  1. Depending on how big the difference is in contrast, you could meter for the highlights, shoot raw and then brighten the shadows on one conversion. Then you could merge two together at the horizon like others have explained. Cheating? Given that you could do this in a traditional darkroom, it is hard to draw a line. I think that if it gives you a pleasing piece of artwork, go for it!
  2. I've just been going through my photos to reciprocate critiques to

critquers and raters on some of my older photos. (Promise I'm not

mate rating!) I am noticing just how many accounts, still full of

photos, are clearly not in use anymore. I don't think I can do

anything personally about it, but surely this isn't an efficient use

of internet space and there must be something that can be done.

  3. I hadn't noticed the mate rate phenomenon to be quite honest. Personally I wouldn't mind making it impossible to view the rater in all circumstances. Already this is the case for anon. raters, and these are the ones who are likely to be the low raters.

I would miss seeing the identities of commenters, but they don't affect the ratings anyway and don't come into the equation.

  4. I'm sure this must have been discussed at lengths already, though I

couldn't find any mention of it elsewhere. I just wondered why only

anonymous ratings are used to calculate top photo rankings. It goes

without saying that photographs that particularily interest a viewer

will be opened and then explicitly rated, and likely with a higher

rating than a passer by on the Rate Recent Photo feature. I simply

don't understand the logic behind disregarding these more sincere

ratings. Does anyone know? Thanks, Lucy

  5. Hi, thanks for all your ideas. I'm surprised no one else has found a pattern. It just seemed to me, particularily recently, that I could post a photo and not get a single rating, and then repost another time and suddenly have 9 or 10. Just I haven't been keeping track of when I've been posting. But maybe it is simply chance and luck as to what the first few ratings are, due to the Catch 22 problem mentioned.

And yes, I did realise about needing to ask in GMT, which I did, due to people in America, Europe, Asia etc. Perhaps this is also why no time is better.

Anyway, thanks Ben for the copy of your previous post. Long ago I's worked out that commenting constructively on regular commenters is definitely the way forward for gaining viewers.

On a side note, I was interested to see that you, Ben, say 'Post your best pics'. Obviously don't put crap ones up, but I know I've found that I'm most dissappointed when I've put up my most favourite photographs and then not got the comments I expected. I'm not easily put off by such things, but I know a lot of potential submitters who would be. Just not the advice I personally would give- Rather to post something with a new techinique or idea that you are trying out and want to get a reaction too.

    Thanks again, Lucy

  6. I personally just use CD burning services as they fairly widespread. I use two 256mb CF for actual picture taking. I normally don't end up filling both these cards before getting them burnt though, which means there is always quite a bit of redundant space on each CD. But I would prefer that than having a huge card that could swiped by one opps, or get a weird magnetic force around it for a few seconds, or get dunked in salt water for whatever reason. etc etc.

I'm just saying I would prefect to have my photos on several CDs, rather than packed than all on a single electronical device.

That said, I do first make sure the CD has been correctly burnt at a nearby internet cafe, before wiping the cards for good.
