Hello. Ray invited me to this forum, so here I am!

For those who are interested, the pictures from the first group where shot in march 2006 in Tanzania. I was there for fieldwork in my studies and tried to document lifestyle and various issues that can be resumed by the local word 'bongoland', a polysemic(?) word that covers different aspects of the survival strategies: informal, corruption, stinge life ect.. I tried to be as honest as possible and avoid manicheisme(?). We usually only see 2 faces of africa: wildlife/ touristic ethnic groups pics or misery pics.. What I saw in tanzanian slums was rarely miserable.

Barry is right, I used a 350d with mostly a 20mm on it. With crop factor the distortion is acceptable. A good wide angle lens on digital.

Ray said "I am at the moment investigating what digital's capabilities are with black and white. ". I think we can obtain very good b&ws converting digital files, maybe close to analog beauty. The problem I have with my digital work is when it comes to printing it.. Printed, the bw usually has an ugly bluish or greenish tint. This is one of the reasons why I now shoot film.

Second problem is ethical. Shooting digital means having the choice of media. In a photojournalistic posture, it's a problem for me. While some pictures are obviously better in colour, some can only be bw.. when I made the selection, it was very hard to mix bw with colour ones.

Well I think ratings on "old" pics only serve to add to favourites. So its a shame not to be able to do that !

The only point of ratings is to be viewed in TRP. After a few hours, if your pic is stuck under 10 ratings and hasnt been highly rated it simply wont be seen. (btw, my last post is in this situation lol) That's how I sum up the use of ratings.

So I wonder what can be the purpose of people who "lock" the ratings ??
