will usually give them a certain amount of hours with 4x6 proofs.

Personally I would rather pay 1k for 1 hour of exceptional photography than 1k for 5 hours of coverage that a 10 year old with a holga could have shot.

Speaking of Holgas...here's a shot of my baby last week.....<div>00BQe4-22253384.jpg.2243ed289f2c52e6e9e427c058e1af65.jpg</div>

  3. In my area the theme is "back to basics" for weddings. I think that the trend the LA Times has reported has defintely begun. Casual relaxed low key weddings have been going up in my area.

As far as engagement shots, couples especially the brides prefer closer more detail shots and less full body.

This kind of shooting is my style anyways so I don't mind.<div>00BAev-21902584.jpg.158da7fe4326193180e875eac0ae9200.jpg</div>

  4. Definatley Polychrome. If you have eight days I would suggest hiking around. Like others said basically anywhere in Denali is beautiful. Typically I set up a main camp at Wonder Lake. Each morning I hop on the bus and get off when I feel like it. The drivers will stop wherever you tell them to.

If you get off and don't like where you are, don't worry another bus will be along soon that you can hop on. At the end of the day just make for the road and hop on a bus going in the wonder lake direction. It's very easy and simple with plenty of wildlife and beautiful mtns.

If you stay at wonder lake make sure you bring plenty of bug spray and a net for your face is an absolute must. Trust me, the last time I was there my arm was covered in mosquitos. I could not see the material of my jacket!

Also take the bus past wonder lake to Kantishna...beautiful beautiful.

If your flying out of anchorage stop at Sullivans Steakhouse in downtown. I work there. The best steak you have ever tasted.

    Have fun, Ed

  5. I totally agree with Marc about going to the clients...Home visits...work visits etc. I am a college student who lives in an apartment. When people call me they think they are calling a company with a few employees. When I make appointments I tell them that we offer a home visits if that is more convenient. They love it and can't believe we do that. I have also found that by going to their homes they are more comfortable and usually choose me because they feel that I have catered to their needs already.
  6. My belief is:

Documentary: Photographing anything that is going on around you. "Documenting" the day. I think this is more of a generic term.

Photojournalistic: Much more detailed. Definately a version of Documentary but displayed differently. This category shows feeling, emotion, details.

To me when an image makes my emotions come out it is photojournalistic. Ed McCulloch<div>00AsAQ-21498384.jpg.8589c8be20d9bdb958b2a7caf1ac9b50.jpg</div>

  7. I have got a small business as well...I'm still a college student. For the last year I developed marketing and promotion plans. I developed plans for every avenue of my business for the next three years.

I have officially been open for business for 7 days. My advertising and promotions schedule started then. So far I have made 5 appointments and have booked 4 of them. So far for every call that I'v received I have been able to book an apointment.

My advertising has costed a total of $4,000 between a bridal fair last week, print brochures and business cards and my online advertising. I have already made back the difference so it's profit from here on out.

As far as referrel fees go I have made an agreement between myself and another photographer in town. The only photographer in the state where I actually like his work. We have worked out a deal to where if my date is booked I refer him. If he books it than I get 10% of the package price. He averages about $4,000 per package so to make one phone call I make about $400.

As far as the other vendors go I have made some good contacts but will not be giving them any money for referrels.

Good Luck to you....This has been an adventure and is paying off quickly.......Ed
