  1. You can definately gel the light. But I would highly reccomend the whilbal at whibal.com It's given me perfect white balance every time. You take a pic of it under the same light that you are shooting in. The expodisc is supposed to be excellent as well just a little pricier. Here's a sample of the whibal with daylight mixed with my strobe.

    Good luck, Ed<div>00ENiO-26781684.jpg.bd125a05b442525d2441e17d8fa3bc9c.jpg</div>

  2. I have searched through the archives and have not been able to find

    what I'm looking for.

I'm a college student wanting to buy some monlights for on location

shooting. My school lets me borrow some of their older Travelite

750's. In studio we have dyna-lite.

It's turning out to be a pain to keep checking lights out so I'd

    like to get my own.

I've come across the Alienbees lights. In other posts people have

said that they like them and they do a good job etc etc. But my

question is how good of a job? I don't know what kind of images

these people produce with Alienbees lights so just because they say

they are good doesn't mean they really are.

All of this wouldn't really be a question except I'm low and money

and I would like to get some accesories as well. If I spring for the

travelites I can't really afford accessories. I love grids and small

    softboxes for an example.

I'm trying to progress my work to the highest level. Maybe the

question I should be asking is how many good pros use Ab's? But

    then again isn't light light?

    Thanks for your help.<div>00DrVy-26074584.jpg.c6a023d22f9b2e5e06e7f2fe61c6b49c.jpg</div>

  3. I would shoot the group under an awning or inside, although I have shot large groups outside in the rain. They bring umbrellas and hide them behind when I shoot the shot.

As far as the bride and groom, it's up to them but most want to get out in the rain....

  4. I usually wear a good rain jacket with a hood. I usually just have someone hold an umbrella for me over myself and the gear. Usually someone in the party offers to do it. Typically thunderstorms come and go rather quickly as well so it would be pretty unlikely that you would have to shoot for hours in the rain. My cameras have gotten a little wet but they always seem to be ok.

Good luck and have fun....I love thunderstorms...plus it can make for interesting and fun pictures.

  5. Thanks for the advice you guys. I still don't know how to get my hard drive space back. Evidently when I dragged the files and folders into the recycle bin they were not permenantly deleted off of my computer.

I have looked through the hard drive but can't seem to find where they might be.

If anyone knows where abouts to look that would be great. I need to find them so I can free up the space.

I am running Norton Antivirus so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Thanks for your help, Ed McCulloch

  6. I'm running windows xp.

I have recently sent about 60 gigs of images to the recycle bin.

    I emptied the recycle bin.

My problem is that I haven't gained any more space on my hard

drive. I'm still showing what it was before I got rid of the

    files.

I'm really not quite sure where to look for them because I deleted

    out of their image folders.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks- Ed McCulloch

  7. My personal feeling on the subject is that a good majority of digital shooters do not post process their images correctly. There's a lot more involved into getting nice images from digital than film. With film you do your thing and drop it off at the lab with instructions. With digital your in charge of the post process and I just don't think many people do it right. I've been learning post process techniques for the last year and am barely getting a handle on it and getting the images right.<div>00C2Wb-23230984.jpg.69008c3258b55be25687291edd389867.jpg</div>
  8. Jan-

When I shoot with flash outside I use manual mode. If I'm not using flash I use AV mode.

In manual mode outside I take a few light readings at the brightness of the background. This is what I set the exposure to as to ensure non blown out backgrounds. I then take a test shot or two and decide on the the flash. I use the 550ex and plus or minus the flash length in order to arrive at the final exposure. Once I find these settings I shoot away. As long as the light isn't changing a whole lot it works out great. I shoot in raw as well so if I'm slightly off I really don't care.

Being further away I would do the same thing. I would just plus the flash until it lite the subjects up.

I use the lightsphere exclusively now. Outside I point it towards the subjects with the top on. Inside I use it as little as possible.

I practiced on my baby until I got it right or until she couldn't take anymore!

    Good Luck, Ed<div>00BtXH-22948984.jpg.2229ecabe6cd3f1d0cdca27843e6e055.jpg</div>

  9. I sold mine because it was way too slow for what I need. Instead I purchased the 24mm 1.4 to add to my collection. I used it for the first time last weekend.

For outside work the 17-40mm is fine but inside I had to watch my shutter speeds.

