My girlfriend is an F3 user. Her camera is totally beat up and handed down from
her mother.
I have found a 'new' FM3a and I want to buy it for her as a present. It is an
ex-demo 'salesman's' black body in mint condition.
Will she consider this camera an upgrade from her F3 or will it just be a nicer
version of a lesser camera?
I would welome sugestions. Thanks.

Stephen, do you think the camera actually changes exposure when the light comes on or is it just the light being activated by the pressure?

The point in my viewfinder sometimes does this when my nose presses against the exp comp. dial-not the little button, just the actual dial. Crappy design flaw IMO. I bet you are a left eye shooter.

Which lens/M body combo feels the most comfortable to use? I have several lenses
but have always felt the 50 Lux pre asph on an M7 or MP feels the most
comfortable. The short focus throw, barrel thickness and focus ring instead of
tab somehow works together to make the whole package really well balanced. We
have heard loads about glass performance and sharpness, but for me ease of use
and instinctive ergonomics have just as important a role to play in rating a lens.
I suspect it is different for others and would be interested to read about it.

Thanks. New batteries installed.

Sorry if this has been posted before but my led readout on my M7 now flashes
between feint and strong. The numbers are displayed as normal, they just flash.
does this mean low batteries or what? I thought bc comes up for low batteries,
so is this the preliminary to bc?
Thanks for comments.

Check out The Classic Camera site. They have the new 50 lux in chrome. I thought they only did the LHSA retro one in chrome but this is the regular new Lux in chrome. Would look great on that M7.

Vinay,
You wrote: "Wide open until around f/5.6 it so outclasses the previous Lux it isn't even a contest."
What exactly do you mean by outclass? If the sole object of a lens is to help the photographer create aesthetically pleasing images, then what criteria are you using to make this assertion?
Why do some people turn Leica photography into an incredibly expensive game of Top Trumps? The beauty of the Leica cult is in it's long lineage of lenses offering different, not better, signatures. You can get a 200 dollar Elmar and use it to create an image that might be more beautiful than the same shot with a different, more recent 50 in the hands of the same photographer.

I took the nocti into Richard Caplans and shot some frames with the nocti and the new Lux to see if there was any difference. The shots were outside in daylight so the apertures were not wide. It was very hard to see any difference. Wide open there is nothing to compare with the effect a nocti can create but then there is the smaller size of the Lux to consider. I was going to sell my pre asph lux but actually withdrew it from sale after flicking through my album and realising what a great lens it is so whatever you do don't sell that.
My person opinion of the new Lux is that it is TOO sharp. But I like taking pictures of people and I don't necessarily need to see all their blocked skin pores. Maybe if you were a scientist or naturalist or something...
Anyway with your current lens set up I think a nocti might be a worthwhile addition.

Lu you're out of control man. You just got a beautiful 75 cron. If you want sharp you already have it. And another Nocti? I'm still learning how to use your last one! Come and see me at the stall and I'll try to talk some sense into you. (coming from a man who has three 50s)

I have taken my MP and seperately an M7 to trips to the East Scottish coast. The beaches are wonderful but windy. All I did was keep a filter on and have the Leica eveready case on it. It's a very snug fit. Just unsnap the top take a pic and then close it immediately after and stick it a holdall. I have had absolutely no problems this way. You're right, it's a shame to leave it at home.

FYO I spoke to Leica UK yeterday to follow up on an early MP of mine they have in service. They are cleaning the dust out of the VF and sealing the eyepiece. They told me that all new Ms that come in get the eyepieces sealed before they are shipped to the dealers. I wonder if othe countries do the same thing.

How about:
get the MP eveready case that fits an M6 or 7 or MP WITH leicavit so no one will know if the winder is black or chrome. The case looks great BTW.

a while ago I read about a new fast colour film. can someone tell me what that was? Also, I am taking some concert pics next week of a friend. Any suggestions of fast film would be great. At the moment it's neopan 1600 with nocti and 800 portra. Thanks for any suggestions.

...or get him an M7.

Sparkie,
I dont have a pic but I used the Leica MP case for a few months. It attatches to the camera the same way the regular case does. There are two small straps with snaps that go around the lugs. The case is EXTREMELY well made, I don't see all this fuss about Credenza, to me they look rather camp. Anyway, the only criticism is that it doesn't have the slightly raised ridge on the right hand side that the regular ER case has as a nice grip. The front lens part is nicely squared off and obviously the top part snaps off to make a half case.
I sold it because I have the regular case and prefer to have the camera 'naked' when I use the Leicavit.

Mitchell, we rentged it at Battersea Pk. Very hard to steer. Fer the first 10 minutes she swayed all over the place like she was absolutely besotted.

Besoffen, I think, means drunk. As dumkopf means stupid. I write in English, where besotted can also mean 'crazy about' or 'Love'
Maybe I should have named it, 'pictures of a girl'.

Buying an FM3a for an F3 user
in Nikon
Posted
Thanks for such prompt answers. The FM3a is 900 bucks. A lot of money I know, but it is new in box and has 1 year warranty so I figure a premium is worth it.
What do you mean about the viewfinder? I am a rangefinder man but I always thought SLR viewfinders were 'what you see is what you shoot.' Am I to understand that this is not the case with the FM3a?
