  1. Trevor, since you already have Nikon glass the D70 makes sense. However, in reading the chat on DPreview, it seems the D70 has some focusing issues and software problems. I started out wanting a 10D until I handled one and the weight was an issue also. The new 1D MkII looks good too, but those type of Canon's are well, like carrying a cannon, too freaking big and heavy. On the other hand, my email friend, Andrea Taurisano, just got a D70 and he is producing awesome, I mean simply awesome, shots. I am still waiting to fondle a D70 versus an E1, however, so I haven't made a definitive choice. By the way DPreview has pictures of the D70 versus the Canon 300D (which uses the same sensor as the 10D) and the results are very revealing. Check it out!
  2. Trevor, after doing a lot of research, I'll probably replace the Sony V1 in my bag with a DSLR. I'll keep the Sony for vacations with the wife, but I think a DSLR makes a lot of sense as a backup for my M's. I have issues with EVERY DSLR currently in production. Maybe by the time I'm ready someone will have a new version out. If I had to buy right now I'd get an Olympus E1, because it has the most features that I, personally, want. Be nice if the price dropped, though ;-)
  3. Martin, I shoot an M4 w/o a meter and do okay. I still get several shots a roll that are either over or under exposed, but I must say I get a lot of pleasure NOT using a meter and getting great shots. Yes, I'm over 50 and I suppose that gives us old farts (comparatively speaking) an advantage since we all shot in the days before built-in meters. I also have a M6 TTL .85 and I never miss a shot with it. I usually have one loaded with color and the other with b/w. Sometimes I load both with b/w and use my digicam for color. Good luck.
  4. Yaron, as to what I intend to do with it - believe it or not, I'll use it as a backup for my M's! It will also replace my R5 as the SLR in my bag. And yes, I considered the new Leica Digilux 2, and I don't believe there is really anything wrong with it, but its not a DSLR.
  5. Yaron, I'm a Leica M shooter. Which I would never give up. I also have a Sony V1 which is 5 mp. I have the Sony because of its size. I have been looking for a DSLR. At first I wanted a 10D, then a D70. But the size of the E1, the 100% viewfinder, the auto dust remover, and hell, can anyone really tell the difference in 1 mp? Besides I have also heard about some problems with the D70 (focus, software). It seems I just keep coming back to the E1. Even with its unique lens system and all, its still something I believe I could live with.
  6. To all you Olympus users out there, if money were no object would

you go for a C-8080 or E1? and why?

I'm impressed with the specs on both these cameras and the latest

post on Luminous Landscape really got me thinking. I thought I had

picked an E1 over the D70 (I know all you Nikon freaks are blown

away by the idea), because the E1 has some features which are

important to me that the D70 doesn't have. In a perfect world they

would offer the E1 with at least 6mp. However, the C-8080 is really

looking good, even with the smaller sensor.

    Thanks for all the replies.

  7. Hey guys if I wanted an expensive bag I'd just buy a Zero Halliburton and be done with it. Then I can put on a three-piece suit and look like a businessman when I go on a shoot! That's not the point. I carry my gear in an old, beat up surfer's backpack. Nobody gives it a second glance, just like shooting with an M4!! I only wanted a recommendation for a smaller bag to keep the bodies in with lens attached, inside the backpack. OTOH, my wife would prefer I use a fancy case and wear my suits more often ;)
  8. I carry my Leicas in a very nondescript backpack. I have been

carrying each one seperately in a fake chamois bag w/drawstring.

However, with a 90 cron or larger lens mounted, the camera is very

hard to remove or put back into the bag. Does someone make a small

padded zipper bag (inexpensive) which will hold an M w/long lens?

    Thanks.

  9. You asked about the levers: the two on the right side (as the camera hangs from its strap) the lower, larger lever is a self-timer, the smaller releases the film so it can be rewound. The lever on the left is the frame line lever and like Bill said it will automatically line up the lines when the lens is installed. It also acts a preview lever which you can use to see what your scene would look like with the other lenses.

    Have fun.

  10. I don't usually get involved in threads such as this, however the reason I prefer my Leicas is the end product - awesome b/w. OTOH, I absolutely hate that red dot or any visible logo (large LEICA on front of camera for example) that would identify me overtly as part of some dilettantish group. Ferrari and Porsche owners are some of the worst examples and I should know having succumbed to owning both and then trying to hide from their ranks! For this reason I have a "black dot" M6 TTL LHSA, virtually unidentifiable by an unknowing public and a classic M4, ditto. Brand recognition of perceived quality is nice, but a little out of control thanks to marketing procedures which tout exclusivity of ownership as a way of standing apart from your peers.

My wife once prevailed on me to go to a Ferrari meet after years of being gone from the scene just to see if anyone I knew was still around. I returned and told her that I saw one or two enthusiasts from the old days but that the gold chain crowd changes every three or four years and it seemed to be more about conspicuous consumption than anything else. And I guess that is what (sadly) makes todays world go 'round...

  11. My friend Warren Leib donated his father's COLOR movie footage of the D-Day invasion to the National Archive. His father was a war photographer for Movietone and took along his family movie camera. They are pretty incredible. He showed them to our Brotherhood at the Temple last month. There may be a VHS available from Warren if anyone is interested. Lots of pictures of the liberation of Paris also.
  12. I'll give this a shot, Rene. The vapor trail represents the split between earth and sky, man and universe. If the building shadow on the right could be considered a new building, then we have old versus new also. I mean everything is subjective and it can mean (or not) whatever you wish it to. Let your imagination soar, just as you would when out shooting...
  13. Trevor, you imply that anyone on eBay using a P.O. box must be a crook. FYI, there are places in US where there is no postal delivery (as in many other places of the world!) and where people such as myself must collect our mail at a post office. I have had no problems using my p.o. box for buying and selling on eBay and I have a 100% rating.