    Good Luck

  10. What I have been doing is:

Meeting at a coffe shop or Borders.

I use to go to their homes but it seemed that they took me less serious and were not as interested with the home visits. When they had to get in their car and drive somewhere to meet me they were alot more serious about it.

I am moving to a new house. The first room will be set up nicely with personal portfolio shots on the walls of family etc. When a client is scheduled to come over I am going to put out the albums on the coffee table and put up about 4 easles with very large prints mounted on art foam board. Print size is going to be 20x30. And then when they leave I just take down the easles and slide the prints under my bed.

The the plan for me anyway.

  11. Adobe accidentally posted a press release for CS2. Batch processing

in the background and a crop feature for the raw developer! It

wasn't supposed to be posted until April...It's no longer on their

    site but here it is:

    For immediate release

Adobe Pushes the Boundaries of Digital Photography and Imaging with

    Debut of Photoshop CS2

New Vanishing Point Feature, Dramatic Camera Raw Workflow

Enhancements, Customizable Menus and Smart Objects Headline Milestone

    Photoshop Upgrade

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? April 4, 2005 ? Adobe Systems Incorporated

(Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe? Photoshop? CS2, a major

    upgrade

to the professional industry standard for digital image editing and

creation. Available as a stand-alone software application or as a key

component of Adobe Creative Suite? 2, also announced today (see

separate press release), Photoshop CS2 software brings a new level of

power, precision and control to the digital photography experience

    and

    to the overall creative process.

"Photoshop CS2 pushes the envelope with powerful features and

simplified workflows that provide photographers and creative

professionals the freedom to deliver stunning images," said Bryan

Lamkin, senior vice president of Digital Imaging and Digital Video

Products at Adobe. "In light of the four million digital SLRs

    expected

to ship this year, more photographers than ever will be making

Photoshop CS2 their digital darkroom of choice."

Advanced Tools for Digital Photographers, Graphics and Video

    Professionals

Photoshop CS2 integrates a new set of intuitive tools, including an

enhanced Spot Healing Brush, for handling common photographic

    problems

such as blemishes, red-eye, noise, blurring and lens distortion.

    Smart

Objects allow users to scale and transform images and vector

illustrations without losing image quality ? as well as create

    linked

duplicates of embedded graphics ? so that a single edit updates

    across

    multiple iterations.

Responding to requests from film, broadcast and video professionals,

Photoshop CS2 now allows non-destructive editing and the creation and

editing of 32-Bit High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, ideal for 3D

rendering and advanced compositing. FireWire Previews can also be

viewed on a television monitor through a new direct export feature.

Photoshop CS2 users will test the limits of creativity with new tools

like Vanishing Point and Image Warping. Vanishing Point cuts tedious

graphic and photo retouching tasks by allowing users to clone, paint

and transform image objects while retaining visual perspective.

Reinventing workflows such as product packaging development, Image

Warping makes it easy to fold, stretch, pull, twist and wrap an image

into shape by selecting an on-demand preset or dragging custom

    control

    points.

Adobe Bridge and New Camera Raw Features Speed Imaging Workflows

With Photoshop CS2 software, finding and working with digital photos

and images has never been easier. The popular File Browser has been

upgraded to Adobe Bridge, which functions as a hub for productivity,

imagery and creativity, providing multi-view file browsing and smooth

cross-product integration across Adobe Creative Suite 2 software.

Adobe Bridge also provides access to Adobe Stock Photos, a new stock

photography service that offers users one-stop shopping ? across

    five

elite stock image providers ? to deliver high-quality,

    royalty-free

images for layout and design (see separate press release).

The new Camera Raw 3.0 workflow allows settings for multiple raw

    files

to be simultaneously modified. In addition batch processing of raw

files, to JPEG, TIFF, DNG or PSD formats, can now be done in the

background without launching the main Photoshop executable.

Integrated, non-destructive cropping and straightening controls allow

raw files to be easily prepared for final output.

Simplifying Photoshop's rich interface, task-based menu presets make

it easier to find the features needed for specific work. Users can

create their own custom presets, highlighting favorite items and now

have the ability to define event-based scripts and time-saving

operations that execute automatically when triggered by actions, such

as saving or printing a file. Multiple Layer Controls speeds editing,

enabling the simultaneous selection and manipulation of numerous

    layers within a file.
